Excessively loaded filters create challenges such as excessive fuel burn, elevated soot indexes, smoke, higher engine temperatures, turbo over-speeds and loss of power.

While new air filters provide an acceptable level of engine protection, their efficiency increases as they load with contaminant during use. Do not fall into the mindset of “filters are cheap, just replace them”. Prematurely replacing air filters means the media never achieves optimal efficiency and over servicing can result in costly implications such as:

• higher oil burns

• premature loss of performance

• failure to achieve OEM published engine life

Removing and refitting an air filter to conduct a visual inspection will always do more harm than good.

Every filter changeout exposes your engine to contamination during service works. Servicing air filters by hours or odometer readings is easy to schedule however, this practice will probably fail to provide the lowest total cost of ownership.

The only accurate means of determining a filters condition, or remaining usable life, is by measuring the vacuum created in the clean air duct work between the air filter and the engine with the use of a restriction indicator.
