Sir John Tavener’s Popule meus meditates upon the rejection of God by modern man, with the solo cello steadfast against the temptations of the secular world as hurled out by the timpani.

Mozart Violin Sonata in A major, K.526 Bartok Violin Sonata No. 1 Christian Tetzlaff violin Lars Vogt piano Christian Tetzlaff is joined by his regular duo partner Lars Vogt for a recital that travels from Mozart’s last major work for violin and piano, completed just before the premiere of Don Giovanni, to Bartók’s First Violin Sonata, composed in 1921. The Hungarian composer, a Tetzlaff favourite, here stretches tonality in a sonata which provides a visceral, richly rewarding listening experience while pushing its players’ techniques to their limits.

In her 80th-birthday year, Sofia Gubaidulina is represented by the atmospheric The Canticle of the Sun, a setting of St Francis of Assisi in which the silences can seem as important as the notes. Tickets £12, £10, £5

Bob Geldof in Concert

An intelligence² Debate

Haydn Sonata No. 52 in E Flat Major Earl Wild Sonata (2002) Liszt Mephisto Waltz No. 1 Rachmaninov Six Moments Musicaux Ravel La Valse

Bob Geldof has just released his new studio album How To Compose Popular Songs That Will Sell and will be performing tracks from the album and hits of The Boomtown Rats.

An artist with a winning combination of superb musicianship, personal verve and riveting technical brilliance, Xiayin Wang conquers the hearts of audiences wherever she appears. As recitalist, chamber musician, and orchestral soloist in such venues as New York’s Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, she has already achieved a high level of recognition for her commanding performances.

In 1978, The Boomtown Rats had their first No. 1 single in the UK with Rat Trap, which was the first new wave chart-topper in Britain. In 1979, the group gained international renown with their second UK No. 1, I Don’t Like Mondays. This was equally successful, as well as controversial; Geldof wrote it in the aftermath of Brenda Ann Spencer’s attempted massacre at an elementary school across the street from her house in San Diego, California, at the beginning of 1979. Other hits Include Like Clockwork, Someone’s Looking At You and Banana Republic.

Have the West’s efforts to eradicate Al-Qaeda around the world simply been fanning the flames of hatred and violence? Could we not have saved money and lives simply by deploying counter-terrorist tactics? Or was 9/11 itself a declaration of war that required aggressive counteraction? Left alone in their hiding places in Afghanistan and Pakistan wouldn’t the militants have succeeded in destroying even more innocent lives? Won’t history ultimately look kindly on the US’ hard line against terrorism?

With his band

Former President of Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf, and Colleen Graffy will propose this provocative and timely motion.

Please note this performance may contain adult content and strong language. Presented by Tony Denton Promotions.

Gershwin was a true original, with this programme featuring his masterpieces for piano and orchestra, Rhapsody in Blue, as well as his witty, evocative portrait of An American in Paris. Gershwin’s last concert piece, the fascinating Variations on ‘I Got Rhythm’ of 1934, was dedicated to his brother and lyricist, Ira. The Gershwins’ song is showcased in an array of styles, including Oriental and even atonal. The jaunty Three Preludes are bursting with the vitality of jazz and blues, while the Lullaby is one of Gershwin’s gentlest works, full of graceful charm.

Freddy Kempf piano/director Freddy Kempf embarks on an epic exploration of Beethoven’s Piano Concertos. Directing from the piano, Kempf begins his odyssey with the noble Concerto No. 1, with its exquisite slow movement and vivacious rondo finale, first performed by Beethoven himself in 1798 in Prague. The dramatic Piano Concerto No. 2 was written about a decade before No.1, but was published later; the work was used by Beethoven to display his own impressive pianistic technique. Charles Rosen is a rare phenomenon – a distinguished scholar, educator, writer and musical philosopher who is equally renowned for his piano performances. ‘From the opening... Rosen cast a spell of mystery and tension, of a vision understood. This set the pattern for the evening... A historic occasion.’ (The Independent) Charles Rosen Lecture: Monday 10 October, 1pm Free to ticket holders and Encore members.

Beethoven’s ‘Eroica’ symphony defined an age: its compositional ingenuity and unprecedented scale broke the shackles of musical tradition, and its dedication to Napoleon Bonaparte linked it to the greatest man of the day. Sibelius En Saga Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1 Brahms Symphony No. 4 Thomas Dausgaard conductor Tasmin Little violin This programme boasts three works of great beauty, starting with Sibelius’ magnificent En Saga, a fairy tale that leaves the listener to invent his own story. Bruch’s Violin Concerto has become one of the most celebrated pieces in the genre, brimming with adventurous spirit and ravishing melodies – especially in the famous slow movement. The glorious Fourth and final Symphony by Brahms was heavily influenced by Beethoven, with a dramatic opening movement, wistful Andante, and a grand third movement resplendent with the glittering sound of triangles. All this is crowned by one of Brahms’ greatest achievements: a ‘chaconne’ finale of monumental scale and majesty, using a theme by Bach.

An Evening with Roger McGuinn

They Call Her Natasha (But She Looks Like Elsie) The Songs of Elvis Costello

Zurich International Concert Series Concert 1 of 8 Prokofiev Romeo & Juliet (short suite) Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto Mussorgsky Arr. Ravel Pictures at an Exhibition Yuri Simonov conductor Nikita Boriso-Glebsky violin

Legendary former Byrds frontman and founding member, Roger McGuinn returns for a hotly anticipated solo UK tour. The Byrds’ era-defining songs like Eight Miles High, Mr Tambourine Man, Turn, Turn, Turn and All I Really Wanna Do became classics of the new folk rock sound. McGuinn’s trademark Rickenbacker 12 string sound has influenced generations of musicians and this superb show will draw from his huge back catalogue, including his Grammy-nominated project, Treasures From The Folk Den, his critically acclaimed 4 CD Box Set, The Folk Den Project and last year’s 22 Timeless Tracks From The Folk Den Project.

Formed from Moscow’s finest orchestral musicians, the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the great Russian orchestras of today. Regular visitors to the world’s leading concert venues, the orchestra presents a richly colourful programme under the baton of its chief conductor, Yuri Simonov.

From the opening bars of a lilting Accidents Will Happen to the joyous finale of a rocking Pump It Up, this is something very different. This is a musical play about a female whose life mirrors (increasingly deliberately) that of her idol, Elvis (Costello). One wonders whether Elsie Costello is a childlike fan or someone with an obsession. Does she really exist at all, other than as a device to tell the tale of something akin to Mr McManus’ life in words and music. Whichever, it’s a clever way to play Costello songs for the evening, but take them one stage further. This tale of Elsie Costello plays out to a soundtrack of Costello’s classic songs including Accidents Will Happen, Shipbuilding, Alison, I Want You and many more. Elsie is breathtakingly performed by Lou Dalgleish, accompanied by co-writer Michael Weston King’s guitar and vocals, and the phenomenal piano skills of Gladstone Wilson.

The ECO is delighted to welcome him to the opening concert of its 2011 – 12 Concert Series to perform Prokofiev's exhilarating 2nd Violin concerto. The ECO is delighted to welcome the well-known Italian conductor Gianluca Marciano who will conduct Rossini's ebullient Barber of Seville Overture and one of Mozart’s most delightful symphonies, No.39 in E flat. Together they frame the scope of the Christian experience – from the joyous anticipation of Christ’s birth to the calm acceptance of death and resurrection. Taking these three texts as touchstones, this programme explores the musical responses of composers divided by age and nationality, but united by a common spiritual inspiration.

The Swingle Singers are an international a cappella phenomenon. This eight-voice a cappella group has performed on every continent and on the world’s most famous stages, as well as releasing over 50 recordings and winning 5 Grammy Awards. They have been pushing the boundaries of what it is possible to achieve with the human voice for the past 50 years – and the current line up is no different.

Considered by many to be Gounod’s musical masterpiece, this is a score of passionate, breathtaking originality, evoking Provence in the height of summer. Thwarted lovers Mireille and Vincent are separated by their social standing. Joyful Provençal peasant celebrations contrast with a world where superstitions and fear can lead to destruction. Defying her cruel father, Mireille sets out to find her lover against all the odds. Tickets £40, £32, £25, £20, £16

An Intelligence² Debate It’s a fact that Britain abandoned its Empire in a hurry. Administrators created new countries by drawing lines on the map and ignoring affiliations of religion, tribe and language. So it isn’t surprising that our former colonies blame us for the tensions that continue to this day in Kashmir and parts of Africa. But isn’t it all too easy for unpopular leaders to use the Empire as a scapegoat for their failings? 60 years on, isn’t it time for our former colonies to take responsibility for themselves? Speakers include parliamentarians Tristram Hunt and Kwasi Kwarteng and film-maker June Arunga.

The Music Department at King’s College School enjoys an enviable reputation, with choirs and orchestras performing regularly in top London venues. Robin Holloway is a former pupil and an Honorary Fellow of King’s and he has composed Gold on Bronze as a commission for the school’s Centenary Year of Independence. Choir of the Year 2010 Tchaikovsky Serenade for Strings Rachmaninov Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini Tchaikovksy Symphony No.2, ‘Little Russian’ Grzegorz Nowak conductor Roustem Saitkoulov piano Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings is among his most popular works, and was as much a pleasure to write as it is to hear. The usually self-critical composer declared that he loved this piece, and it is easy to understand why: the strings are treated with masterful understanding, whether independently or blended together as an instrumental ‘choir’. Tchaikovsky was, at first, less content with his Symphony No. 2, despite its successful première, but the piece remains a joy, peppered with themes based on Ukrainian folk-songs. These works frame that of another Russian composer, Rachmaninov, whose deft exploration of Paganini’s musical idea includes a sweeping version of the theme and is one of Rachmaninov’s most irresistible melodies. Berlioz’s Béatrice et Bénédict

Beware of the Dragon: Africa must not look to China

Nicholas Collon conductor

An intelligence² Debate

In his final ‘caprice written with the point of a needle’, Berlioz paid homage to Shakespeare and other lifelong pre-occupations. Béatrice et Bénédict will be performed in concert with its sparkling, exuberant music sung in French. The dialogue will be acted in English, restoring the original text (from Much Ado about Nothing) and the composer’s quirky additions.

We know all about the Chinese record in Africa: plundering its natural resources, tossing aside concern for human rights and doing deals with some of the world’s worst regimes. But is this really a fair view? China has an impressive track record of lifting its own millions out of poverty and in places such as Angola it has ensured that basic infrastructure has been built. So which way should Africa look – to the West, to China, or perhaps to its own people? The panel includes Professor Stephen Chan and the Portuguese MEP Ana Maria Gomez.

Colina Mambosa No.1 Colina Three Cabinets of Wonder – Concerto for Violin and Orchestra Górecki Symphony No.3 Richard Bernas conductor Anastasia Khitruk violin Alexandra Hutton soprano This programme brings together recent music from American composer Michael Colina with one of the most popular classical works of the twentieth century, Górecki’s ‘Symphony of Sorrowful Songs’. Colina’s The Unbearable Lightness of Being and his Violin Concerto, ‘Three Cabinets of Wonder’, were both written in 2010, and demonstrate a fascinating contrast between the infectious rhythms of Cuban jazz and contemplative silence. The late Henryk Górecki’s ‘Symphony of Sorrowful Songs’ was composed as a memorial to victims of the Holocaust; its air of ethereal, mournful beauty has touched the hearts of millions. As Górecki put it: “Perhaps people find something they need in this piece of music... somehow I hit the right note”.
