Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 3 Rachmaninov Symphony No. 2 Ronan Magill piano Stephen Brearley conductor The Doctors’ Orchestra, playing once again in support of Freedom from Torture, presents two of Rachmaninov’s monumental but much loved works. Held by some to be the most technically demanding of all piano concertos, Rachmaninov’s Third deploys bravura pianism not for its own sake but as a means of creating a work which is by turns thrilling, wistful and tender. Ronan Magill, tonight’s soloist, made his United States debut with it and his Rachmaninov has been praised for its ‘marvellous deep melodic line’. Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony, unlike his First, was a triumph at its first performance and has remained a favourite with orchestras and audiences ever since.

Mozart La clemenza di Tito

Part of Choral at Cadogan 2013-14

John Rutter director

Classical Opera presents its first performance of Mozart’s magnificent late opera, allegedly written within 18 days during the composer’s final months. For a long time dismissed as the black sheep among Mozart’s mature operas, La clemenza di Tito is only now becoming recognised as a masterpiece, and with its combination of nobility and passion, virtuosity and economy of gesture, it can be seen to represent the apotheosis of the 18th-century opera seria.

TICKETS: £35, £28, £22, £15

In tonight’s rare live appearance the choir presents a programme of choral music old and new, sacred and secular including John Rutter favourites. Formed in 1981 by their director John Rutter, the Cambridge Singers were brought together for the express purpose of making recordings. The nucleus of the group was originally provided by former members of the chapel choir of Clare College, Cambridge (where John Rutter was Director of Music from 1975-79), supplemented by former members of other collegiate choirs. Today the choir is one of a number of freelance professional choirs on the London circuit, but unique in that its primary activity is still recording. Former members of the choir include such luminaries as Mark Padmore and Gerald Finley.

Elgar Serenade for Strings Brahms A German Requiem (sung in German) Thames Philharmonic Choir Thames Festival Orchestra Katherine Crompton soprano Edward Grint baritone John Bate conductor Adrian Levine leader Elgar’s popular Serenade for Strings is an attractive early work which already demonstrates his expressive lyricism and technical skill. Brahms, though deeply affected by the deaths of his mentor Robert Schumann and later of his own mother, intended his Requiem not as a personal memorial but as a work of healing for all mankind. Undoubtedly his choral masterpiece, it is not a traditional requiem, but a series of settings of German Bible passages.

Written for Bach’s first Good Friday in Leipzig in April 1724, the St John is the shorter and more intimate of his two surviving Passion settings. By this time, such works had become much more than a simple narrative, but highly dramatic though Bach’s music is (as at the points when the choir takes the roles of Chief Priests, soldiers and crowd), re-telling the Gospel story remains central, interspersed with reflections on its meaning in solo arias, choruses and the well-known chorales, so that it speaks to listeners in the concert hall today as directly as to Bach’s in church.

Premier rock ‘n’ roll legend Joe Brown goes from strength to strength as his contemporary achievements continue to gather momentum. His Very Best Of album achieved a Gold Record for a massive 120,000 sales and was on the UK charts for eight weeks, staying four weeks in the Top 20. September the same year his 50th anniversary was celebrated with a wonderful sell-out show at the Royal Albert Hall. His new CD, The Ukulele Album, caused a similar stir and due to its success a deluxe version was released in October 2013. Joe has continued to break box office records and recently received MOJO magazine’s coveted Outstanding Contribution To Music Award as well as a much deserved MBE.

Eltham College Choral Society Alison Hill & Katy Hill soprano David Allsopp alto Benedict Hymas tenor James Oldfield bass Laura Oldfield conductor Eltham College celebrates one of the greatest composers of all time, performing Bach’s glorious masterwork the Mass in B minor. This extraordinary setting of the Catholic mass by a devout Lutheran remains one of the most profound and enigmatic works in the Western canon. Eltham College Choir and Choral Society, Eltham College Bach Ensemble, (a large period instrument orchestra) and outstanding vocal soloists will combine forces to delight audiences with their thrilling rendition.

The renowned tenor sings a selection of rarely heard concert arias by Mozart, accompanied by the self-led Kammerorchester Basel. In today’s concert halls, we are used to hearing symphonies played in their entirety, but in Mozart’s era symphonic movements were often heard interspersed with other pieces. Mozart’s Prague Symphony is performed in this manner during the second half of the programme.

Mendelssohn A Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture Sibelius Violin Concerto Brahms Symphony No. 4

Part of Zurich International Orchestra Series 2013-14

Ju-Young Baek violin Grzegorz Nowak conductor Brimming with lyrical, colourful music, this concert begins with Mendelssohn’s evocative overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream. While classical in form, the romantic atmosphere is unmistakable upon hearing the rich yet mysterious opening chords of the piece. The Violin Concerto by Sibelius is an outstanding contribution to the repertoire, with its combination of thrilling technique and soaring passion. The majestic Symphony No. 4 by Brahms was influenced by two of the composer’s heroes: Bach and Beethoven. The work opens in a dramatic vein and ends with one of Brahms’ greatest achievements: a grand ‘chaconne’ on a theme by Bach.

Tchaikovsky Francesca da Rimini Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 1 Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 4 Yuri Simonov conductor Julian Lloyd Webber cello The Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra was established after the Second World War by the Russian government and continues to amaze audiences with its performances with highly acclaimed conductors and soloists. This evening they are joined by world-famous cellist Julian Lloyd Webber, performing Shostakovich’s demanding First Cello Concerto – a highly virtuosic piece with an astonishing cello cadenza that stands as a movement in itself. The huge sound of a Russian orchestra playing Russian works that are in its blood promises an exhilarating evening.
