Prolific songwriter Albert Hammond performs a rare UK symphonic concert, joined on stage by Germany’s Leipzig Orchestra, led by conductor Andris Nelsons.

Known for writing timeless classics performed by the likes of Diana Ross, Whitney Houston, Leo Sayer, The Hollies and Starship, Albert will be presenting songs from his new record In Symphony, a celebration of his career spanning 50+ years. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, the songs on the album are reimagined versions of hits Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now, One Moment In Time, When I Need You and many others, orchestrated and arranged by Grammynominated composer Rob Mathes (Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Jay Z). With 30 chart-topping hits and combined sales of 360 million, on this album Albert is giving a unique treatment to many of his own singles and ‘taking back’ tracks that have been worldwide hits for others.

Peter Phillips director This programme of Italian masterpieces is centred round the unaccompanied (or prima prattica) writing of Monteverdi, the anniversary of whose birth in 1567 is being celebrated. This a cappella style reached its zenith in the music of Palestrina and then acquired a more harmonic and even madrigalian focus, as shown in the Monteverdi works, a process which could go no further once in the hands of Gesualdo. Add to this Allegri’s Miserere – arguably the most famous piece of choral music in the world – and this promises to be an evening to savour.
