Lamentation

© Eric Richmond

Choral at Cadogan 2010-11

The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain is a group of all-singing, all-strumming Ukulele players, using instruments bought with loose change, which believes that all genres of music are available for reinterpretation, as long as they are played on the ukulele. A concert by the Ukulele Orchestra is a funny, virtuosic, twanging, awesome, foot-stomping obituary of rock-n-roll and melodious light entertainment featuring only the ‘bonsai guitar’ and a menagerie of voices in a collision of post-punk performance and toe-tapping oldies. There are no drums, pianos, backing tracks or banjos, no pitch shifters or electronic trickery. Only an astonishing revelation of the rich palette of orchestration afforded by ukuleles and singing (and a bit of whistling). Audiences have a good time with the Ukulele Orchestra.

Shelby, who has also appeared as Johnny Cash’s mother in the film Walk the Line, has had her music featured on blockbuster films such as Bridget Jones’s Diary. Not one to be missed!

A European favourite, he returns to London for the last of four exclusive shows. A sell-out hit in concert halls throughout Europe, Liberg combines humour and extreme musical virtuosity to poke fun at the world of classical music. An eccentric joker, the lovechild of Victor Borge and Woody Allen, or simply a vastly talented Dutchman; all these qualities have been used to describe Emmy Award winning comedian Hans Liberg. “From Gerard Hoffnung to Bill Bailey’s ‘Remarkable Guide to the Orchestra’, Liberg is one of very few classical comedians... besides the gags, he is an astonishing pianist... Will he be remembered as a Borge-alike? I hope his legacy goes farther.” The Times

The glittering Overture to his operetta Candide is among Bernstein’s most accomplished achievements, bursting with a contagious joie de vivre. William Walton admired Gershwin’s superb Piano Concerto in F, a marriage of jazz and classical techniques carried off with panache. From urbane America we travel to Copland’s Wild West – Billy the Kid bristles with American folk and cowboy tunes, then off with Gershwin to Paris, with his witty depiction of an American traveller absorbing the sights and sounds of that buzzing, bustling metropolis.

An Evening with David Sedaris

Volunteers required!

With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America’s pre-eminent humour writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that Sedaris is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today. “Sedaris has hit upon the narrative equivalent of Pepsi, or the PlayStation, or oxygen, or the haircut: something that others in the world might actually want and find useful... He’s smart, he’s caustic, he’s mordant, and, somehow, he’s... well, nice.” Bill Richardson, Toronto Globe and Mail

If you are enthusiastic about music and Cadogan Hall, why not be a part of it? We welcome interest from people of all ages and from every part of the community – if you enjoy meeting people and can spare a few hours each week, we would love to hear from you. “I’ve found working as a volunteer really rewarding; I’ve met lots of other music lovers and been part of a great team in an excellent atmosphere.” Peter, Cadogan Hall volunteer To find out more about our new volunteer scheme please contact Walter Morrison 020 7824 7602 walter.morrison@cadoganhall.com

Laura Trayhurn Alto Simon Wall Tenor

The exciting Russian cellist Boris Andrianov will be giving a rare London recital together with legendary pianist Eleonora Bekova pairing two highlights of romantic music by Rachmaninov and Schumann with two of the pinnacles of 20th century cello composition by Schnittke and Shostakovich. Rachmaninov’s Romances are better known as songs for voice but take on a sublime beauty when performed by cello whilst the Fantasy Pieces are amongst the most loved of all Schumann’s writing. By way of contrast, the Schnittke and Shostakovich place exceptional demands on the performers with movements of haunting soundscapes and profound poignancy.

Michael Davis Bass Goldsmiths Choral Union Sacconi String Quartet Musicians of London Brian Wright Conductor

A trio of finely crafted British 20th century choral rarities. Britten’s Cantata misericordium movingly tells the parable of the Good Samaritan. Bliss’s Pastoral sets poems on classical rustic themes by Ben Jonson and others. Finally, there’s Vaughan Williams’s last choral work, Epithalamion, which was premièred by GCU in 1957.

Mozart’s Great Mass, brought to you by London’s largest classical choir. A monumental work of musical genius and probably written in thanksgiving for the recovery of his wife from illness, the C Minor Mass shows Mozart’s genius as much as the better-known Requiem. Together with the magnificent choral drama of Haydn’s Te Deum, this is an evening not to be missed.

Teamed with the Royal College of Art, the ACO immerses you in the passionate and uplifting world of Schoenberg’s tonal masterpiece, Verklärte Nacht. See Cadogan Hall transformed by specially commissioned art installations as you delight in the strains of Schoenberg’s original sextet; absorb a dramatic reading of the poem that inspired the piece; then bathe in the ravishing string sound of the orchestral scoring, directed by leader of the English Chamber Orchestra, Stephanie Gonley.

Fabien Gabel Conductor Natalie Clein Cello (pictured)

After one of Mozart’s most flamboyant Overtures, we are treated to the more rarely heard Cello Concerto No. 1 of Saint-Saëns, a tour de force of dramatic flourishes and exquisite melodies. An ideal companion piece to Saint-Saëns’ work, Fauré’s brooding Élégie is a mournful cello soliloquy supported by an orchestral cushion of sound. The famous second movement of Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony grows from its whispering opening to a dramatic conclusion, and the work ends with an irrepressibly boisterous finale.

Time, and its passage, is the theme of this century-spanning multimedia programme from an ensemble bringing together some of the most promising musicians in London. Time is a tangible material to be explored in young artist Robert Hawkins’s new visual counterpart to Adès’s cerebral orchestral work. Our relationship with our own past – personal, collective and imagined – resounds through Vaughan Williams’s post-war reminiscences, while cultural history and accumulation of meaning over time has made Rachmaninov’s piano concerto into a powerful work of art. Grammy Award winning artist, Delbert McClinton, proudly defies classifications. His music blends his Texas roots with roadhouse rock, juke-joint blues, Memphis soul and country. During Delbert’s four decades plus in the music business, record labels have consistently tried to pigeonhole Delbert’s music. But if you ask the critics about Delbert’s dynamic vocals and harmonica style, you’ll hear descriptions ranging from ‘honky-tonk,’ ‘blue-eyed soul,’ and ‘Texas stomp’ to ‘country rock’ and ‘blues.’ Delbert’s music rebels against traditional categorisation. Ask Delbert what kind of music he plays and he’ll say, “Fun music.” This is Delbert McClinton’s only UK show and will feature his full band plus special guests.

Junior Trinity is a Saturday school offering individual lessons, creative musicianship classes, ensembles, choirs and orchestras to talented students aged 9-19 as well as our String Time programme for younger students aged 3-11. It is a Centre for Advanced Training as part of the DfE Music and Dance Scheme. This concert features performances by Junior Trinity’s Equal Voice Choir, Four Part Choir, Intermediate Strings, Big Band, Wind and Symphony Orchestras as well as our End of Year Prize-giving.

Many 19th-century musicians either supported Wagner’s innovations, or favoured the more traditional Brahms, but tonight we can simply bask in the brilliance of both. The Prelude to Act 1 of Lohengrin is an exquisite example of Wagner’s shimmering, spine-tingling orchestration and slowly unfolding harmonies, reaching heights of sublime beauty. Brahms’s Violin Concerto is another treat, with a particularly delectable slow movement. Belgian composer Franck combined French ‘cyclic’ form, in which certain phrases recur throughout, with a more Germanic style – like Wagner, Franck revelled in lush orchestral sounds.

Flute Sonata Emmanuel Pahud flute Eric Le Sage piano Emmanuel Pahud returns to the Proms with his regular accompanist for a recital of pieces composed in the 1940s. Martin≤’s amiable work plumbs unexpected depths in its central core, while the Prokofiev Sonata’s delightfully sunny nature makes it an ideal vehicle for the brilliant sparkle of the flute. In between comes the Sonatine by Dutilleux, here at his most pastoral and Debussyan, carrying the flag for the Paris Conservatoire tradition of commissioning new scores for its final examinations.

The Aronowitz Ensemble, former BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists, explore Britten’s musical relationship with his teacher, Frank Bridge. The Piano Variations, composed while Britten was still a student, looks forward to his celebrated Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge, that masterpiece for string orchestra to be performed on Sunday 21 August at the Royal Albert Hall. Today’s concert begins with a striking composition from the young Britten in which the oboist is Nicholas Daniel, past winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition. Bridge’s Piano Quintet comes from relatively early in his own career, before the events of the First World War cast a dark shadow on his creative outlook.

In their second Proms Saturday Matinee appearance, the London Sinfonietta is joined by its founding conductor David Atherton. Greek-born, Paris-based Georges Aperghis is intimately involved with French musical theatre but his new piece takes its title from cinematic techniques of cutting and continuity. Sir Harrison Birtwistle reflects on more ancient traditions in Angel Fighter, a pocket oratorio for voices and ensemble in the tradition of his previous examinations of pivotal myths that resonate down the ages. Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’s Il rozzo martello, a contemplation on a sonnet by Michelangelo, was composed for the BBC Singers in 1997.

Yo-Yo Ma is not only one of the great cellists of our time but has also become one of the most important figures on the American cultural scene. In the first of two appearances as part of the 2011 Proms season, he resumes his recital partnership with Kathryn Stott to perform Graham Fitkin’s L, composed in 2005 for Yo-Yo Ma’s 50th birthday. Rachmaninov’s Cello Sonata is a lyrically expressive work which is nevertheless one of the repertoire’s great challenges, for cellist and pianist alike.

Out of This World BBC commission: world premiere BBC Singers Sinfonye Robert Hollingworth conductor Stevie Wishart conductor A concert performed jointly by the BBC Singers and Stevie Wishart’s Sinfonye, a group which applies new learning on period performance to the improvisatory freedom associated with traditional music. This concert explores material sung, inspired or composed by women and pays tribute to the music of Hildegard of Bingen ending with four new songs based on her texts. ‘For Hildegard, it seems music was a way for mortals to experience something of heavenly or spiritual ecstasy,’ says Stevie Wishart, ‘and it is perhaps this desire which we can most clearly empathise with today.’ As a centrepiece, two British settings of medieval texts express visionary fervour through the sound-worlds of the second half of the 20th century.

An artist with a winning combination of consummate technical brilliance, fine musicianship, and personal verve, pianist Xiayin Wang wins the hearts of audiences wherever she appears. As recitalist, chamber musician and orchestral soloist in such venues as New York’s Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, she has already achieved a high level of recognition for her commanding performances.

A costumed, staged performance with 30 piece orchestra of that “shabby little shocker”. Mairead Buicke (Musetta at ENO) is the diva Floria Tosca and her painter lover Cavaradossi is Mexican tenor Jesus Leon who has spent the last year studying in Modena at the personal invitation of Mirella Freni. Scarpia is South African Njabulo Madlala winner of the 2010 Kathleen Ferrier Competition. Sung in Italian with surtitles. A miniature version of the 2010 production at Grange Park.

History of Cadogan Hall

First opened in 1907 as a New Christian Science Church designed by Robert Fellowes Chisholm, the hall hosted congregations of 1600 in its heyday, however, like most other churches there was a decline in attendances. In the 1980s there was a congregation of barely 150. By 1996 the congregation was no longer able to cope and sold the building, which then fell into disuse. Cadogan Estate purchased the hall in 2000 to safeguard its future. Through their connection with Opera Holland Park, Cadogan discovered that the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was looking for a permanent base in London. Cadogan Hall was an excellent opportunity for the orchestra to benefit from Cadogan’s aim to bring the former church back into useful life in a manner befitting its character and civic presence. On one level the conversion of this large relatively modern listed building into a performance space seems straightforward. After all, there was a ready-made auditorium with a raked floor, a stage, a proscenium and a gallery. Unfortunately modern expectations of comfort and facilities let alone the requirements of building and licensing regulations meant extensive and fundamental changes had to be made.

The acoustics of the building were a big issue both in terms of environmental acoustics – the control of sound break-out from the building – and performance acoustics within the auditorium. The ceiling and the roof had to be re-detailed to provide acoustic insulation. Tuned resonator tubes were installed on the main ceiling and the walls under the gallery and the undersides of the tip-up seats in the stalls also have a pattern of absorption holes to retain the hall’s acoustic character. The new performance lighting and sound systems in the auditorium include the computer controlled theatrical lights on the ceiling. These provide lighting for rehearsals but really come into their own when they are programmed to rotate, change light beam colours and patterns and provide other special effects for performances. A large screen for films and visual presentations can be lowered and allows performances elsewhere to be relayed live by satellite or the internet. The organ installed in 1911 was carefully dismantled and put into store to await re-installation in its new home in a church in the Midlands. The organ casing, an integral part of the character of the Auditorium along with timber panelling and balustrading from the platform, was also put into store. When the organ screen was re-assembled and nearly a century of dirt was removed it was found that each of the column capitals and each of the carvings around the arching balustrade are unique – a surprise discovery that added to the richness of the building.

Despite the scale of the auditorium the combined effects of the stage, the steeply raked stalls and the low gallery create a surprisingly intimate venue where the audience experiences a very real feeling of being part of the performance. The stained glass was designed by a Danish nobleman. Baron Arild Rosenkrantz, had learnt the art of stained glass whilst working with Tiffany in New York. The designs for Cadogan Hall were said to exhibit “artistic simplicity of patterning and to provide efficiency of lighting and economy consistent with dignity”. There are no allegorical images and only one window has text. All the windows were removed and taken by a specialist to workshops for painstaking restoration. Although the Celtic knot motifs are simple and the use of colour restrained, the dramatic effect of the restored glass was another pleasant surprise during the refurbishment process.
