Our Cadogan Swings series continues with Kim Criswell and Wayne Marshall’s celebration of the American Broadway Songbook on the 14 March and includes Anna-Jane Casey and special guest Joe Stilgoe on 11 April. Mozart’s Requiem Mass in D minor is without doubt the most famous of all unfinished musical works. With the work only partially complete Mozart died of a fever aged just 35. At the request of Mozart’s widow Constanze, it was completed by Franz Xaver Süssmayr, who routinely commissioned works by composers and passed them off as his own! Richard Maunder’s completion of the work will be performed this evening, alongside a Bach cantata and a selection of Bruckner’s motets. TICKETS: £22, £16, £10
Prior to a 13-date tour of the U.S., the Academy returns to Cadogan Hall with acclaimed pianist Jeremy Denk. Jeremy is the winner of a 2013 MacArthur ‘Genius’ Fellowship, the 2014 Avery Fisher Prize and Musical America’s 2014 Instrumentalist of the Year award. Central to this evening’s concert are two Bach concertos, originally composed for harpsichord, performed here on the piano. Book-ending these are two beautiful Serenades for Strings. The first, by Josef Suk, was in fact inspired by Dvorˇák’s, which is a much-loved Academy favourite. The connection is also echoed by suggestions that Suk’s Serenade is a portrait of his wife, who was in fact Dvorˇák’s daughter Otylka.

Schubert Symphony No. 9 (Great) Berlioz Symphonie fantastique Stephen Brearley conductor In its sixth concert in support of Freedom from Torture The Doctors’ Orchestra presents two monumental symphonies written only four years apart by composers aged just 29 and 27, yet as different in style and technique as they could possibly be. Schubert’s Symphony No. 9 overtly pays tribute to Beethoven, whom he revered, while lacking nothing of its composer’s gift for melody. Berlioz, though no less in awe of Beethoven, produced in his Symphonie fantastique a mould-breaking work whose brilliant orchestration and stunning effects profoundly influenced generations of composers who followed him.

A familiar face on the podium with many of the world’s greatest orchestras, Vladimir Ashkenazy personally champions the electrifying young musicians of Southbank Sinfonia, a ‘dashing ensemble who play with exhilarating fizz, exactness and stamina’ (The Times). Dvorˇák’s Ninth Symphony is a masterpiece born from the thriving metropolis of late 19th century New York, blending a love for his native bohemia with the exhilarating thrill of the New World. Featuring acclaimed pianist Alessio Bax, Rachmaninov’s iconic Rhapsody transforms, embellishes and amplifies a melody by Paganini into one of the all-time great works for piano and orchestra.

Legendary Sheffield-born singer, songwriter and former frontman of Ace, Squeeze and Mike & The Mechanics returns to the road following his widely acclaimed recent album release Rain or Shine, a mix of new original songs and classic tracks. With a back catalogue of hits to his name including How Long, Tempted and The Living Years, Paul’s marvellously soulful voice is known to millions around the world. His songs have been performed by some of the biggest names in music including The Eagles, Diana Ross and Tom Jones and he is constantly in demand as a session keyboardist, having recorded and toured with Elton John, Eric Clapton and BB King.
Janina Fialkowska piano Michał Nesterowicz conductor Mendelssohn became enchanted by the Scottish landscapes after he toured there in 1829; his stirring evocations of the natural world are not only evident in his Scottish Symphony but also the Hebrides Overture, which vividly depicts both stormy tides and still coastal waters. Dvorˇák found inspiration for his Symphony No. 8 closer to his home in the folk music of native Bohemia; it is one of his most exuberant works, conducted tonight by Polish conductor Michał Nesterowicz. Esteemed virtuoso Janina Fialkowska also performs Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24, written at the summit of Mozart’s creativity, the work’s unique quality is fashioned through the darkness of the minor key. Our resident orchestra begins with Beethoven’s turbulent Symphony No. 2 and then vivacious Symphony No. 4, so enamoured by the latter symphony, Mendelssohn chose it to be performed at his first concert at Gewandhaus in Leipzig. Brilliant pianist Freddy Kempf joins the RPO with a performance of Beethoven’s glittering Piano Concerto No. 1. The piece, which was written during 1796 and 1797, showcases the piano in all its glory; piano and orchestra alternate throughout the composition, as was appropriate for the early period.

Six groups of varying ages between 10 and 19 meet every Easter at Queenswood School for eight days of rehearsing, balanced by a fun recreational programme. Karl Jenkins The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace Laura Oldfield conductor Eltham College returns to Cadogan Hall to perform Karl Jenkins’ inspirational and uplifting work. This concert will include images that reflect the powerful message of this thrilling piece. The College Choir and Choral Society will also be performing Five Negro Spirituals from A Child of our Time by Tippett. Stick Attack, the school’s principal percussion ensemble, will present Sextet for Percussion by leading contemporary percussionist and composer, Stephen McNeff, as part of this celebration of twentieth century music.
Half a century earlier, Dvorˇák left Prague for a new life in New York, and while there poured his longing for his Czech homeland into his Cello Concerto, which Michael Petrov performs in the second half.
Eltham College Choral Society was founded over a decade ago and comprises pupils from as young as nine, up to septuagenarians performing with an orchestra combining Eltham College pupils and music teachers. Over 200 performers will take part in this very special performance of dramatic music.

Tonight they are led by Music and Artistic Director Jacek Kaspszyk to perform two major choral works, including a rare performance at Cadogan Hall of Beethoven’s monumental Ninth Symphony.
Javier Perianes piano Eduardo Portal conductor Rimsky-Korsakov’s dazzling Scheherazade forms one of the highlights of this concert. Themes of orientalism and the exotic, the orchestration and enchanting orchestral solos culminate in a vivid tone poem, inspired by the folk tales of One Thousand and One Nights. In contrast, the vision for Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G struck the composer ‘on a train between Oxford and London’, according to Ravel himself; the Concerto exhibits the vogue jazz idioms of Paris and the United States, where Ravel undertook a concert tour in 1928. Ravel’s compatriot Franz Liszt wrote 13 symphonic poems, of which Les préludes (No. 3) is one of his most popular – the striking dynamic ranges and kaleidoscope of orchestral textures create a dramatic symphonic work.

Located two minutes walk from Sloane Square Tube, served by District and Circle lines, just one stop from Victoria station which has both mainline and additional Tube connections. Wheelchair users If you use a wheelchair and wish to transfer to a seat, we regret we may not be able to provide a member of staff to help you physically. However, we will arrange for your wheelchair to be taken away and stored. A lift is located to the right once inside the Box Office reception allowing access to a lowered Box Office counter. Foyer areas are on the same level as the Box Office and the foyer bar (Oakley Room) is accessed via a wide access lift. Seats within the stalls are accessed via a wide lift as are adapted toilet facilities. The Gallery Please note the lift provides access to all levels except the gallery seating areas. Gallery seating can only be accessed via the main stairwell. When travelling to and from the gallery seating areas please allow sufficient time in order to be seated at an appropriate time. Customers with hearing requirements The auditorium is fitted with an infra-red amplification system. This is not the same as a Loop System so switching your hearing aid to ‘T’ is not sufficient. Please contact a member of staff on arrival to be given an amplification aid. Customers with sight impairment Guide dogs are welcome to access the hall and auditorium but please do let us know prior to arriving at the hall so we may make any special arrangements if necessary.
