DEAR FRIENDS, WITH THE FAITHFUL SUPPORT OF OUR PARTNERS IN COMMUNITIES, CHURCHES IN CAMEROON, ACROSS THE WORLD AND BY THE GRACE OF GOD, WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO BRING HOPE, LASTING CHANGE AND IMPACT TO MANY COMMUNITIES IN CAMEROON OVER THE LAST YEAR.
In the last year, we started a literacy and development program for eleven communities with funds from the Finnish Government. We also continued to implement the literacy and development program for five communities with funds from the Swedish Government. As well, The Impact Project, a project created in partnership with the Council of Protestant Churches in Cameroon (CEPCA), the Federation of Pentecostal Churches (FEPEC), the Roman Catholic Church and the Forum of Bible Agencies in Cameroon (FOBAC) was developed for the Greater North of Cameroon. We rejoice that in the last year more than 14,000 people participated in literacy classes in communities across the country. Books, alphabet charts and community development literature were developed in the languages we serve in Cameroon.

NEW PROJECT REQUIREMENTS OUR ORGANIZATION DESIRES TO PARTNER WITH COMMUNITIES THAT ARE TRULY HUNGERING AND THIRSTING FOR GOD’S WORD AND WITH THOSE WHO ARE WILLING TO GIVE THEIR BEST FOR THE WORK. In 2014, CABTAL was pleased to partner with several communities in the formation of new projects. There are four conditions that must be met for a community to partner with CABTAL. These requirements ensure sustainable projects that will bear much fruit for the communities involved.

COMMUNITY OWNERSHIP THE BAKWERI AND BAÏTSARAWA COMMUNITIES ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT THE TRANSFORMATION OF THEIR COMMUNITIES THROUGH THEIR LANGUAGE AND BIBLE TRANSLATION PROJECTS. CABTAL previously sent mobilizers for two years to prepare communities for Bible translation and community development. Our organisation has shifted away from this method of involvement. Our new strategy is illustrated below in the communities of Bakwere and Baïtsawara. The leadership of both communities approached CABTAL and asked for help in Bible translation and community development. After initial discussions, the community leaders were engaged in the mobilization of the rest of their communities. CABTAL was then invited for a community wide planning meeting. During those meetings, they were able to establish a shared vision for their respective projects as well as
develop goals for progress in their projects over the next 12 to 18 months. The community leaders then engaged in fundraising, targeting the community members and elites. They raised funds and then provided the manpower to serve in the project. The Bakwere and Baïtsawara people have been giving leadership to their projects as well as reporting to those who have given. When a project is lead and driven at the community level, the conditions are in place for a sustainable impact.

During a devotion, after a passage of scripture had been read in the Meta’ language, a woman recounted in her mother tongue: There is someone who lied to me. He borrowed my money and later said that he had returned it, which he had not done. I told him that on the day he wants to give me the money, he will put the money on a grave. Then we will know who was wrong. Now after hearing the Word of God and understanding forgiveness, I have decided to go and tell him he is forgiven. I thank God for this meeting today. Ma Mary
CABTAL partners with many communities by helping to facilitate the translation work through training and equipping. The actual translation is done by mother tongue speakers in each community. CABTAL is there to support the work.

Projects that started translation in 2014: Bakoko, Bakweri, Essimbi, Ngie, Ngwo, Mfumte, Moghamo and Tuki. The mother tongue translators from most of these communities have completed two translation principles courses. Many of these languages have already completed portions of Scripture in draft form. Imagine all the people represented in each of these communities that will now have access to God’s message for them in their heart language!
LINGUISTICS SOLID LINGUISTIC WORK IS FOUNDATIONAL TO BIBLE TRANSLATION AND LITERACY.
LITERACY Read the following testimony from a participant of the Foundations For Grammar course at the Bamenda Regional Training Center.
Mother tongue languages are so rich and different from English and French that we need a thorough understanding of how they function before translation can begin. One cannot just pick a word and translate it by following English or French grammar rules. When we lack linguistic work in translation, this kind of problem can happen: One translator misused a verb form while translating. As a result, the stories were read as ever-starting and never moving forward. In English, a listener would have heard something like, “Once upon a time Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Once upon a time Magi from the East came to visit Jesus. Once upon a time...” In the Far North, Gavar, Buwal and Mefele are new projects where linguistic work is set to begin in 2015.
This study of grammar has broadened my horizons... The exercises we did were inspiring to me. Some very minor things that we as native speakers do not know but the linguist showed them to us. CABTAL HAS WITNESSED FIRSTHAND HOW TEACHING CHILDREN AND ADULTS TO READ AND WRITE IN THEIR OWN LANGUAGE INCREASES THEIR SUCCESS IN LEARNING AND THEIR SUCCESS IN LIFE. A literate person is someone who has the ability to read and write. It includes the ability to use language, numbers, images and other means to understand and use the dominant symbol systems of a culture (UNESCO).

More than 14,000 people, in 37 communities are learning basic literacy skills in schools, churches and community classes.
OUR OBJECTIVES FOR BASIC LITERACY: • Develop relevant literacy materials that will
help people to become literate (Alphabet Charts, Primers and Transition Primers). • Help equip the literacy supervisors to lead the work. • Facilitate the training of basic literacy teachers in workshops. • Help the literacy supervisors to follow-up the literacy activities in the community, church and school classes. Objectives for basic literacy in 2015: • To organize the national literacy exam by June 2015. • To supply the new communities with basic literacy materials. • To revise the literacy materials for the existing projects. • To connect more with the government and stakeholders for their involvement in basic literacy.

I was very impressed by the quality of the training we had during the five days of this seminar. Among the themes that were developed, I was particularly impressed by human rights and the rights of women. I never realized the level to which the government protected these rights. I would like for my uncle to be at this training to hear what was shared because he beats his wife regularly. I will teach my literates to consider the women to be at the same level as men and to give them a lot of respect. Objectives for functional literacy in 2015:
• Continue and see growth in
the functional literacy classes in all 16 communities. • Prepare the learners for income generating activities starting January 2016. • Produce more books for functional literacy activities. At least ten of the language communities in the Northwest and Southwest have drafted a curriculum for the functional literacy work in their communities.
CHURCH & SCRIPTURE ENGAGEMENT THE REASON FOR THE EXISTENCE OF THIS DEPARTMENT: TO REACH PEOPLE WITH GOD’S WORD THAT THEIR LIVES MIGHT BE TRANSFORMED. I had the desire to reach my people with God’s Word but did not know how to go about it. Thank God for this workshop that has placed the tool that will make this desire a reality. A new department called Church and Scripture Engagement Department was created by the Board in March 2015. It combined the activities of the former Church Relations Department and the Scripture Engagement Department. Highlighted below are the differents goals of this department.
A PRAYER MOVEMENT Our paramount goal is creating a prayer movement inside and outside of the organization, training people to pray for the ministries CABTAL is involved in.

people committed to pray for CABTAL in 2014, and we had 70 point persons (leaders of the prayer groups) in Yaounde, Bamenda and Douala.
URBAN CHURCH MOBILISATION Connected to the previous goal, we are raising prayers and funds for the ministry through Urban Church Mobilisation. In 2014, we had 122 Bible Translation Sundays and 480 people committed to praying. Two years ago I was able to send my children to basic literacy classes after listening to your presentation in my church. Now my children are able to read the Bible in our Mother Tongue and family meditations are done in our mother tongue. Anonymous Mama Maranatha Baptist church

The Goal for 2015 is to organize around 250 Bible Translation Sundays and to raise approximately 15 million CFA. We would also like to mobilize 500 prayer and financial partners through this initiative.
ORAL BIBLE STORIES Given the historically oral nature of Cameroonian languages, Oral Bible Stories have proven to be an effective and exciting tool in many communities.
GOSPEL AND CULTURE Our department strongly desires to equip trainers to facilitate Gospel and Culture Workshops in churches. This is a new initiative and two sessions of training are planned for 2015. Workshops will take place in churches upon the request of church leaders.
The oral stories are shared in churches, at farms, within families and during local association meetings. After hearing God speak in their mother tongue, many people become involved in literacy classes, some go back to church and everyone begins to value their mother tongue.
In 2014, Oral Bible Stories were used in Esimbi, Iyasa, Lefa, Moghamo, Mungaka, Ngie, Nuasue, Nulibie, Numala and Tuki.

People were really amazed to hear the story of Jesus and the Geresene in Nuasue. They found it challenging to discover that He had the power to heal without any drug. They also expressed their surprise to discover His power when He calmed the storm with a single phrase.
Having heard the story of Mary and the Angel in Esimbi, the Mayor of Benakuma Council was so excited to hear how interesting God’s Word was that he challenged all the inhabitants of his community to always buy mother tongue materials.

RURAL CHURCH LEADER TRAINING We are involved in training and equipping church leaders by helping them to learn to read and write their mother tongue and specifically to use the mother tongue Scripture for ministry in the areas of preaching, Bible studies and discipleship. Two sessions are planned for 2015.

ETHNO-ARTS
CABTAL has developed a ministry called LISTEN, whose focus is to train lay leaders (literate and non-literate) to facilitate small group Bible studies through listening to the translated Scriptures in their mother tongue.
Our organisation is supporting the use of art, ethnomusicology and drama in the Tunen project in Central Cameroon.
Training of trainers has been planned and we intend to continue work in the communities of Mpumpong, Bum, Mbembe, Lamnso’ and Meta’ in the coming year.
CABTAL has become our teacher and Jesus has entered my heart. I have given my life to Jesus. I have abandoned the dances in other places and I now sing and dance in the house of God. Enfant Noir Tunen Singer and Musician

LEADERSHIP TRAINING Twice in 2014, the Breaking Down Barriers course shared vision with student pastors concerning their future involvement with using the mother tongue Scriptures in their churches. Aghem, Awing, Babanki, Pinyin, Mbembe, Mokpe and Weh were involved in Scripture engagement courses in 2014.

We see the importance of sharing vision with Student Pastors/Church Leaders in order to prepare them for future involvement in the Bible Translation ministry on the field. This course was given twice in 2014 and because of its success, workshops are planned for fiscal year 2015.

The Mpumpong people can now interact with God’s Word for spiritual transformation through the LISTEN Bible study strategy. After training Bible study facilitators, the Chief and his people were excited as they listened to God’s Word and shared their thoughts. It was amazing to witness some of these people turn to Jesus!
In 2014, for the Finnish functional literacy project, we had 20 courses. During the courses we trained 22 literacy supervisors and 90 functional literacy teachers.
Pastor Jeremy is the pastor of three local churches in northern Cameroon. Most of the people in his churches are illiterate. “How can they be involved in ministry?“ Pastor Jeremy asked last January. The LISTEN ministry is ideal for such communities.
Functional literacy training equips teachers with knowledge on the following so that they have the skills they need to teach in their communities: human rights, gender equality, agriculture and animal husbandry, health issues and business development. Two basic literacy teachers’ courses were organized in Moghamo and in Ngie. In Moghamo, 19 teachers were trained (6 women and 13 men). In Ngie, 35 teachers were trained (16 women and 19 men). Six students in the Translation Degree Program at CBTS Ndu took a 6-week literacy course.
TRANSLATION TRAINING As mentioned previously, several of the new language projects completed the first two Translation Principles courses.
LINGUISTICS TRAINING In 2014, linguistic training was organized in the following areas: • Foundation for grammar courses series 1 & 2 (text collection and noun and noun phrases). • Rapid Word Collection training workshop for dictionary development. • Phonetic data collection. • Workshop on the collection of scientific names of plants and animals for dictionary development. • Dictionary follow-up workshop. • FLEX training (linguistic software). Awing, Aghem, Bambili, Bakweri, Cung, Esimbi, Isu, Lamnso, Mankon, Mmem, Mpumpong, Ngwo and Tchouvok were all involved in linguistic training over the course of the year.

PLATFORM FOR IMPACT A COOPERATIVE EFFORT BETWEEN THE COUNCIL OF PROTESTANT CHURCHES IN CAMEROON, THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, THE FEDERATION OF PENTECOSTAL CHURCHES IN CAMEROON AND THE FORUM OF BIBLE AGENCIES IN CAMEROON. Its goal is to create spiritual, social and economic development in Cameroon. Platform projects are grouped according to the three major regions of Cameroon. 1. The Francophone Greater South of Cameroon (Center, South, East, West and Littoral)
2. The Anglophone South of Cameroon (Northwest and Southwest)
3. The Greater North of Cameroon (Adamawa, North and Far North)
Impact Initiative involves the three regions of the Greater North of Cameroon.
THE CORN & MILLET CHALLENGE The first phase of the project will last three years and is focused on eight communities: Baïtsawara, Dii, Dowayo, Fali, Gbaya, Hdi, Musey and Tupuri.

THE CORN AND MILLET CHALLENGE IS A NEW NATIONAL CAMPAIGN. It was inspired by the Tchouvok community and their Bible translation project. Although they have all kinds of troubles including extremists nearby, poverty, famine and lack of water, community leaders came together and decided that since God has blessed them with corn & millet, every child in the community could contribute a cup of corn or millet and every adult two cups. We want to involve the entire nation in the same challenge to raise funds for the Impact Initiative; an initiative to work for a better future in the Greater North region. This campaign is set to begin in April 2015.

REGIONAL TRAINING CENTERS BAMENDA REGIONAL TRANING CENTER
NEW CENTER IN MAROUA
This past year at the Bamenda Regional Training Center, we constructed a hall that can host two workshops simultaneously, a guard house at the main entrance and a boukarou where people can relax (also acts as an eating space).
In the Greater North, we are on course to get the title in March for the land for the new training center. CABTAL is ready to start building once the title is received.
In 2015, we are hoping to construct the security fence (2500 blocks have already been made), to pave the road from the main gate to the dormitory and to construct the refectory and kitchen.
