Beihdja Rahal and her Ensemble Arab-Andalusian music of Algiers

JUNE

Little known in the western classical music repertoire, Algiers-Andalusian music has recently been introduced to concert halls in France and by the Latin American and Caribbean Cultural Society in England (LACCS-UK). Tonight LACCS-UK and Beihdja Rahal bring to London for the first time this unique repertoire of classical Arab-Andalusian songs, part of Algeria’s cultural heritage. Beihdja Rahal possesses the artistic skills to perform and sing this complex music, balancing her voice and instrumental playing perfectly with the string ensemble. Beihdja Rahal was born in Algiers to a family of musicians who performed Arab-Andalusian music, learning from their experience and knowledge of this complex art of singing and playing instruments. Tonight’s concert is a classical musical representation of the Maghreb’s musical traditions, dating back to the Medieval Arab Kingdom of the Spanish Peninsula, including some of the best Arab-Andalusian pieces of Algiers’ medieval and 18th-century music traditions. Tickets: £16 With thanks to LACCS-UK and the Embassy of Algeria

Chelsea Opera Group and Orchestra Rossini: Le comte Ory Toby Purser conductor Mark Milhofer tenor Claire Booth soprano Anne-Marie Owens mezzo-soprano Benedict Nelson baritone ‘There is not a bad melody, there is not an ugly bar in Le comte Ory,’ wrote the 19thcentury English operatic chronicler Henry Chorley. Franz Liszt went further, dubbing it ‘the champagne opera’. The legend of Count Ory relates how Ory and his philandering men lay siege to a village whose menfolk are all away on crusade, and then to a convent. So risqué a story fell foul of self-appointed moralists. Since there is no wittier or more finely honed opera in the entire Rossini canon than Le comte Ory, the loss was all theirs. JULY

Ivor Setterfield conductor Trafalgar Sinfonia Tereza Gevorgyan soprano Katie Coventry mezzo-soprano Samuel Sakker tenor Benedict Nelson baritone Mozart’s great choral work was composed in the last year of his life and completed after his death by his pupil Süssmayr. For those who already love this work, and for those encountering it for the first time, this is sure to be an uplifting experience. John Rutter composed his moving, engaging and tuneful Requiem soon after the death of his father. He combines parts of the Latin Requiem Mass with additional psalms and texts in English. Anyone who knows only the composer’s Christmas music may well be surprised by the anguished opening. Yet the overall mood is consolatory, especially in the concluding settings of The Lord is my Shepherd and Lux aeterna; and the different soundworlds contrast with and complement the classical austerity of the Mozart from two centuries earlier. ALE X ANDRE THAR AUD

French pianist and Satie champion Alexandre Tharaud leads a cabaret of music and words celebrating one of the most curious and innovative composers of the 20th century. He is joined by actor and impressionist Alistair McGowan (author of both a radio play and a documentary inspired by the composer) for a lunchtime foray featuring extracts from Satie’s witty Memoirs of an Amnesiac. Along the way we discover more about the composer of the solo-piano Gnossiennes and Gymnopédies: a committed eccentric who embraced Surrealism, invented the term ‘furniture music’ (later to become ‘ambient music’), frequented Montmartre’s bohemian Le Chat Noir cabaret club, became seduced by an esoteric strain of mystical Catholicism and for a period ate only food that was white in colour. Eloquent French-Canadian pianist Louis Lortie performs an intriguing programme that moves from the clear spring-water of Fauré’s Barcarolles to depictions of Italian cities from Poulenc and Liszt. Poulenc’s pianistic vision of Naples manages to be light-hearted and dazzling at the same time. Liszt was intrigued and inspired by the city’s furious traditional dance, the tarantella. He used that and the gondola songs of Venice in the broad emotional canvas that is his Venezia e Napoli. RADIO Live on BBC Radio 3 ONLINE Listen and catch up at bbc.co.uk/proms

BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists the Armida Quartet bring two friends and three composers to Cadogan Hall for the summer’s seventh Proms Chamber Music concert. Either side of a new work for viola and piano written for Lise Berthaud and David Saudubray by Sally Beamish are chamber works by Schubert and Mozart: the former’s quartet movement combining sobriety and vivacity, and the latter’s C major String Quintet – a work brimming with twists, interruptions and thrills. Songs by Purcell (arr. Britten), Mendelssohn and Quilter, including settings of Shakespeare Carolyn Sampson soprano Iestyn Davies counter-tenor Joseph Middleton piano There will be no interval Two cherished British singers round off 2016’s Proms Chamber Music series with a joint recital at Cadogan Hall, celebrating English song with an extended stopover in Germany for songs and duets by Felix Mendelssohn. Either side, Carolyn Sampson, Iestyn Davies and Joseph Middleton present Benjamin Britten’s touching ‘realisations’ of songs by the composer’s theatrical predecessor Henry Purcell, and works by the doyen of English song, Roger Quilter.
