PRESIDENT’S REPORT

WELCOME Welcome Members to the first Club journal for 2017. I trust that you all had a great Christmas and an excellent start to 2017, a special welcome to all our Members celebrating the Year of the Rooster. This year will certainly be an exciting time for the Members. Last year definitely ended in spectacular style with Christmas and New Year Eve celebrations throughout the Club. In partnership with Fairfield City Council the Club hosted a spectacular fireworks display which was enjoyed by the members and their families. In January 2017 in line with the building schedule the Club opened the new Poppy Café and Brasserie on the Park which has been so well received by patrons. Later this year the patrons will be delighted to see the opening of the new Eat Street dining precinct in the Club. Considering the building program that commenced in mid-2016 Cabra Vale Ex- Active Servicemen’s Club Ltd remains in strong financial position year to date. The Easter weekend starts on Friday 14 April 2017. Take a look at our entertainment and promotions program in the magazine for all the details.

Don’t forget to join us on Anzac Day 2017, Tuesday 25 April. This year marks the 102nd anniversary of that campaign. Members are invited to join the Club to remember those who have gone before us. Further information is provided in this edition. The Life and Veterans Day luncheon this year will be held on Saturday June 24 2017. This year we will be inducting the 1977 members who have achieved continuous financial membership of the Club for 40 years. Congratulations to all those Members. May I take the opportunity to congratulate Director Tom McDonough who turned 95 in January this year, what an outstanding achievement. All the best from all of us Tommy. On behalf of my fellow Directors I would like to wish you and your families all the very best for 2017 and I look forward to seeing you down at your Club. George Taylor

CEO REPORT

A happy new year to you all and what a very warm start to 2017. I sincerely hope our Members have been able to overcome the record high temperatures we experienced in January. I know I say it each time but 2017 will be an exciting year! I am pleased to advise Members that our patrons enjoyed the opening of the two new and exciting dining precincts at CabraVale Diggers: Brasserie on the Park, and Poppy Café, which both opened on Wednesday January 4, 2017. These dining areas are the first stage of the two part $18M refurbishment of the Club’s dining facilities. On opening day, diners were treated to the exciting unveiling of Brasserie On The Park for lunch, and then the beautifully decorated new venue, steered by head chef Kiran Arora, who hails from the Taj and Ovolo hotel groups worldwide, re-opened for dinner, serving tender chicken, lamb and rump cap from the new rotisserie, gourmet burgers, shared platters, gourmet pizzas, pan tossed pastas, noodles, flame grilled meats, graze menu options, traditional congee, kid’s meals and more. Both dining facilities are open daily, with extended hours on weekends. The all new kitchen features the latest state of the art fit out with an emphasis on allowing diners to see their meals being cooked. The response from patrons has been fantastic, commenting on the fresh new look of our Brasserie and Café. Poppy Café was named by local Toni Luc, as part of a competition where patrons were invited to choose the name of the new café. Toni has a strong personal link with servicemen and their contribution to our society, and so it was quite befitting that her suggestion was successful.

Tommy McDonough, who has been a long standing Board Member for over three decades, achieved a phenomenal milestone when he celebrated his 95th birthday on the same day as the two new venue openings at the Club, and he and his guests enjoyed the new Brasserie on the Park menu inside the brand new private dining area, which Members can utilise for events, parties, or simply just dining out in style. As I have been reporting in previous editions, Board and Management are working on finalising DA applications for the renovations to our gaming/foyer and Bowlers’ amenities, which should be completed very soon. In relation to the Hotel DA, this project is taking a bit longer than expected, as we are currently consulting a high level urban planner to ensure that we are proactively answering any potential concerns from Council. I’m sure Members don’t need reminding about all the wonderful events we have happening at the Club, but please look further into this magazine to see what’s planned for you to enjoy at Cabra-Vale Diggers over Easter, Anzac Day and Mother’s Day. I personally can’t wait for Easter to arrive as it means Autumn weather is in full swing, and we can enjoy some more comfortable temperatures. We look forward to seeing you at Cabra-Vale Diggers. The Centenary of the Anzac/Fowler Electorate Committee was formed with representatives from different local Clubs under the guidance of Mr. Chris Hayes, MP for Fowler in early 2013. The Committee has spent the last 3 years developing programs and projects ensuring that both Primary and Secondary students from the Fowler Electorate are educated in the proud history of the Anzacs. The theme “Not Taking Peace For Granted” was announced and the establishment of the website “On This Day” was launched. To date they have organised the growing of seedlings propagated from the Lone Pine in Gallipoli, the purchase of a framed artwork from the Australian War Memorial (painted by

George Lambert in 1920) plus the hosting of a successful Arts Competition involving over 41 Primary and Secondary schools, referencing their interpretation of the Anzac tradition and sponsored by the Federal Government. The Club’s Marketing Department together with The Daily Press Group designed and printed a collection of all the submissions, which spanned across the different mediums of art, poetry, song, dance and multimedia. Cabra-Vale Diggers plays an active role in this Committee through its generous support in time by President George Taylor and fellow Directors, along with the Group General Manager Michael Foulkes who works tirelessly with the group, “We are told that we are one of

DEVELOPMENT

COMING

2017!

WE’RE EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE STAGE 2 OF OUR $18 MILLION DEVELOPMENT IS UNDERWAY

As part of the $18 million development at Cabra-Vale Diggers, the first stage of which has just opened in early January - the well received Brasserie On The Park and Poppy Cafe - Cabra-Vale Diggers is looking forward to the next stage of the biggest developments in the Club’s history: the opening of the most unique, forward thinking eating precinct Sydney has seen: Asian Eat Street. An ambitious project, which has had patrons buzzing since it was first flagged, it is set for completion in July/August 2017. With the same project management and design firm on board which saw Brasserie On The Park and Poppy Cafe come to life it promises to not only show the calibre of Asian food possible, and the realisation of a dream food destination for the Club, it promises to become a real talking point and hub for the very best in Asian cuisine, not only in quality, but in the design and presentation of the venue.

Located in the old, just closed Bartley Bistro area, developers and builders have taken over the area and are busy making it all come to life. Think hawker style food stands, open kitchen heaven for true food aficionados where they get to see how their food is cooked, adding to the drama of the venue. What this new Asian Eat Street precinct means in terms of the community is to provide it a multi-faceted east versus west eating hub, while at the same time allowing the Club to diversify its revenue base. We see this as a multi stage food revolution: Brasserie On The Park and Poppy Cafe is stage one, Asian Eat Street is stage two, and the Steak House will be stage three while the dining facilities of the new proposed hotel at Cabra-Vale is stage four. Stages one and two are costing the Club $18 million and will be able to cater up to 900 diners.

Discerning diners have been enjoying the menu choices and beautiful ambience of the all new Brasserie On The Park since it opened on January 4 this year. Passionately steered by head chef Kiran Arora, who hails from the Taj and Ovolo five star hotel groups worldwide and is an award winner from the Australian Hotels Association, Brasserie On The Park is opened for lunch and dinner. The centrepiece of Brasserie On The Park is the new rotisserie, serving tender

chicken, lamb, and rump cap plated up or in a baguette or sliders, burgers from the gourmet burger bar, shared platters, gourmet pizzas, pan tossed pastas, noodles, flame grilled meats, graze menu options including oysters and Caesar salad, traditional congee, kids’ meals, and more. The all-new kitchen features the latest state of the art fit out with an emphasis on allowing diners to see their meals being cooked, even the made-in-house pizza bases being turned into delicious pizzas.

So much choice, so much excitement, so much for Members and Guests to look forward to. Says Cabra-Vale Diggers CEO Boris Belevski: “What it means in terms of the community is to provide it a multi-faceted east versus west eating hub and at the same time the Club is diversifying its revenue base. Stages one and two are costing the club $18 million, and will be able to cater up to 900 diners.”

Adds head chef Kiran Arora: “We’ve got our valued Club clientele of over 25,000 members, so if they would like to come in and they desire their regular, favourite menu item, it’s likely to be there, but now we have a contemporary option on this staple for them. We are pleased to be catering to different diners, according to the tastes. The interior is amazing. It’s quite classic and there is so much attention to detail. We are proud of what we are offering our diners here, and there is much more to come.”

BRASSERIE ON THE PARK

K

iran Arora has joined Cabra-Vale Diggers as head chef, and he comes from great stock.

After 15 years in five star hotels, and hailing from the Taj hotel group in India - one of the largest hotel chains worldwide, where he won numerous awards for his work including an accolade from the Australian Hotels Association - he has been with CabraVale Diggers for close to one year, and is already making his mark.

HEAD CHEF KIRAN ARORA

If social media posts on Kiran so far are anything to go by, he is a very well respected member of the culinary community, and much loved and acknowledged for his talent.

Spearheading Brasserie On The Park and Poppy Cafe, he says of the start of the art fitout: “It’s very much a show kitchen. So immediately the guest feels they are interacting with the staff, they can see what we are creating. “The rotisserie is of course a first for this region, we have gourmet pizzas made in front of you, from scratch. “Sharing platters is something new for us, and even menu staples like burgers and schnitzels are made from scratch, served with brioche buns, truffle mayonnaise, and wasabi aioli. All hotel elements in a Club environment, but many of our staples remain. I think Cabra-Vale Diggers members will be blown away.”

Cabra-Vale Diggers patrons have already started to embrace and enjoy the all new Poppy Café since its opening on January 4 this year. It’s one of two exciting new dining precincts at the Club, with Brasserie On The Park also part of the first stage of the two-part $18 million refurbishment of the Club’s dining facilities.

Poppy Café is beautifully decorated and constructed, under the expert watchful management from the Rohrig Group, stamping their style on both venues, and set to impress even more with the launch of the Asian Eat Street at Cabra-Vale Diggers later this year. Poppy Café was named by local Toni Luc, as part of a competition where patrons were invited to choose the name of the new Café. Toni’s connection with Australian soldiers and her affinity with what the Diggers stand for led her to choose this name. She had three choices, but for her the only one was Poppy Café,

in connection with the poppy flower a traditional symbol of remembrance. Toni was on hand at the opening to dine at Poppy Café, and meet with Cabra-Vale Diggers CEO Boris Belevski. “It was an absolute delight to meet the winner, Toni, who entered our Members’ competition, and she came up with the name ‘Poppy’ Café,” said Belevski. “Toni has a strong personal link with servicemen and their contribution to our society and hence it was quite befitting that her suggestion was successful.” Poppy Café serves traditional and

gourmet pizza, light meals, savoury pastries, dessert, coffee and more, and is open Sunday to Thursday from 9am – 11.30pm, and on Friday and Saturday from 9am – 2am. The design of both new eating precincts means that you’re greeted with the fresh new look as soon as you step into the Club’s foyer. The relaxed vibe of Poppy Café, complete with comfortable armchairs, and its opening hours, means you can enjoy what’s on offer for longer and at your leisure. 21

COMMUNITY

REMEMBRANCE DAY Red poppies dotted the crowd as many gathered to commemorate lives lost during conflict and war at the Remembrance Day Service in November. This Service marked 98 years since the end of World War I. The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month was originally known as Armistice Day and recognised the sacrifices made

by soldiers during World War I, but was later changed to Remembrance Day. It now commemorates all lives lost as well as those who survived armed conflicts in Australia’s history. During the service, attended by local dignitaries, the “Last Post” was sounded by a bugler followed by one minute silence and “Reveille”.

(L-R) President George Taylor, Federal MP Chris Hayes & State MP Nick Lalich

OPAL FUNCTION & EVENTS LAUNCH November saw the launch of OPAL Functions and Events; Cabra-Vale Diggers’ newly branded Function Centre, steered by Function & Events Manager Megan Orahem. After extensive renovations and upgrades, which have been well received by new and returning clients, the rebrand offers a new level of service and food, all still within a welcoming and friendly environment.

WHITE RIBBON DAY MARCH As many as 1500 people joined in the March from Cabra-Vale Memorial Park to Freedom Plaza on White Ribbon Day in November. Cabramatta Local Area Command led the White Ribbon Day March, with representatives of Cabra-Vale Diggers Board and Management in attendance showing their support for the cause. Cabramatta crime manager Darren Newman said domestic violence made up 30-40 per cent of police work.

“The perpetrators are cowards and, if any members of the community know a domestic violence perpetrator, my advice is to ostracise, excommunicate, challenge and tell them domestic violence is unacceptable and you never want anything to do with them,” he said. The walk commenced at 10.30am and was followed by an assembly at Freedom Plaza where speakers from Cabramatta Police and Council addressed the 1500+ strong crowd. Cabra-vale Diggers proudly sponsored 1000 bottles of water towards the event.

CHRISTMAS CARNIVAL A Merry Minion Christmas they say, well so said by over 4,500 people who attended the Cabra-Vale Diggers Christmas Carnival in December. With free show bags, unlimited rides and bonus food and beverages, the children of Cabra-Vale Diggers Members relished in the glorious summer sun. The Christmas mood was set with an impressive show case of five hours of live entertainment, featuring special guests, The Minions and a myriad of performers, not to mention the 60 piece Rock n Soul choir who took the crowd into the twilight hours with classic carols and festive joy. “It’s a great opportunity for the Club to give back to the community,” said Michael Foulkes, General Manager of CabraVale Diggers. “With the increasing strain to the cost of living, there aren’t too many places a family can be entertained for so many hours, for free!”

Q

YOU HAD A VERY HECTIC YEAR END TO 2016, TELL US ABOUT IT Last year we finished off strongly with a fantastic Inaugural Presentation Night, the AGM and a Blitz Tournament which was successful on many levels. After this, in late December our Xmas Party was a success in socialising with mums and dads, partners of our chess members - from kids 5yrs to seniors 80yrs - all good positive vibes around our Blitz Xmas Special and our Honour Board celebrating our history and office bearers - Our Perpetual Champions Trophy with 40 years of shields to embrace the next generation of Champions; Kevin Nguyen, Jason Wei, Jayden Phan, Marcus Ryan, Aaron Thai, David Cheng, Benjamin Tran, Jayden Nguyen and Peter Tran.

Q

WHAT TRENDS DO YOU SEE HAPPENING WITHIN THE CHESS CLUB AT THE MOMENT? Recently, we have seen an influx of new members especially in the 5 to 7 yr. age bracket. This welcome development has encouraged us to expedite the implementation of some special programs that will cater to the needs of all our junior members. The addition of keen and promising youngsters to our group such as Selhan and Dzenon Bajrami, Carly and Carsen Hua, Jonluke Corona, Yongtai Deng and Jeremy Guerra and who could forget the youngest girls Christine Phan and JaymeeRose Nguyen certainly augurs well for the future of our club.

Q

WHAT PROGRAMS ARE IN STORE FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE YEAR? At the start of our 3rd year of the CVDCC we are looking forward to new ventures and directions. Our juniors at Canley Vale Public School (CVPS) came 6th in the NSWJCL last November 2016. This is a major achievement and boost to our CVDCC and affiliation with our community CVPS. We have produced four great champions at the school. Anthony Ta 2013, Marcus Ryan 2014, Jason Wei 2015 and Jayden Phan 2016, which is the direct result of John Tran’s teaching and Nigel Harte’s mentoring. We are looking forward to this year with Fabrizio Corona coming on board as junior development Co-ordinator. He will be working closely with Head of Junior Chess Development John Tran to enhance our junior programs and to promote the launch of a new Chess variant which he has named, “Tribal Chess Survival” where the emphasis is on the strategic understanding and

Although one of the newer Clubs to join the CVD Sub Club stable (only 3 years young), the Chess Club is by all means not the wallflower of the group. Tournaments are abuzz with activity during the interschool Chess Comps fetching as many as 400 students from the SW Metropolitan Region into our doors.

teamwork. Fab will be a regular along with John and Nigel on Mondays from 4.30pm to 6pm; Nigel will also continue with the seniors from 7pm until late. We are looking forward to June - August 2017 Grade (U/1500 and /1700) during the afternoons from 2pm. This year our teams are looking strong and are trying to achieve the top 3 in all divisions - Good Luck Guys!!! Some exciting initiatives are in the pipeline including a Premier League Club Competition which will see the biggest chess clubs in Sydney challenge each other in teams of 12 versus 12 for prize money and prestige. We are confident this will revitalize over the board play at club level with obvious benefits to our members, the chess community, and more generally our parent club. (CVD) Most importantly for our juniors, we are working on “The Youngest Grandmaster” program where we aim to identify, train

and nurture young chess talent every step of the way and ultimately accelerate their development toward the title of Grandmaster. We are also negotiating with Fitness Forum Health Club - Green Valley for the right to host the “Candidates Tournament” whereby the winner will gain an invite to their next chess classic. We have a lot to look forward to in 2017 and beyond. New programs/ New Concepts/ Innovative Idea’s exploring the horizon of chess tournaments and Competitions and hopefully some New Trophies to put in our New Trophy Cabinet!!! Also this year 2017 we have devised a full Chess Calendar to coincide with NSWCA Tournaments and to complement our own CVD Chess Championship with a new junior Chess Championship as well as numerous rapids and blitz competitions.

Q

ANY MESSAGES TO YOUNG BUDDING CHESS STARS? Look out. CVDCC is on the move and well positioned to be the Chess Hub of the South West Metropolitan Region, now and into the future. Kids come and join us - it’s fun and exciting - seniors it’s an exploration of developing the mind - to create achievements and friendships that last a lifetime... CHECK MATE.

SUB CLUB REPORTS

CHESS CLUB The New Year of 2017 is well under way and the CVD Chess Club is thriving with new members and old alike. We are striving to put in place our new competitions and concepts together to improve chess in our South Western Region of Sydney. By now the NSWCA has acknowledged our new intervention into chess competitions and our arrival onto the stage of chess club management. We are a young club of only three years (Est. 2014), going into our third year yet competing with clubs of veteran status, however we are punching well above our weight and showing great signs of a club maturity and prospering into a dynamic force to be reckoned with in the near future. With the likes of our Head of Junior Chess Development – John H. Tran and the new energy of Fabrizio Corona – Junior Chess Coordinator, our future with the youngsters is looking favourably optimistic and secured in developing young talent to reach its full potential. We also have one of our Fore – Fathers / Mr Krste Blazeski – Honorary Member : to add his form of expressing chess through Grand Master games of whom he is a collector’s dream - philosopher –a chess connoisseur – a master’s insight to high quality chess tournament games. With such talented mentors our juniors and youth programs are destined to be full of wonderful insights and games that will inspire our youth to become champions in the future. I applaud the dedication and motivation that we have set for our future visions and development, that will inspire future generations to be inspirational to all players and connoisseurs of chess – here in Australia yet also internationally. CVDCC has great passion for the young generation to put Australia on the map of chess throughout the world and to

become a Champion amongst Champions ... A Higher Vision amongst the Stars of the Future. Reflecting back to last year’s AGM and Inaugural Presentation Night [ Nov ] followed by our Blitz tournament, we had very successful numbers of around forty plus which allowed our CVD President Mr George Taylor and Group Manager Mr Michael Foulkes to witness firsthand the growth of the CVDCC.

This leads us to the final chapter of 2016 – Xmas Party – Dec : where we had fun playing chess with the kids and having raffles with Xmas gifts and blitz games with small prizes and speeches giving awards to our previous President – John H Tran / Junior Chess Development / Plague Award –Outstanding Achievement ... 4th NSWJCL 2015 / 6th NSWJCL 2016 ...

They were impressed by how the AGM procedures went and how smooth the handover of new office bearers came into place.

Now finally to our senior teams where we had two top players in the NSWCA grade matches for 2016 –

Mr George Taylor presented our players with their trophies and awards with great ease and merit. I know the young and very young were in awe of this very important man who gave his time to serve others in their accomplishments. Prodigious appreciation to you George and the manner in which you held your position of office on the night – kids were enthralled ... Thank you for your warm and sincere thoughts. Mr Michael Foulkes brought knowledge and expertise to our proceedings as well as an extra photographer hands to give some remarkable shots on the night. All in all the night was a success to one and all – a very positive energy indeed – for every one of us. Thank you Michael for your support and encouragement. Our Champions trophy went to Samir Bajrami – our Inaugural Champ –2016. Golden Players Award to Krste Blazeski – 2016. Club Championship – 3rd to Gojko Trzin – 2016. With many more trophies to follow for most improved / encouragement awards / club recognition / sportsmanship / and kids medallions for Representing & Participation ... all in all awards for specific merits and achievements. We must also thank our Megan [Events & Function Manager] in taking care of us throughout the year and providing us service with a smile.

FISHING CLUB NOVEMBER TRIP Windy, fished 60 Fathom, the reef was hard to hold bottom. Dave got a nice Snapper although a few sinkers were lost to small Leather Jackets, but no more fish. The wind was getting stronger so we tried in closer. The sea was sloppy fish elusive but we kept trying. Dave caught another Snapper, the man’s a freak. Another trip we’d like to forget! The new Cabra-Vale Diggers caps looked good but fish count didn’t. Total catch 6 Tiger Flathead, 6 Jackets and 2 Reds. DECEMBER TRIP The Wind would not go away, sloppy sea current running all going against each other and us. Bad fishing conditions fished the second 60s and had to drop one line at a time then 2nd 3rd and so on half the crew were down, half the crew were up. Tangles were minimised this way Adam had a blinder he caught more fish today than he has all year fishing with his antique broom stick. Pete was crook in the greasy swells but came good and finished his day with a double header. Shannon was the Snapper king with 2 nice Reds. Dave and Pete Whisk got a feed in between drinks. Hung got a real mixed bag while Roger showed he’s in retirement - last minute gift idea for him some heavier braid, probably our best trip this year hope 2017 is better for us. Total catch 31 Flathead, 20 Jackets, 5 Morwong, 4 Reds, 1 Hussar and 1 Gurnard.

CAMERA & VISUAL ARTS CLUB On the last issue of the magazine we were considering future excursions and bus trips to certain places, this all turned out fine with our bus trip to Wollongong via the sea bridge (walk) then onto the Wollongong Botanic Gardens. From there we had lunch at the Illawarra Master Builders Club, wonderful meal there. We finished the sightseeing at the Buddhist temple and motored back home arriving back at the Diggers Club around 5.30pm. The day had started off quite grey and really not knowing what to expect and our first stop at the lookout looking down the coast with the long view out over the Sea Bridge and towards Wollongong. Very misty, difficult to make out much more than the Sea Bridge from here, and as we went down to the next level and across the Sea Bridge the low cloud was still hanging about.

And at the end of the evening when all the hard work was done and the award certificates were given out, the end of the year point score champion was Sue. Congratulations Sue. Second place went to Sandie and coming in in third spot was Rachelle. This year the Most Improved Awardwent to Bob Ward and the Encouragement Award went to both Suy Hong Taing and Lynette Dudley. Prestige honour of the evening Top Shot chosen by Nic Peters went to Kerrie James. Well done Kerry!

Nic Peters was our visiting judge for this momentous occasion, I wouldn’t fancy this job, there were at least half a dozen images that stood out for me that would have won the Top Shot but he had to pick just one. A big well done for the run through of each 36

30 year Service Jennie Webster Bronze Award Alanna Manu’a - 11 year old Circle Defender with a very bright future. Alanna hopes to be selected into the 12 year rep team in 2017 and we wish her all the very best of luck. Silver Award Jade Dawson - 12 year Circle Defender. Jade had a very big year being named in the State PSSA team that competed in the Nationals where her team were runners up. She was also an integral member of the Liverpool City Rep team who were also State Age Runners Up. These are sensational results and Jade hopes to replicate her hard work in 2017!

There were some big black clouds circling the camp when we reached the Botanic Gardens and light rain had started to precipitate prior to our arrival and briefly got heavy as we walked to the gardens, but stopped after a minute or two and we didn’t have any wet stuff after that for the rest of the day. There was a wedding being held in a gazebo while we were there (shame for them that it rained - but it wasn’t for long). Lots of colour, the gardens were beautifully kept, lovely and fresh after the rain. On to our luncheon date at the Illawarra Master Builders Club, spent a very pleasant hour or so indulging in all sorts of wonderful food and just about the best company you could have imagined. The Buddhist temple was the next stop on the list and again it was so clean and pristine after the rain and it was good to explore again the grounds and the ponds full of Coy Carp, ducks and lizards, lots of statues and things that go bump in the night. Getting a bit frazzled by now and Jose decided that it was time to head towards home. Thank you Jose for taking us all on a wonderful trip, thank you Erica for the bus, thank you Lynette for organizing the details, thank you to the team for being on board. Lots of happy moments. Our last official meeting for 2016 was a competition night to end the year and we have to thank all the members for their enthusiasm during the year Well done everyone, tremendous roll up, thank you all for the display stand help, and thank you Sandie for setting up the tables and chairs.

Gold Award Tiarna Hanson - 15 year old Goal Shooter/ Goal Attack. Tiarna had a breakout year in 2016 and was a valued member of the Liverpool City Rep team who were crowned State Age Champions. Tiarna used her experience coaching our Club’s wonderful young U9 team and hopes to coach them in their first competitive season in 2017. Tiarna is also a very talented umpire and has a real future in this area should she choose to ultimately travel that path. In the latter part of 2016, Tiarna sustained an injury but is hoping to pick up where she left off for 2017 in her first year of senior netball. Tiarna has been named apprentice coach to the U13 Liverpool City Rep Team.

TRAVELLING BOWLS CLUB REPORT

Club Coach of the Year Sharyn Harris - Sharyn is a long-time member of Cabra Vale and returned in 2016 to coach our U11A team to their first grand final win in a thriller. Every one of the team’s players really improved under Sharyn’s wonderful coaching.

To our long term members and more recent I wish you all a very Happy & Healthy New Year and trust you all had a fabulous Christmas. Our last day on the 2016 Calendar was our Christmas party held on the 18th December which started after the special AGM of the mother with a late morning game of bowls followed by a sumptuous lunch in the bowlers /sports lounge of our club. We were very honoured and privileged to have attending our lunch the President of our mother club Mr. George Taylor and his partner Rhonda Boyce.

Junior Umpire of the Year Jayde Woodford - a very well deserved award for this talented young umpire and player. Jayde really applied herself in 2016 and improved greatly and was rewarded as our Club’s Junior Umpire of the Year. We are very proud of her achievements. Senior Umpire of the Year Luana Aukafolau - Not only is Luana an extremely talented player, she is also an umpire with incredible potential. In 2016, Luana’s team was crowned as the U15s State Age Champions along with Tiarna Hanson! Luana used her experience and coached one of the club’s U8s teams in 2016 and for 2017 she will continue to umpire, has been named as apprentice coach to the Liverpool City U12 Rep Team and was appointed as a Training Partner to Eastwood Ryde Hawks Premier League U20s team. CRICKET CLUB REPORTOn a sad On a sad note our season finished with the untimely death of one of our long term players, Beau Carney. LADIES AUXILLARY REPORT Well members, here we are with the first report for 2017. How the year of 2016 passed. The Ladies Auxiliary have had a mostly happy and fruitful year. Our quarterly stalls held in the Club were very successful, enabling us to raise funds for donations to our local charities. The generous purchase of raffle tickets at our monthly concerts made it even more satisfying. Unfortunately there was one item of sadness, that of the passing of a very special member Dianna Day, who was a long time member of our group. Dianna was a hardworking, cheerful lady who was always ready to help wherever she could despite her failing health. We were blessed to have her attend our Christmas Party just one week before her passing, RIP Dianna, you will be missed by all. Our Christmas Party was a wonderful occasion with great food and Christmas cheer, complete with a visit from Santa who generously permitted all to have a photo with him. We look forward to 2017 continuing to raise funds for worthwhile charities in our local area and organising our monthly concerts for our senior members and friends. We thank the Board Members and staff at Cabra-Vale Diggers for all their assistance and HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL.

MEN’S BOWLING CLUB REPORT

WOMEN’S BOWLING CLUB REPORT

With Xmas 2016 now all but a distant memory, our focus at this time of the year is preparations for the 2017 Pennant season … and I can report CVDMBC are once again firmly committed to a successful year in this

To all our members we wish you a very Happy & Healthy New Year and trust you all had a fantastic Christmas. Last year was a very interesting year with our Pennants firstly; that unfortunately we were unlucky to have enough wins to move our club into the district play offs. In 2017, our members have elected to play in the Medal rather than compete in Pennants so with a bit of luck and good bowling our girls will do better.

regard. Our club has representative teams in three divisions – the 4’s, 6’s and 7’s … which is the same as last year. Members are encouraged to get behind the teams / selectors so we can improve on last year’s excellent results - Go Diggers! Whilst on the subject of Pennants, our club has been selected to jointly host the the 2017 Bowls NSW State Pennant Finals – Grade One …along with St Johns Park BC. This is a blue ribbon event for Bowls in NSW and Cabra-Vale Diggers are honoured to be able to jointly host this prestigious event. The final will be contested over the weekend of the 4th – 6th August 2017 and all members are asked to keep that weekend free to assist with the huge logistical requirement ….as and where needed. A sub-committee has been formed to oversee this tournament and liaise with SJP …Bowls Secretary (Graham McKellar) Green-keeper (Brent Norman) and IT liaison (Greg Tuckwell) will be our member’s firstpoint-of-contact for more information as the dates get closer. Our club championships are also now underway for 2017 with the fours tournament commencing in February – good luck one and all. …and don’t forget to access all the upto-date Bowls information via our Bowls Facebook page – https://www.facebook.com/ cabravalebowls Until next time

All our in house championships were all played in the true spirit of the game with the competition being fierce and with most finals only being decided in the last couple of ends or the last end of the game. Congratulations to all members that entered as this is where you truly gain experience in the game of bowls. Our club was very privileged to host a couple of the District games such as the five a side. On behalf of our committee and members again a big thank you to our head Green Keeper Brent Norman and his crew for the excellent conditions of the greens as our District committee were very impressed. As the year drew to a close we played the Presidents Pairs followed by our Christmas triples and finally celebrated Christmas with our party held on the 14th December. Here is where we bought back a tradition of past Presidents by decorating our tables and what fun was had by all. Our catering staff decided the winner on the day with Robyn Sampson and team members taking out the prize. On behalf of our Ladies bowling club we would like to say a big thank you to Megan and the catering staff and CVD mother club for the sumptuous Christmas lunch served. In 2017 we are looking forward to another exciting year with in house championships, the Medal and any other District games that our club would be very proud to host. To our members let us make 2017 a better year than 2016 and play the game of bowls as always in the true spirit that it is meant to be played in.

ANZAC DAY T WO UP FACT: Anzac Day is the only day in the calendar year when the game of Two Up is legally acceptable — unless you live in Broken Hill or Kalgoorlie where two-up is permitted all year round.
