• Oil and water don’t mix. They repel each other like opposite ends of a magnet. Your skin secretes oil called sebum. Splash water on your skin, and the oil repels the water and nothing gets very clean. That’s where soap comes in. But before we discuss why soap works, let us discuss what soap is. • Basically speaking, soap is oil plus alkali. For centuries, that meant fat plus lye. Colonists and pioneers saved fat scraps from their butcher blocks and dinner tables. They also saved the ashes from their fireplace, which they placed in a barrel with a spigot at the bottom. In Case You Missed It... Yale Beats Harvard in College Prank

CONNECTICUTT (11-302004) Yale students have pulled off one of the most audacious pranks on their Harvard counterparts in their 121-year rivalry. The Yale pranksters, pretending to be members of the Harvard Pep Squad, passed numbered colored pieces of paper throughout the bleachers on the Harvard side. The Harvard fans were told that when held up together it would spell out: “GO HARVARD”. Hoping to support their Ivy League college team, hundreds of Harvard fans, in unison, held up the huge message. But only fans on the Yale side of the stadium got the joke as they read the opposition announce in big letters: “WE SUCK.” But in the final analysis, perhaps the Yaleys should have paid more attention to the game, the final score Harvard 35 – Yale 3.

HOLLAND - Dutch twins have discovered they share the same pin number for their bank account. One out of a thousand members at the Dutch Rabo Bank share the same pin as someone else. The Dutch Rabo Bank has 1.25 million members. Jiddo Alberts has had his pin since joining the bank a few years ago, his brother Jefta has it only a week, since his bankcard was stolen. Jefta complained to his brother that the new code was difficult to remember. When Jiddo asked what it was, they found out they had the same code. Both brothers don’t want to change. “We don’t care, as long as we don’t share the same bank account,” Jefta said.

NORTH CAROLINA - Alligators are infamously fierce creatures and have existed in the primary Crocodylia body form for millions of years, making them living dinosaurs. These massive reptiles have adapted in some unusual ways to ensure their long-term survival, and one such adaptation astounded visitors and staff at a North Carolina swamp park this month. Shallotte River Swamp Park in Ocean Isle Beach, 200 miles east of the state’s largest city Charlotte, recently posted a video on Facebook documenting what appeared to be a pond full of dead alligators. A massive cyclone had blown through the state the week before, bringing record lows, and causing the pond to freeze over. Crocodiles aren’t exactly known for their love of icy waters, so seeing a bunch of snouts sticking out through the ice, you’d be inclined to think that the huge reptiles had died. But you’d be wrong. Apparently, alligators instinctively know when water

is about to freeze and stick their snouts above the surface at the right moment while the water turns to ice around them. “They have been around for millions of years,” George Howard, the general manager of the park, said of the species. “They are one of the only species in existence that is virtually unchanged. And they continue to be good at just surviving. This is just another example of how tough they are.” Similar to many other reptiles, alligators slip into a state of brumation (similar to hibernation) when temperatures dip below a certain threshold. Their breathing and metabolism slow down, and they enter a vegetative state for the duration of the cold spell. Brumation is normal reptilian behavior, but bizarre nonetheless for visitors seeing toothy snouts sprouting from the ice.

Meanwhile, Back in Heaven… One day God was looking down at Earth and saw all of the rascally behavior that was going on. So he called one of His angels and sent the angel to Earth for a time. When he returned, he told God, “Yes, it is bad on Earth; 95% are misbehaving and only 5% are not.” God thought for a moment and said, “Maybe I had better send down a second angel to get another opinion.” So God called another angel and sent him to Earth for a time too. When the angel returned he went to God and said, “Yes, it’s true.

Stop Smoking. Start Screening. Lung cancer is by far the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women; about one out of four cancer deaths are from lung cancer. Each year, more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined. Despite the very serious prognosis of lung cancer, some people with earlier stage cancers are cured. More than 430,000 people alive today have been diagnosed with lung cancer at some point. Prevention offers the greatest opportunity to fight lung cancer, such as preventing smoking through our Quit Tobacco class. Our Lung screening program can find cancerous tumors through early detection when they are much more likely to be cured.

Quit Tobacco Class

Come to this 90 minute class to learn: • Why you use tobacco/reasons to quit • Identify your triggers and how to beat them • How to use nicotine replacement products effectively • How to establish positive support/tips on dealing with cravings

tccancer.org

Next class date: Tuesday, January 23rd, 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Classes and resources are FREE. Classes are held monthly. First time participants will have the choice of a nicotine replacement patch or nicotine gum. For more information or reservations call: (509) 737-3427.

Lung Screening Program

Eligibility Requirements • Ages 55 - 77 • Current smoker or quit within the last 15 years • Equivalent 30 pack-years* • No history of lung cancer

Ask your primary care physician for a referral to the Tri-Cities Cancer Center’s Lung Screening Program. For more information on this life saving program, call our Patient Navigator at (509) 737-3405.

* pack-years = average number of cigarettes smoked per day multiplied by the number of years a person has smoked. 2 packs/day X 15 years = 30 pack-years 4 packs/day X 10 years = 40 pack-years

The Earth is in decline; 95% are misbehaving, but 5% are being good.” God was not pleased. So He decided to send a letter to the 5% that were good, because He wanted to encourage them. Give them a little something to help them keep going. Do you know what the letter said? Okay, just wondering; I didn’t get one either...

Just What Every Boy & Girl Needs . . .

IOWA - Remember that time when micro pigs were all the rage and made everyone go ooh and aah? Well, now seems to be the time of micro cows and the adorable tiny cattle are proving wonderful pets. There are very few micro-cattle breeders around the world. and Dustin Pillard, who has been breeding them on his farm in Iowa, is probably the most well-known. He has been featured in newspapers and TV news specials numerous times since he began breeding micro cattle in 1995, but his miniature cows are now the smallest they’ve ever been. Dustin Pillard, a 46-year-old father of three, grew up in the city but regularly spent time on his grandparents’ farm near Cedar Rapids. In 1992, while in college, he attended a cattle auction where he saw micro-cows for the first time. He was fascinated with them, so three years later, when he became the owner of a 10-acre ranch, he knew he had to populate it with the tiny creatures. He bought five animals and started what is known today as the Oxen Ridge Miniature Cattle farm. Dustin says, the tiny cattle very much resemble dogs in temperament: “Many of them have

INDIA - One of India’s largest coal reserves, the Jharia coalfield, situated in the Dhanbad district of Jharkhand, is the site of one of the longest-burning fires in the world. The area has been burning continuously for over 100 years. Mining in the Jharia coalfields, which cover over 100 square miles, began in the late 1800s, under British rule. The first detected fire broke out in 1916, but by the 1980s over 70 blazes had sprouted up, and none of them could be contained, let alone extinguished. As they were often deep underground, they were left to smolder in the hope that they would eventually burn out on their own. Unfortunately, a new mining operation in 1973 smothered that hope. When the new operation started it introduced oxygen into the mining shafts and fed the smoldering embers until they became massive flames, some recorded at 60 feet high. Experts are skeptical that the fires can ever be fully extinguished as long as they have fuel to burn.

HOW DOES SOAP WORK? continued from front page Water, poured over the ashes and left to soak, would form lye which was then drained off from the bottom. The fat scraps would be rendered in a vat over a fire, then the lye would be added. After much stirring and cooking, a chemical reaction would take place and soap was the result. Too much lye, and the soap would be harsh on the skin. Too much fat, and the soap would be greasy. • The newly formed soap would then be poured into boxes to harden and cure for several months. But why does a combination of fat and ash carry off dirt? Let us get out our microscopes. • Water is a molecule composed of hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen end of the molecule has a positive charge, and the oxygen end is negatively charged. Oil, however, has neither a positive

• A molecule of soap is shaped like a snake, with the head being the water-loving sodium compound, and the tail being the water-hating stearates. Add soap to water, and the tail end tries to get away from the water. Add something greasy to the water, and the tail end of the soap molecules rush to cling to the compatible polar charge of the grease molecules. The grease molecule bonds with the stearate tail, and floats away led by the water-loving sodium head.

SOAP HISTORY • Around 1000 B.C., Romans performed animal sacrifices to the gods on Mount Sapo. The fat from the animals mixed with the ashes of the sacrificial fires. This mix of fat and alkali flowed down to the Tiber River and accumulated in the clay soils. Women washing clothing there found the clay seemed to help get things cleaner.

Individually wrapped cakes of soap were first manufactured in New York in 1830 by a soapmaking company called Colgate, now known for its toothpaste. Previously the merchant merely hacked a chunk off a huge block of soap.

MORE SOAP HISTORY • The manufacture of soap actually predates Mount Sapo by some number of centuries. A recipe for soapmaking was discovered on

Sumerian clay tablets dating back to 2500 B.C. And during excavations of ancient Babylon, archaeologi uncovered clay cylinders containing a soap-like substance which were around 5,000 years old. A complete soap factory was found in the ruins of Pom which was destroyed by the explosion of Mount Ves in A.D. 79.

• Soapmaking did not become an established busin until about the 7th century, in Spain and Italy. Howe soap remained an expensive luxury item because it was difficult to manufacture. Soap was often so hea taxed that it was beyond the budgets of most people. Bathing was out of fashion for many centuries, being considered sinful. When Louis Pasteur proved that cleanliness cuts down on disease, bathing began to become an accepted practice and the use of soap began to rise.

• In 1837, a candle maker named William Pr teamed up with a soap maker named James Gamble. Procter and Gamble discovered ho produce soap in massive quantities and soon were also selling it in massive quantities. Finally, so and bathing - were common.

ADVANCES IN SOAP

• The science of soap continues to march forward. W animal fats were in short supply during World War I German scientists learned how to make soap using synthetic compounds and petroleum by-products. T are called detergents. Many soaps are made from vegetable oils such as cocoa butter or palm oil. The of Castile in Spain makes soap using olive oil.

• Soaps and detergents are widely used in industry. Soap prevents hot rubber tires from sticking to their molds. Motor oil contains detergents that break dow soot and dust particles, preventing them damaging engine. Soap polishes jewelry and softens leather. T Americans spend $2.2 billion on soaps and deterge annually, averaging 59.5 lbs. per person.

BEATING IT U

• Ivory soap was first inve in 1879 by Procter and Gamble. At that time, the was named White Soap a it sank in the bathtub water just like every other soa However, a worker one day went to lunch and forgo turn off the soap-mixing machine. When he returned found the vat of soap frothy and bubbling. Mr. Proct came to look over the situation, and decided the so had not been harmed. The soap was processed an sent out on the market.
