Got plastic?

H

ere comes the sun and does it ever feel good. I love spring and summer in western Canada. The flowers are blooming, the birds are singing and it is again shorts and flip flop season. As the weather has been steadily improving, my wife, daughter and I have been getting out to do our nature walks along a local stretch of beach trails that we frequent. On the last couple of trips, our daughter has commented on all the litter we encounter. She is quite upset at seeing discarded water bottles and plastic bags and other garbage only meters away from the provided trash cans, not to mention all the junk that washes up on the shore. She will often ask us why there is garbage on the ground where it does not belong. This is not a heavily trafficked area by any means. This is a quaint, small, out of the way municipal area that is visited by maybe only a few hundred people per week. It seems that everywhere we go in nature we see more and more disturbing evidence of those there before us. What happened to leaving only footprints? We have decided to take it upon ourselves to go down there once a week with a small garbage bag and to pick up the trash we come across in an effort to teach her to repair our environment. Our little one is acutely aware of her surroundings and when we saw how sad and confused she was when she learned that people would intentionally litter, we knew we had to give her the opportunity to take ownership of this. Now we are not planning on our daughter saving the world from its growing plastic and massive litter problem but we are happy to give her the opportunity to feel she is doing her part. Perhaps she will educate her school friends or lead by example. In any event she gets it and realizes the difference between what is right and what is obviously wrong. Now if a four year old can grasp the concept of respecting the environment and preventing the planet, as we know it, from being overrun by garbage you would think the adults of this world would catch on too? In this issue we have addressed the worlds growing issues with plastic use, plastic waste and the negative effects associated with this ongoing problem. It may be hard to imagine changing your lifestyle habits to accommodate the issues surrounding plastic but if you understand the potential perils associated with the negative aspects of plastic overwhelming our lives it definitely makes one think twice. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

Should you fight disease?

W

ith the increased prevalence of cancer, awareness of this disease has surpassed all others — but is that always positive? There are emerging concerns that go against popular culture’s perceptions of “fighting” the disease. One is that early detection of cancer isn’t always preferable. Some cancerous cells may simply stop growing or even heal on their own. We all have cancerous cells, and in fact, cancer and precancerous cells are so common that nearly everyone by middle or old age is riddled with them, according to a pathology report at the University of California. Most of us never show symptoms. The New York Times published an article based on a paper in The Journal of the American Medical Association of data from two decades of screening for breast and prostate cancer. It found that besides detecting tumours that would become deadly, there were many small tumours that were destined to stop growing, shrink, or even, at least with some breast cancers, disappear. The National Institute of Health’s Dr. Barnett Kramer stated in the article that the old view was that cancer is a linear process. A cell acquired a mutation and slowly acquired more and more mutations that don’t stop. But it’s becoming clear that cancers require more than mutations; they need the cooperation of surrounding cells and even the whole person, whose immune system or hormone levels, for example, can stop or advance a tumour. Therefore, more research should be done to help doctors decide which cancers need to be treated and which can be left alone, or at least can be given less aggressive treatment. High tech diagnostics for breast and prostate cancer have found huge numbers of early cancers without corresponding late stage cancers. (Researchers discovered that only 20 to 30 percent of small prostate tumours progressed.) In addition, testicular cancers and small kidney cancers have been known to stop growing, and precancerous cervical cells often disappear. As Dr. Martin Gleave at The Canadian Urologic Oncology Group commented, “With early detection, our net has become so fine that we’re pulling in small fish as well as big fish. Now we have to identify which small fish we can let go.” Another cancer concern is in its public perception and promotion. As Judy Segal stated in her recent Vancouver Sun article titled “Cancer isn’t the best thing that ever happened to me,” its new status as a route to self-improvement can be problematic. It undermines and even diverts our attention from the important fact that science still hasn’t found the causes and reasons why the growth rates are skyrocketing. It also inhibits attitudes of some cancer victims who don’t feel that it was a positive experience. Though many people have positive life-changing outcomes, the insistence on keeping optimistic, often with unwavering self-righteousness, can make others feel alienated and even ashamed that they’re scared, depressed and angry. Today’s typical mantra is that you should be courageous and fight; and learn about yourself from it if you survive. But your experience with cancer should be your experience with cancer. Segal states, “If you violate the code of optimism, or if cancer somehow failed to improve you, you’d better be quiet.” This avoidance of true feelings can’t be healthy, and neither can pink ribbons, marathons and advertising dollars spent marketing companies as caring cancer-research supporters if they end up glossing over a horrific plague.

Activity and Alkalinity For Bone Health By Brendan Brazier

T

here is a “silent thief ” that may be slowly stealing your bone health. Most of us have either already been affected or we’re not taking precautions to protect ourselves. Osteoporosis causes bone fragility and increased risk of fracture, and greatly reduces quality of life, but has virtually no symptoms. Over 2 million people in Canada suffer from this disease, and may already experience resulting loss of mobility, disfigurement and decreased independence. Osteoporosis, which occurs when bone mineral density drops to a lower-than-healthy level, has risk factors including family history and certain medical conditions. However, it is possible to prevent and even reverse bone density loss by paying attention to two main culprits: inactivity and poor nutrition.

Exercise

The first major contributing factor in rising osteoporosis rates is the widespread reduction in physical activity. Similar to muscles, bones can be maintained and rebuilt, and therefore remain strong, when exercised. However, if mostly dormant on a regular basis, bone density begins to diminish; the result of low bone density (combined with other factors) is usually osteoporo-

sis. Exercise places an increased load or force on bones because the tendons and ligaments that tie bones and muscles together push and pull against the bone to move it. Our bones respond by forming new bone, and remodeling existing bone to be stronger. Weight training is an excellent way to increase bone density, which could significantly reduce your chances of developing osteoporosis. Impact sports like running will build an even greater bone density in legs and hips. Consistent pounding on the road forces bones to adapt by increasing their density. One caution: if you don’t have a running background, and feel that your bones may be in a low-density state, begin by walking. Don’t increase running mileage or time spent running by more than 10 percent per week. This allows tendons, ligaments and cartilage around bones to adapt to the increased activity, which lowers chances of injury.

Eating

The second major impact on bone health is lack of proper nutrition because what you eat directly contributes to your body’s pH balance. If what you eat generates acidity, the body has to neutralize the blood — for survival your blood must always remain neutral despite unbalanced body pH. If the body is consistently fed acid-forming, denatured (processed, refined) foods and supplements, and encounters stress from outside sources, it takes measures to maintain a neutral blood pH. In doing so, the body pulls alkaline calcium from the bones and, over time, the bones will become weaker as a result of this survival mechanism. Stress and over-consumption of acid-forming foods cause most poor bone health, and eventual osteoporosis, not a lack of calcium as was once commonly believed. Refined foods are low in absorbable forms of calcium and extremely acidforming. Typical calcium supplements derived from oyster shells, bovine bone meal, coral and dolomite rock are extremely difficult and unnatural for the body to assimilate, making this method of boosting calcium stores inferior. A superior way to boost calcium is by eating plant-based, al-

kaline-forming foods that contain calcium like almonds, sesame seeds and green leafy vegetables.

Alkaline protein

Most protein sources (meat, fish, poultry, eggs and dairy) are highly acid-forming, yet the highly alkaline-forming foods (like most vegetables and fruits) are generally low in protein. There is a simple solution which I continue to reiterate in my quest for optimal nutrition from plant sources: observe protein quality. Raw, unrefined hemp protein, for example, measures at about 50 percent protein, yet is much less acidforming and more absorbable than isolated, denatured vegetarian proteins such as whey and soy. Hemp’s higher pH level can be attributed in part to chlorophyll content. Alfalfa and spirulina are also comprised of almost 65 percent protein and are highly alkalizing. Raw, sprouted rice and green peas are also excellent sources of alkalizing protein that your body can use efficiently. Other prime proteins are “pseudo” grains (technically seeds, but often referred to as grains) amaranth, buckwheat, quinoa and wild rice. Daily consumption of these will supply the body with the essential building blocks it needs for maintenance and repair, in addition to maintaining a healthy alkaline environment which directly contributes to bone health. Also, a diet high in leafy green vegetables will ensure the system remains alkaline even when stress is elevated. In The Thrive Diet, I have included 100 recipes that follow this principle. I’ve made these recipes for myself for years and believe they work exceptionally well; all are plant-based, wheat, gluten, soy and corn free. Combine these foods with physical activity to prevent osteoporosis now and in your future.

Putting the Brakes on Adrenal Fatigue By Carmen Mattes Muscle weakness Trembling Weight gain (particularly around the waistline) Difficulty losing weight despite genuine attempts Memory problems Lack of sex drive Poor recovery after exercising Hair loss Depression Anxiety

E

ver wonder what happens when your body becomes overwhelmed by stress? Adrenal fatigue, also known as hypoadrenia, is the result of chronic and ongoing stress. While it is normal to have some level of stress (a little – like the stress we feel as a result of exercise or preparing for a presentation – is even beneficial), too much can quickly become unhealthy. The body does not differentiate between the types of burdens and insults it must endure; it simply leaps into action, ready to respond to what it perceives is a threat. This puts tremendous pressure on the adrenal glands since they are continuously called upon to produce hormones necessary for daily health, and relied upon during times of stress.

When adrenals are attacked

These small but vital adrenal glands must undergo a rigorous process when triggered by a stressful event’s physiological reactions. First, adrenaline is released, blood pressure and cholesterol levels rise, heart rate increases, the blood supply is sent to your extremities, and digestion becomes impaired. Muscles become invigorated and strong, and your senses become more acute. When this stress response is triggered repeatedly, it eventually exhausts the body’s energy, depletes nutritional and hormone reserves, impairs digestion, weakens the immune system and ultimately wreaks havoc. Over a prolonged period, chronic nutritional deficiencies can occur, which in turn create stress in the body, causing the cycle to worsen. The sudden release of adrenaline also increases the metabolism of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates which causes the body to excrete amino acids (protein building blocks) and minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus and calcium. The body then has an impaired ability to digest any nutrients, thereby becoming nutritionally starved! Adrenal exhaustion has many symptoms, but some common ones are: Fatigue (no matter how much sleep you may have had) Hormonal imbalances such as PMS and menopausal syndrome Insomnia

12

|

The broad spectrum of symptoms and their slow, cumulative effects, which are not initially obvious, can easily result in misdiagnosis of adrenal fatigue. A person might say they haven’t felt the same since a certain event took place, or it might be a series of stressful situations that have all contributed to physical decline.

Supporting the adrenals

Since it is critical that our adrenals remain vital and healthy, there are natural ways to improve their functioning. One of the first places to begin the healing process is through correcting and enhancing the diet. Maca is a nutrient-packed superfood used for centuries, and its health benefits have been backed by scientific research. What puts this medicinal plant at the top of the list? Maca is an adaptogen, which is an herb that increases the body’s resistance to stress, disease, trauma, and fatigue. Adaptogens create homeostasis (the body’s ability to regulate and stabilize itself despite outside stressors) wherever there is an imbalance. Maca’s nutrients support adrenal gland recovery. They include: essential vitamins, minerals, and trace minerals, alkaloids used in allopathic medicines for healing, glucosinolates and indole-3-carbinol which are powerful anti-cancer compounds, sterols which promote lean muscle mass and burn fat, and saponins that demonstrate strong immune enhancing properties. Maca helps strengthen the entire endocrine (hormonal) system. It feeds and nourishes the HPA (hypothalamus, pituitary axis) which then has a direct and positive impact on the adrenals. Since all the glands are dependent on each other to function optimally, if one goes astray, then they all falter. The best approach when dealing with stress is a preventative and proactive one. Once adrenal fatigue has taken hold, it can take months, even years, to recover. If you think you have already been hit, the first step is to see your family doctor; the second is to be diligent and patient. Eat well; stay away from stimulants (sugar, coffee and alcohol); get plenty of rest; find ways to reduce and cope effectively with stress; and supplement with high quality maca — and you might see positive change sooner than you think. Carmen Mattes is a Master Herbalist who has used maca in her practice for over four years. She lives on Gabriola Island, BC with her husband and four young children. The entire family takes maca daily.

How Cleansing

Can Change Your Life By Gina Broccolo

C

leansing is an essential part of any truly effective weight loss programme. Research suggests that many of the chemicals we ingest daily through food, water and air can become deposited in fat cells in our bodies. A diet lacking in certain nutrients may also impair our natural ability to detoxify chemicals, which leads to their further build-up in the body. The cumulative load, called the “body burden,” is thought to lead to illness and has been linked to hormonal imbalance, impaired immune function, nutritional deficiency, and an inefficient metabolism. Symptoms of accumulation include indigestion, bad breath, fatigue, poor skin, and muscle pain. As intestinal waste accumulates, peristaltic action (which is a sequence of muscle contractions that progressively squeeze one small section of the digestive tract to the next to push food along the tract) becomes less effective, and transit of material passing through the intestinal tract slows down. This can contribute to constipation and weight gain. This buildup in the intestines can also interfere with nutrient absorption, which takes place in the small intestine. Resulting buildup of toxic waste and undigested substances may pass through the colon wall and enter the bloodstream and lymph, where they are carried throughout the body. This can result in fatigue, headaches, irritability, nervousness, depression and protruding of the abdomen due to bloating. Cleansing the entire intestinal tract is an important measure to enable efficient nutrient absorption into the bloodstream, and decrease waste toxins that enter the bloodstream. After a “detox diet,” people often report improved energy, clearer skin, regular bowel movements, improved digestion, and increased concentration and clarity.

Cleansing and your diet

Cleansing begins with a fibre-rich diet and plenty of water! The goal is to cleanse your body of the toxins and waste that have accumulated over the years, clogging your system. Remember that the basic purpose of eating is to get nutrients into the blood so that we can build new cells to replace the ones that are constantly dying. As important as it is to cleanse, it is just as important to rebuild new cells. Proper digestion is also vital: when food is not properly digested, nutrients are not released and it takes extra energy to remove undigested waste. Undigested food becomes fermented and decaying food gets held up in your stomach, which can cause gas, bloating and discomfort. Begin by adding to your diet an array of vegetables, which are high in water content and relatively easy to digest. The enzymes in vegetables help to digest the protein that you eat. The fibre in vegetables also helps to move non-fibre protein foods through the intestines. Fruit is a great detoxifier. It has the highest water content of all foods, and travels through the body very quickly. Besides the nutrients that fruit provide, the fibre acts like a scrub brush to help keep the intestinal wall clear.

How to Choose a Multivitamin By Dr. Serenity Aberdour

These days, many people are looking to multivitamins for extra nutritional support. Whether it’s the busy mom on the go, the executive burning the candle at both ends, or the senior who is looking to keep a spring in their step, people from all walks of life are turning to a daily multi‑ vitamin as a way to ensure they are meeting their nutritional needs.

B

ut with so many choices, it can be hard to wade through the facts (and the hype) to figure out which multi is right for you. To help guide your selection, here are a few tips: Iron: in general, extra iron is most important for children who are still developing, women who are still of child-bearing age and, in some cases, athletes. Men and post-menopausal women do not generally need extra iron in their multivitamins and too much iron can cause more harm than good. Calcium: due to the bulkiness of calcium compounds, large amounts cannot fit into a typical multi. Although it doesn’t do harm to have calcium in your multi, you will need to take an extra calcium supplement if you have been told to take high doses of calcium. This generally applies to perimenopausal women and others at increased risk of osteoporosis. Folic acid: if you are pregnant, or even thinking of becoming pregnant, folic acid supplementation is strongly recommended. Prenatal multivitamins generally have higher doses of folic acid (along with higher doses of iron and lower doses of vitamin A). Starting a prenatal multivitamin as soon as possible is recommended to help support a healthy pregnancy. B vitamins (B complex): although all multivitamins contain the B complex vitamins, not all of them provide therapeutic amounts of those nutrients. Opt for a multi that has at least 25 mil-

amounts of various herbal ingredients. In many cases, there is no therapeutic value in this. If there are herbal ingredients in your multi, ask yourself a) do I need this herb? and b) is there enough in there to make a difference? Most herbs require doses in the 100s of milligrams to be effective, so if there are 5 or 10 milligrams in your multi, it probably has no therapeutic value. Seniors: opt for an iron-free multi that includes higher amounts of some of the other nutrients that seniors tend to need more of such as magnesium, CoQ10, zinc, vitamin D and B12. Kids: for children under the age of 12 especially, choose a product that is formulated for children and avoid artificial flavours and sweeteners. Although this is not an exhaustive list of tips to guide your decision, it can help to reduce some of the confusion that can arise as you stare at a shelf full of multivitamins. If you are still unsure, or need more specific guidance, consider speaking with a naturopathic doctor or other knowledgeable natural healthcare provider in your area.

Peaceful Nights & Pain Free Days Every mother wants to ease her baby’s pain quickly. Hyland’s provides natural treatment for teething pain: quick-dissolving Teething Tablets and mess-free Teething Gel. Gentle on even the youngest baby’s system, quick and effective on cutting pain. Mothers have trusted us for more than 80 years to relieve teething pain naturally.

omeopathy has been used to relieve the achy, overused and injured muscles and joints experienced after outdoor activities for hundreds of years. Arnica montana, in particular, is the number one homeopathic medicine used to help reduce swelling and bruising, to promote healing and ease pain from injury, and is also used to prevent sore muscles after intense training. Trainers, coaches and sports medicine practitioners continue to promote arnica’s benefits, and advise that it should be in the gym bag of every athlete. “Arnica is the most renowned trauma remedy, and is without equal as the primary remedy for injury of any kind whatsoever,” says Asa Hershoff, ND, DC, in the book Homeopathy for Musculoskeletal Healing. Even medical doctors rely on homeopathy’s natural therapeutic properties, often over pharmaceutical medications. In his article “Homeopathy and Sports Medicine,” A. Dwight Smith, MD, claims “With a minimum amount of homeopathic instruction, most trainers, coaches, and athletes themselves can successfully treat and cure many of the most common athletic injuries. Their willingness to do so will have two results: quicker and more comfortable healing for the athlete; and thousands of dollars saved for the athletic club.” (American Homeopathy vol.1, No. 6, June 1984) Regarding arnica, Edward Shalts, MD, DHt., states, “Arnica montana is the most important remedy

to have for trauma… Arnica is amazing!” (The American Institute of Homeopathy Handbook for Parents.) Keep arnica in your first aid kit for bruising, swelling and soreness associated with: accidents and injuries black eyes muscle sprains swollen or sore joints back strain bone fracture wounds with swelling surgery dental procedures overexertion

How does arnica work?

“Arnica promotes healing, controls bleeding, reduces swelling and prevents pus forming, and is therefore an essential ingredient of your firstaid kit. It is the first remedy to think of after an accident,” according to homeopathic physician Miranda Castro, FSHom. (The Complete Ho‑ meopathy Handbook) In his book, Homeopathic Treatment of Sports Injuries, Dr. Lyle Morgan explains, “Arnica works quickly to repair damaged blood vessels, to reduce swelling at the site of the injury, and to eliminate pain…,” and he adds, “Arnica should be considered first in all cases of physical injury.” Arnica is available in topical gels and creams that can be applied to the skin and in pellets that dissolve under the tongue. For minor, local complaints, the topical form is recommended. For more severe general symptoms, the pellet form is more effective. In diluted homeopathic preparations, it is absolutely safe, with no side effects or conflicts with other treatments or medications. (Arnica is very potent and can be toxic if not diluted when taken internally.) Arnica will not interfere with athlete drug testing or other medications, and thus athletes are becoming loyal and grateful proponents of arnica. Though arnica is as effective as medications for physical trauma, it is a completely natural botanical remedy. It’s an herbal species that grows between rocks and in meadows in harsh mountain climates in Europe, Siberia, and North America, and has been used as a folk medicine since the 16th century. It has earned many different names depending on its country of origin, yet it’s most descriptive moniker is probably “tumbler’s cure all,” reflecting its common medicinal uses.

Cheating on Your Diet By Cory Holly

M

any nutrition experts actually promote a lifestyle of dietary cheating as a means of release, provided it is controlled, planned and monitored. Others say not to get hung up on the rights and wrongs of nutrition, that food is just fuel for the fire, and that ultimately, it’s just not that important. I couldn’t disagree more. Some say that striving for perfection creates guilt when we fail, and that such guilt is what leads to bingeing and eating all kinds of harmful food. Dieticians are stuck on calorie counting. They say that we can eat anything, that nothing is forbidden, and that it’s just a matter of calories in and calories out. Poppycock! Calorie counting in the absence of counting food quality first is a lost cause. Is it okay to cheat on ourselves? Is the concept of cheating relative or absolute? Is cheating a matter of type or degree? To “cheat” means to defraud, mislead, swindle, deceive or violate a set of rules. What do you think about cheating on your diet? Should you go straight during the week and cheat on the weekends, every day? Not at all? What does cheating accomplish? Some experts recommend cheating to compensate for our natural tendency to break the rules, like a means of releasing steam to prevent the lid from blowing off. But why is steam building up? What’s causing the pressure? Do we have to “sin” to keep pace with everyone else? Many of us use food to pacify emotions including boredom, depression or loneliness. Others simply give into temptation or think of food as nothing more than a source of pleasure. Does cheating lead you astray or protect you from doing something worse? Does cheating make you stronger or weaker? If cheating in school is discouraged by teachers and the public education system, and generally not encouraged by parents, why then is cheating on your diet acceptable?

Could you explain to your daughter why she shouldn’t cheat on a school exam? What would you say to your teenage son who wants to take steroids? The adage Cheaters Never Prosper can be explained like this, “If you cheat people, they will not continue to do business with you, and so your business will fail.” Is it permissible to break the law for personal gain? We are judged by how we judge others. Are the principles we teach or enforce worth living by? Do as I say, not as I do? In the documentary Bigger Faster Stronger, director Christopher Bell tells the story about himself and his two brothers who grew up idolizing their muscular heroes Hulk Hogan, Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger only to discover that all were members of a steroid sub-culture that broke the rules. Bell’s message is clear. In a world preoccupied with being the biggest, strongest and fastest, you will never win in sport, business or war if you don’t cheat. Cheating anytime anywhere seldom brings us closer to the enlightened path of health and wellness. Is it less harmful to eat something detrimental if no one is looking? If we know it’s wrong, and do it anyway, perhaps the best advice is to listen to reason. But where is reason when we need it most? In the human model, reason seldom wins over emotion. TV’s Cheaters is a reality show that videotapes spouses and lovers caught live in the act of infidelity using surveillance cameras. At Cheaters.com you’ll find a webpage dedicated to explaining exactly what infidelity is. After reviewing 25 studies of infidelity, renowned psychologist and marital researcher Shirley Glass, author of several books on the subject, estimates that “25 percent of wives and 44 percent of husbands have committed infidelity.” This does not include emotional affairs in which no sexual activity has taken place. Now let’s compare cheating on your diet to cheating on your husband or wife. Is it okay to cheat on your spouse once a week, or just

20

|

VISTA Magazine Issue 71

on the weekends? Let’s explore the downside of cheating in marriage and compare that to cheating on a diet. Cheating on your friend, partner or spouse puts both parties at risk for STDs, AIDS and of course for females, pregnancy. Cheating on your diet puts you at risk for infection, organ damage, heavy metal poisoning and physical degeneration. To underestimate the destructive power of refined food is a grave mistake, literally. Cheating on your spouse could have a longterm negative impact on your conscience. Cheating on your diet will have the same effect if you think eating junk food is wrong. To know what’s right and still do what’s wrong is like committing moral suicide. Ignorance is only bliss when it’s foolish to be wise. When you cheat on your partner, you lose the intimacy of monogamy. When you cross the line you can never go back. When you cheat on your diet, you lose the exclusive impact of eating for health. You dilute it. Is the pleasure worth the pain? When you cheat on your spouse, you run the risk of sexual addiction. Once we taste the forbidden fruit, it’s very difficult to stop; we want more of the same. We remember the best parts and forget the risks. The same is true with junk food. Once the line is crossed, the risk of wanting more increases exponentially with thought. Does anyone understand the risk and biological consequences of eating refined food? Not likely. Refined food is now a North American staple. If we add prescription drugs to the mix and eliminate exercise, can we expect anything but disaster? The rules put forth in life are designed to protect us, not rob us of the joy of living. Is living free of pain and degenerative disease worth the cost of dietary sobriety? The original diet of mankind would be considered extreme by today’s standards. Refined food didn’t exist for most of human existence, when everyone everywhere ate nothing but

whole, natural, real food. Each one of us can be enticed and baited by our own lust and passion. It’s not really about food. The junk is only an effect of a much deeper cause. When our desire for immediate gratification is conceived, it’s next to impossible not to fulfill it. Why? Because such fulfillment is usually driven by powerful emotions and/or a physical state of inner chaos and blood sugar instability. The next time you look at anything with lust in your eyes, think of the downside. That’s what I do with junk food. I think of the risks and damage first, and then I think of how much I love my health food and how good it is for me. That’s how I nip any temptation in the bud. Right away. Immediately. I put the negative desire to death before I let my mind wander and persuade myself to follow my dark side. The dark side will always try to lure you in with thoughts that feed your sense of pride, pleasure and desire. So let’s be careful out there. The reason the dark side is dark is because it can lead to our destruction by our own hand. The upside of whole food is that it heals, regenerates and restores. Let’s focus on that. Calcium Counts By Sophia Stewart

When you’re young, your bones grow in size and density, fueled in part by calcium. When you stop growing, your bones continue to be‑ come more dense until about age 30. After that, bone mass and density remains relatively unchanged for several years or bone loss be‑ gins to occur at the rate of about 1 percent a year, depending on factors including lifestyle.

A

s you age, warding off this depleted bone becomes more difficult. That’s why making sure you get enough calcium is crucial. But most of us don’t get enough from food sources – such as from canned salmon with bones, sesame seeds, almonds and dark green leafy vegetables – so it’s smart to make up the difference with a supplement. The recommended daily intake for adult men and women (not pregnant) is at least 1,000 milligrams including food sources and supplements, but that amount must be absorbed by the body. Studies show that not all calcium supplements are equal. There are two major forms of calcium sold: carbonate and citrate. Calcium carbonate (chalk) is highly insoluble in the intestine; therefore, the percentage available for absorption is very low. Less than 30 percent of your calcium carbonate supplement is absorbed. Though it is popularly believed that calcium citrate, which is soluble, is easier to digest, some studies have shown that citrate has little to no difference in absorption, and therefore use by the body, than cheaper carbonate. (One study finding the absorption rate to be the same was in Journal of the American College of Nutrition, June 2001, by Heaney RP, Dowell MS, Bierman J, Hale CA, Bendich A “Absorbability and cost effectiveness in calcium supplementation.”) Bone formulas consisting of a blend of highly absorbable calcium,

22

|

along with all of the trace elements that are naturally present in the source, are also available in health stores. However you have to check the ingredient labels to truly ensure that what you’re taking is actually doing you good. For example, a form of calcium called acetate extracted from fresh water pearl oysters, and naturally occurring minerals (fortified with magnesium, zinc and vitamin D) has been shown to be 18,000 times more soluble than calcium carbonate and 100 times more soluble than calcium citrate. It was also found to significantly reduce the rate of bone loss in studies because the calcium retained in the body was more insignificant than the other two sources. When choosing a supplement, avoid those derived from unrefined bone meal or dolomite, not only because they are difficult to absorb and but they also may contain elevated levels of lead. If you take extra doses of those types that are difficult to absorb – in hopes of retaining the amount you need – too much calcium may increase your risk for kidney stones and heart problems, and impede absorption of other important nutrients such as zinc, iron and magnesium. Research has shown that calcium alone is not efficient in promoting bone health. Elements such as magnesium and zinc are important to maximize the effects of calcium and minimize its side effects. Magnesium is very important because it influences the bone matrix (structure) and mineral metabolism in bone. It is also essential for the conversion of vitamin D to its biologically active form. Zinc is vital for normal bone formation and bone metabolism and is a co-factor (helper) for specific enzymes to function properly. It’s also involved in the biochemical activities of vitamin D. Vitamin D has two major functions: to increase calcium absorption and maintain bone health. To get the most out of your calcium supplement, it’s best to take it in divided doses with meals to improve absorption. If you take iron supplements, do not take your calcium and iron pills at the same time because they compete for absorption. Remember that taking a high quality supplement with calcium, magnesium, zinc and vitamin D is important for normal development and maintenance of healthy bones and teeth, and helps to prevent calcium deficiency. And as part of a healthy diet, along with physical activity, it also helps to prevent bone loss and osteoporosis, especially in peri- and postmenopausal women.

Survive or Thrive? That is The Question By Jason Watkin Part I - Understanding stress

What seems to be the problem? Why do we suffer? How can we be happy and well despite facing constant change? Is unease or stress the fundamental cause of disease and accelerated aging? We all share the basic wish to be happy and avoid suffering. To realize this state of ease and enable us to thrive, it is helpful first to understand the causes of suffering. Unease and stress are processes that require unraveling. The stress reaction appears to improve survival capabilities during life-threatening situations. According to science, sensory stimuli perceived as distressing initiate a nervous reaction; subsequently the adrenals release stress hormones. Stress hormones coordinate systems necessary to fight or flee a situation deemed hostile. The stress reaction accentuates the perception of “me versus another,” presumably increasing the likelihood of survival.

What causes all of this worry and irritation? Focusing on hope and fear initiate stress. Uncertainty looms and we struggle to feel at ease with who we are in this moment. We search outside ourselves in hopes of finding lasting happiness. We hope for gain, pleasure, praise and fame. We fear loss, pain, blame and shame. We worry about losing what we desire and gaining what we dislike. We use words like “should” or “if only” and feel unworthy. We fixate on problems instead of solutions. We fear what change may bring and this can consume us; therefore, we choose beliefs and perceptions corresponding to those fears, adhering to them in an everchanging environment. Anyone confirming our viewpoint helps us defend our stance and others contradicting our viewpoint we condemn.

Stress alters the functioning of our entire body. Extra energy required to fight or flee, provided by increased blood glucose, exhilarates us. The blood clots more quickly, which swiftly stops bleeding from lacerations that occur while fighting or running. Increased lung expansion and cardiac (heart) output provide copious oxygenated blood to the skeletal muscles, experienced as a pounding expansion of the chest and overall muscle tension. Muscles surrounding blood vessels contract, which increases blood pressure. Senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch heighten, enhancing threat discernment. It is as if we are sitting on the edge of our seats while viewing a scary movie. The perception of increased strength, energy, and heightened senses overwhelm our mind. We can see how this reaction could be addicting to someone with low energy or depression.

The hammock

Win or lose?

Stress compromises systems considered unessential to fight or flight. Stress-related deficiencies include a weakened capacity to heal, to digest food, to protect against infection and disease, to detoxify, to maintain energy reserves, and to preserve healthy skin and mucosal barriers that normally keep germs and large particles out of the bloodstream. The ability to reason and flow with altruistic thoughts are also casualties when the stress response, primarily focused on self-survival, activates. Short-lived, infrequent and with physical exertion, the stress reaction does not appear to induce much long-term damage. However, prolonged, frequent and without physical exertion, stress becomes chronic unease, disease, and accelerated aging.

Hope and fear

When our situation is not life threatening, what stresses us? The fight or flight response is associated with aggression and fear. Hostile activities such as yelling, verbal insults and fighting stem from lack of understanding, attachment, aversion (dislike) and irritation. Aversion and irritation are similar to small flames which, when stoked, can lead to a roaring fire of hostile speech and actions. The sprouts of full-blown fear are anxiety and worry. Irritation and worry constitute a state of stress. If you feel irritated or worried often, better do some jumping jacks to release some of that energy!

Where do we seek relief? To provide distraction from irritation, worry, hope and fear dancing within our minds, we resort to things like caffeine, meat, sugar, alcohol, cigarettes, addictive foods and sex. Signs of stress remain as tension in our faces, voices and postures. Sleep is often the only recourse and oh, how difficult sleep can be while our minds have been whirling all day! What convoluted mental webs we spin. How we react to the impermanent moments of life determines whether we will thrive or merely survive. Simply put, stress is a state of unease due to fighting or fearing change. Take a moment to ponder this, and consider the last time you felt totally at ease and free from irritation and worry. It is easy to supply reasons why we believe our irritation and worry are justifiable, but this doesn’t often bring ease and happiness. When distressed, our body breaks down. With the awareness that clinging to irritation and worry is stress, we can choose to cling and create a stress-filled drama from feelings and thoughts or to let go and find ease.

Focus becomes perception

”That upon which we choose to focus determines our perspective.” Dhammapada. Is there an end to stress? To each moment, we bring many preconceptions and beliefs that cloud our understanding and unease results. Imagine a life where we strive simply to do our best, free from nagging hopes and fears. Listen to Your Gut: Digestion By John Austen

M

ark Twain once said, “Part of the secret of success in life is to eat what you like and let the food fight it out inside.” But the secret of success is actually to eat whatever you like and not have the food duke it out. That takes good digestion. Whether you suffer from gas, bloating, food sensitivities, constipation, acid reflux, irritable bowel or weight gain, food isn’t the problem. The real problem is what happens to that food after it enters your digestive system. Beyond medications, there are natural, simple ways to reduce intestinal troubles. In healing your digestive tract, you will not only lose unwanted weight and these uncomfortable symptoms, you will increase your energy and overall wellness. The gastrointestinal system is your inner body’s connection to the outside world and, besides digestion, is an important physical and immune barrier. Prolonged poor digestion may impair your

26

intestine’s ability to absorb nutrients from food, fight foreign bacteria, and move waste into the colon. Common signs of this serious problem include: headaches, backaches, fatigue, bad breath, body odour, irritability, confusion, constipation, skin problems, gas, bloating, diarrhea, and sciatic pain. Prevent or alleviate these problems now by cleansing your system of debris. Detoxification targets toxic buildup, breaking it up and flushing it from the colon. The colon’s major functions are to eliminate waste and to conserve water. Waste from food, impacted feces, dead cells, mucous, parasites, harmful bacteria and worms all pose eventual health problems if your plumbing “backs up” because these poisons can enter and circulate in the blood stream. The colon is susceptible to a continual buildup of toxic material found in pasteurized milk, white flour, sugar, and packaged foods lacking healthy fibre but containing toxic chemicals. This slow accumulation causes a hardened, impacted crust to form within the colon that lowers metabolism. Many practitioners believe that everything from diabetes to cancer is caused by an impacted colon. Toxicity is not limited to the colon. Toxins are also found in fat tissue, joints, arteries, muscles and liver, but the liver, kidneys, skin and lungs also serve to eliminate toxins. The liver is responsible for neutralizing and removing harmful substances from the blood. A sluggish liver, overloaded with toxins, can lead to fatigue, weight gain, water retention and arterial plaque. Detoxification can also enable proper liver functioning. A healthy liver will increase energy, improve metabolism, and help you to burn fat. Like the colon and liver, your kidneys are vital to daily health. If they don’t function properly, your body becomes weak and vulnerable to disease. Kidneys eliminate toxins, regulate blood pressure, help the urinary system, and filter blood of toxins by producing urine. To maintain healthy kidneys, flush them with a detox product on a regular basis. Though there are many detox/cleansing tonics and kits available, many only target one organ or use harsh ingredients that can damage the delicate balance of the intestinal tract. Choose herbal products that restore the body’s health in a gentle but effective way. The best herbs for liver, kidney and colon detoxification include milk thistle, blessed thistle, persimmon leaves, malva leaves and marshmallow leaves. Blessed thistle increases gastric juices, relieving indigestion and headaches associated with liver congestion, and stimulate bile flow, aid digestion and cleanse the liver. Persimmon leaves have general health benefits and are also used for constipation, hypertension, and weight loss (since it increases the amount of fats removed from the body as feces). Marshmallow leaves are used to treat inflammation and digestive tract ulcers, and relieve irritation of the mucous membranes of the mouth, throat and gastrointestinal tract. Malva leaves help soothe the digestive system, and as a diuretic, are sometimes used to treat gastroenteritis and stomachache in addition to detoxification. One out of three surgeries in North America is due to a digestion problem and the majority develop over a long period. Don’t let a digestion problem get worse simply by avoiding it, or thinking it’s “normal.” Listen to your body’s cries for help.

Hemp:

Premier Plant-Based Protein By Don Gauvreau

The ultimate smoothie Great for breakfast, workouts or an afternoon snack 1 cup milk/water/juice 1/4 to 1/2 cup unsweetened yogurt 1/4 to 1/2 cup organic frozen berries 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon organic 3.6.9 oil blend 1 serving (2 to 3 Tbsp.) organic hemp protein 1 scoop organic natural greens powder *Place all ingredients in the blender and blend until completely mixed

P

rotein is completely fundamental to life and proper amounts are needed on a daily basis to support optimal health. Unfortunately, many people avoid certain protein-rich foods due to intolerances, allergies, digestion difficulties and other health-related reasons. Hemp, for example, is one of the best sources of protein available, yet there is still a lot of confusion about this powerful health-promoting plant. Hemp protein is derived from the hemp seed and provides an incredible source of protein and several other key nutrients that are needed for optimal human nutrition.

Why choose hemp?

Hemp protein is an excellent source of complete protein, especially for vegans and vegetarians. It provides a high level of essential amino acids and branched-chain amino acids, meaning all of the building blocks that make up whole protein. Since much of hemp’s protein resembles that found in the human body, it’s very easily digested and assimilated. In fact, hemp protein is one

of the least allergenic of all protein sources and, therefore, is an excellent option for those who are allergic or sensitive to other protein sources. Hemp protein is high in fibre and essential fatty acids (EFAs), and is an excellent source of many vitamins and minerals. Research also shows that hemp can help boost your immune system, lower cholesterol and blood pressure, and even support weight loss.

Taste, texture and colour

A lot of people who haven’t tried it assume that hemp protein isn’t the most pleasant tasting source of protein, but this is a complete misconception. In fact, hemp protein is quite tasty and has a natural nutty flavour. When eaten whole, the seeds are pale green and cream coloured. When in powder form, hemp protein is brownish-green and its texture, which is rather smooth, makes it the perfect addition to a healthy smoothie drink.

28

|

VISTA Magazine Issue 71

How is hemp protein made?

Hemp protein powder is produced when whole hemp seeds are cold pressed to expel (remove) the oil. The hemp is then milled at low temperatures to produce a concentrated form of protein. Additionally, high quality hemp protein powders are derived from a cold press milling process that does not use solvents, hexane or any other chemicals.

How to use hemp protein

Hemp protein can be readily incorporated into your daily diet. It can be used as a substitute ingredient in many different hot or cold recipes (best added after cooking the other ingredients so as not to heat it to high temperatures) and also mixes easily with water, juice or other beverages. Many people add 2 to 3 tablespoons of hemp protein to their smoothies in order to reap the health benefits.

When to use hemp protein

Hemp protein can be used anytime throughout the day to help you meet daily protein requirements. For those who exercise, it’s advantageous to take in hemp protein immediately after a workout because it can help improve muscle recovery and tissue repair. When hemp protein is mixed into a drink, it makes for a healthy snack between meals, which is especially beneficial to people who are looking to maintain or lose weight. Your body needs adequate amounts of protein to sustain optimal health. Hemp protein is one of the healthiest and least allergenic of all protein sources, which makes it suitable for all body types and ages. Try incorporating hemp protein into your daily diet and you’ll surely notice a significant improvement in your overall health and well being!

CBC’s Wendy Mesley: Uncovering the Truth By Carol Crenna

W

endy Mesley is the no-nonsense host of Marketplace, CBC’s prime-time investigative consumer show, and regular contributor to The National. She’s won several awards, including three Geminis, for her skills in investigative journalism, which were never more evident than in the startling findings she revealed in her documentary Chasing the Cancer Answer completed in the midst of her own breast cancer treatments. VISTA spoke to Wendy about cancer prevention and her health.

VISTA: In your work to bring fairness to the marketplace, what are you especially proud of? Wendy: What drives me are not necessarily stories that shut down companies – though we hear that happens a few times a year due to the show’s influence – but the “grey” issues. Only CBC allows journalists to spend time researching a story that doesn’t have an obvious villain! For example, I produced a programme about the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer. It’s responsible for revealing what ingredients have been found to be carcinogenic or to cause cancer and for providing that information to governments worldwide. We exposed that even the WHO, with its highly trusted and respected scientists, receives a lot of funding directly from the industries that it is supposed to scrutinize. People assumed that science is “pure.” We didn’t catch anyone with a bleeding dagger in their hand, yet it made people look at the issue differently. I like telling stories that are complicated. VISTA: Is it difficult to wade through the information and issues? Wendy: Yes. Some stories take months or years to develop, not only to get the facts but to find a new angle and better strategy to tell it, even if it takes planting hidden cameras to reveal the perpetrator. VISTA: Why did you make the Chasing the Cancer Answer documentary? Wendy: After I was diagnosed, I quickly moved from the “why me” to the “why not me” phase after the fundraising director at Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation told me that cancer had just surpassed heart disease as the number one killer. He said statistics now reveal that almost one in two people born today will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. I was shocked, and wondered why this hadn’t made headlines. The stats don’t mean that everyone diagnosed will die of it, and I’m grateful for the funding and research spent on treatment to keep people like me alive, but unfortunately we look at cancer as a chronic disease now.

The untold story is that many cancers can be prevented because they’re caused by environmental factors – things we eat, drink and breathe. Why aren’t we doing more for prevention? It’s difficult to prove that the cause may be found by adding up the chemical culprits we’re exposed to daily; it’s easy to get products onto store shelves: it’s hard to get products off of store shelves. Europe and the US are much more proactive in both revealing information to the public, and reformulating products so that we can still have our hair dyes and cleansers, but without questionable ingredients. There are big issues, like breathing in benzene from car exhaust, that take big discussions and big decisions, and our society complacently discounts it with, “Doesn’t everything cause cancer?” and does nothing about it. VISTA: What do you think may have caused your cancer? Wendy: I considered that I’ve been using the birth control pill for decades, and estrogen is recognized as a class one carcinogen. It’s proven that if you’re on the pill for over eight years, you increase your risk of breast cancer. We’re not told this, and then taken off of it; instead, it’s now being promoted for use to girls who aren’t even having sex yet, to regulate their periods. I also discovered that the amount of alcohol that I drink, a glass of wine per day, also increases risk of breast cancer by approximately 30 percent. You don’t read that on wine bottles! VISTA: There’s so much to consider — even unhealthy electromagnetic frequencies in cell phones. Wendy: I’ve been telling that story for 15 years and I still don’t know whether they cause cancer or other illness, but I know that the science and politics around the issue are fascinating! VISTA: How do we weed through the misinformation? Wendy: There is no easy answer. Just a few years ago the Canadian government still hadn’t made ingredient lists on personal care and cleaning products mandatory. Now products list them, but you have to be a chemist to know which ones may be problematic unless you spend hours researching each one. My tip: the shorter the list of ingredients, the less likely you are to expose yourself to something questionable, whether it be in food or a cleanser. And if you don’t know what it is when reading it, reconsider ingesting or breathing it. That said, life is to be lived, so pick your poison! Like dieting, choose those few things in moderation that you can’t live without. VISTA: Do you have a healthy lifestyle? Wendy: Stress is a really good way to keep weight off! In theory, I’m a big believer in exercise but it’s difficult to find time. Real runners laugh at me because I call myself a runner but only run for 25 minutes once or twice a week, and I go to the gym twice a month. The rest of the time I keep fit by running around like a crazy person for work. I love windsurfing, but it’s so dependent on windy weather that it can be frustrating, especially on Lake Ontario. My husband is a health-conscious cook, thank goodness, or we would be poisoned by my cooking. We limit meat, and eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, as much local and in-season as possible. VISTA: Being in the public eye, do you try to show others that you live a healthy lifestyle after having cancer? Wendy: No. I’m not trying to make an example of myself. I have a life, and act inappropriately just as often as any other normal person does! VISTA: Did you grow up within a family concerned about health?

31

|

Wendy: My mother raised me on her own, and she is an outdoorsy, athletic person. At 78, she’s still a ski instructor, hikes often, and leads cycling tours. I don’t remember eating wholesome food like fresh vegetables because she worked full-time — it was whatever she could get on the table fast. VISTA: Has becoming a mother changed your thoughts about health? Wendy: Having kids sharpens the focus around health, but I know parents who are obsessed about never letting anything impure pass their children’s lips, and I want our daughter to have a normal childhood and enjoy some of the “forbidden fruits” of life. Ninety percent of the time she eats healthily. I changed my lifestyle when I had her in that I stopped being a workaholic who thought that I always had to say “yes,” and I take more holidays to be with her. VISTA: What made you decide to go public about your breast cancer? Wendy: I knew I wouldn’t be able to keep it a secret when my hair fell out from chemotherapy, and I also knew that carcinogens was a big news story, so though I’ve never felt comfortable involving myself in stories before, I thought this one might mean something to “the sisterhood.” I was surprised to learn how many women had breast cancer and how many were ashamed to talk about it. They felt that their employer would think they were less valuable, their husbands would think they were less attractive, or they had done something wrong and deserved to get it. Since I’ve got a supportive family and work situation, I was in a position to talk about it. VISTA: Was it difficult to give advice? Wendy: I got thousands of emails about it, and couldn’t respond to everyone, and at some point you don’t want to be considered “the cancer girl” forever, and want to move on. VISTA: You had two lumpectomies, chemotherapy, radiation and anticancer drugs. Did you do any complementary therapies? Wendy: No. I was told that complementary procedures can interfere with treatments so thought, “If I’m going to be putting conventional treatment poisons into my body, the last thing I want is to do something that doesn’t allow them to reach their full potential. VISTA: Have you considered all aspects that may have caused it such as emotional stress? Wendy: The reading I did seems to not consider stress to be a credible cause. There is speculation but no hard evidence. VISTA: Do you consider your job stressful? Wendy: There is a lot of stress in broadcasting but I love what I do, so most of it is good stress, and if I didn’t have it, I would be bored and unemployed. I can’t imagine living without stress; having a deadline keeps me productive, and being a little hyper, I like to have 25 things going at the same time. VISTA: Has the cancer experience changed your outlook? Wendy: No. People said having cancer would change me: I would slow down, never fight with my husband again, never yell at my child again… but you don’t get a personality transplant with the surgery. You are who you are. It may have been different if I’d thought I was going to die, but I’ve decided that I’m going to live until there is further evidence to the contrary.

Protect Yourself Against Osteoporosis By Lorenda Stefan

O

steoporosis is second only to cardiovascular disease as a leading health care problem, according to the World Health Organization. In Canada, more women die each year as a result of osteoporotic fractures than from breast and ovarian cancer combined. One in four women over the age of 50 has osteoporosis, as do one in eight men over the age of 50. The economic costs to the country are staggering: treating osteoporosis and the fractures it causes is currently estimated to cost $1.9 billion annually. The incidence of osteoporosis in North America has increased seven fold (700 percent) over the last few decades to epidemic proportions! Because osteoporosis is a silent disease, many of us don’t give a second thought to how healthy our bones are. The traditional dietary recommendations to prevent osteoporosis have focused almost exclusively on increasing calcium intake through the consumption of dairy foods. Campaigns like “Got Milk” use celebrity endorsements to increase the dairy industry’s influence over our food choices. Increasing calcium intake is not wrong in itself, but, in relation to bone health, calcium alone is not the answer. How does a cow (or any other mammal for that matter) have strong bones when they don’t consume milk after weaning? What can we do when there is so much confusion surrounding calcium? The alternative is to consume more plant-based, alkaline-forming foods. Many plant foods, particularly raw seeds, nuts and dark green leafy vegetables are excellent sources of essential bone enhancing nutrients including calcium. Eat foods that are both high in calcium and reduce calcium losses such as green leafy vegetables including kale and spring greens. Avoid foods that are high in calcium but increase calcium losses such as dairy products. Minimize foods that have calcium in lesser amounts but also increase calcium losses such as meat, fish and eggs. Increase foods that have calcium in lesser amounts but reduce calcium losses such as peppers, bananas and oranges. In addition to targeted calcium consumption, consider making the following changes: Make the shift from too much animal protein to more vegetable protein, particularly soy protein. Animal protein increases calcium losses by 25 milligrams per 100 grams of protein consumed, whereas soy protein has a positive effect on bone mineral density and bone mineral mass. Reduce salt intake. Every 5 grams of salt increases calcium losses by about 35 milligrams per day. Increase potassium and bicarbonate intake by eating more fresh fruit and vegetables. Reduce or eliminate coffee and other caffeinated drinks. Each cup of coffee reduces calcium balance by about 4 milligrams. Increase consumption of vitamin K-rich foods such as green leafy vegetables, broccoli and alfalfa sprouts. If you smoke, stop! The longer you smoke and the more cigarettes you consume increase your likelihood of osteoporosis. Avoid large amounts of alcohol (you’ll feel better in the morning). Regular consumption of just 2 to 3 ounces of alcohol every day increases the risk of osteoporosis. It interferes with the absorption and use of calcium and vitamin D and other bone nutrients. It also affects the production of hormones, which have a protective effect on bone. If you’re not exercising, start! Adding gentle weight-bearing exercise (walking, jogging, rebounding, and low-impact aerobics) to your daily

regimen will add years to your life and life to your years. To help identify your risk of osteoporosis (at any age), you can choose to have a non-invasive screening test done. The ultra-sound device used as part of the CaMOS research study (Canadian Multi-Centre Osteoporosis Study: www.camos.org) is the Sunlight Omnisense test, which uses ultrasound waves to assess information about bones: bone density, elasticity and thickness. The test is fast, comfortable, accurate, and most important, radiation-free. In addition to improving your lifestyle habits, it is important to consider proper supplementation. Most of our food is not as nutritious as it once was and, therefore, it is necessary in most instances to boost your nutrient intake. A bone enhancing formula containing calcium, magnesium, silica, boron, vitamin D and vitamin K should be taken on a regular basis to help prevent osteoporosis and promote strong, healthy bones. Help for Healthy Hair By John Austen

I

f you’re balding, keep positive — look at your head as half full of hair rather than half empty of hair! Though there have been hundreds of jokes about baldness, it isn’t humorous when you start to notice that your own crowning glory is disappearing. Called androgenic alopecia (AGA), male pattern baldness affects over half of men by age 50. If you want healthy hair, you may have to give it more than just a basic shampoo and conditioning. Like all other areas of your body, your hair needs specific vitamins and minerals. If certain nutrients are missing from your diet, dull, damaged hair or hair loss can result. Some natural shampoos and hair supplements have been shown to remedy the signs and symptoms of neglect, stress, malnutrition and effects of the environment.

What is a natural hair product?

Use of ingredients derived from plants is all that companies need to call products “natural.” Many manufacturers still add harmful petrochemicals such as sodium laurel or laureth sulfate. Look for formulas that don’t contain these ingredients and avoid artificial fragrance, colouring, transfats and animal products. The most used chemicals are preservatives; without them products only last a few weeks. Contact the company to see what the preservative is derived from.

Ingredients in your pantry?

Helpful ingredients include stimulating cayenne, nettle, ginger, fenugreek, aloe vera, and calming essential oils of peppermint, rosemary, sandalwood, wheat germ oil and horsetail. Stimulating ingredients work to increase blood flow to the small capillaries that feed hair roots, aiding growth and revitalizing your scalp. Precious oils and moisturizing agents protect the hair shaft while building volume, and can add manageability, shine and strength. Hair-specific supplements have been shown to be effective to reduce hair loss, too. Riboflavin (vitamin B2) deficiencies are associated with increased sebum (oil produced by hair follicles). Increased sebum production may result in weaker hair shafts. Vitamin B2 can help reduce sebum production and also supports proper cell growth. Niacinamide (vitamin B3) is important for proper blood flow to the scalp and the hair follicle and for metabolic activities in cells. Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) is particularly important for the health of the adrenal glands. Weak adrenal glands, leading to hormonal imbalances, may increase DHT levels. Pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6) may help with hair growth. Folic acid is vital for cellular activity and proper hair growth. Hormonal balance is also related to hair strength. Those who have decreased hair-shaft thickness or hair strength have been found to have higher-than-normal concentrations of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in hair follicles. Natural plant steroids are compounds that help eliminate extra cholesterol and hormones in the body. When excess cholesterol is eliminated, it has been shown that less DHT is made. Some plant sterols (steroids) may also work to block DHT from binding to receptor sites in hair follicles. Natural plant flavonoids are known to improve the health of blood vessels. This can lead to an improved supply of blood to all parts of the body, including the scalp. If you’re concerned about hair loss, reevaluate your diet. Add green vegetables, whole grains, essential fatty acids, and other foods rich in minerals such as zinc and selenium. For women, hormonal shifts (like perimenopause), medications (over 290 drugs cause or contribute to hair loss including antidepressants, blood-thinning agents, amphetamines, birth control pills, and hypertension drugs), stress, high doses of vitamin A, and illness are culprits. Even a severe flu can trigger it. Hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, iron deficiency, diabetes and cancer can also trigger hair loss.

Vitamin D:

Are You Getting Enough? By Jolie Root

A

s we leave the long dark days of winter, many people living in northern latitudes risk having insufficient vitamin D levels. There are numerous potential benefits of the sunshine vitamin but concerns over sun exposure have led to a regrettable epidemic of insufficient vitamin D levels in people across North America. Hardly a day goes by without a new study revealing one of the many benefits of vitamin D. While

36

|

our bodies do manufacture vitamin D on exposure to sunshine, the levels in some northern countries are too weak. Thus, during the winter months our body makes no vitamin D at all. Wearing sunscreen blocks much of the vitamin D that we derive from the sun in warmer months, so during spring and summer, dietary supplements are quite possibly the safest way to boost one’s level of vitamin D. Cutting-edge research soundly supports maintaining adequate levels. Look at this list of problems that have been associated with having insufficient intake of vitamin D. Deficiency of the sunshine vitamin may cause or worsen bone issues such as osteopenia and osteoporosis. Low levels are linked to both muscle weakness, risk of falls and bone fractures. It is fully understood that vitamin D is critical to the health of our bones and teeth. Vitamin D, together with other nutrients and hormones in our body, supports healthy bone renewal. Never forget that our bone health is dependent on a dynamic process of remodeling. Most people think of calcium when they think of strong bones, but vitamin D is also crucial. When vitamin D levels are deficient, the result is rickets in children and osteomalacia or osteoporosis, meaning soft or porous bones, in adults. We must have a serum level of at least 75nmol/litre to govern the process of bone remodeling. The health of our bones is only one of the benefits of getting adequate vitamin D. Low levels have also been linked to higher risk of common cancers, autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases and cardiovascular diseases. A Harvard School of Public Health study reported a link between vitamin D levels and the risk of heart attacks. A study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that a doubling of blood levels of vitamin D was associated with having half the risk of a heart attack (myocardial infarction). The vitamin has been linked to a broad range of cardiovascular benefits including a reduced risk of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and a reduced risk of stroke. Low vitamin D levels have even been linked to increased risk of dying, no matter what the cause. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) examined vitamin D status and found that those individuals who were in the lowest quartile of vitamin D status were 26 percent more likely to die. Although a consensus regarding the optimal level of serum 25(OH) D has not yet been established, most experts define vitamin D deficiency as a 25(OH)D level of < 50 nmol/litre and vitamin D insufficiency as 51 to 79nmol/litre. Studies to date show that the optimal concentration of 25(OH)D is at least 80nmol/litre. If testing your level isn’t convenient, maintaining adequate levels typically requires an intake of at least 1,000 to 2,000 IU of cholecalciferol or vitamin D3 daily.

Are You Getting Enough of the Sunshine Vitamin?

Recent studies have shown that many people do not receive enough vitamin D in their daily lives. Our bodies can make vitamin D3, but only when our skin is exposed to sunlight under the proper conditions. This production is dependent on the season, where we live and the time of day. Even using sunscreen drastically reduces the body’s production of vitamin D. Medical studies continue to show the importance of adequate vitamin D intake for good health. Carlson vitamin D soft gels are available in 400 IU and 1000 IU strengths. These easy-to-swallow soft gels are a great way to ensure that you and your loved ones receive the vitamin D you need.

Sports Nutrition for the Aging Athlete By Randy Betts

I

f you are a baby boomer, chances are that you have given up on any aspirations of becoming a high performance athlete. Even though your best athletic performances may be behind you, you could be robbing yourself of the joys and triumphs of ongoing athletic participation if you do not continue to nourish your body to support an active, sporting lifestyle. According to Wikipedia, sports nutrition is defined as “the study and practice of nutrition and diet as it relates to athletic performance. It is concerned with the type and quantity of fluid and food taken by an athlete, and deals with nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, supplements and organic substances such as carbohydrates, proteins and sugars.” Although sports nutrition is commonly associated with strength sports (such as weight lifting) or endurance sports (like running), proper nutrition to support active performance of any kind, particularly to support energy, mobility and recovery, becomes increasingly important as we age. Even if you are not a high performance athlete, applying the principles of sports nutrition is important to maintain active living, speed recovery from injury, enhance immunity and support overall good health. For the older adult involved in athletic activities, recovery from exertion may be one of the most important areas of focus especially given that nutrient metabolism and tissue regeneration decline with age. D-ribose is a nutrient that is gaining in popularity among athletes because of its role in protecting and restoring cardiac energy following exercise. Reductions in ATP, the body’s primary energy source, may be reduced during peak exercise and in some cases the body can struggle to keep up with demand during athletic activities. The pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) aids in replenishing depressed ATP levels; however, inefficiencies in this metabolic pathway can account for a sluggish recovery following activities that elevate your heart rate. Supplemental

ribose enters the PPP, bypassing certain steps to more easily produce energy. The most compelling evidence for the effectiveness of ribose in restoring energy to the heart after exercise has been demonstrated in those suffering from coronary artery disease. Another nutrient that should be a staple of any athletic recovery program is L-glutamine. Although it is not considered an essential amino acid because it can be manufactured by the body, glutamine demand can significantly exceed the body’s production capacity during strenuous ac-

tivities. One notable study showed a 45 percent drop in glutamine blood levels among athletes after an intensive sprint. When these same athletes switched to longer distance running over the course of following 10 days, their plasma glutamine dropped even further to 50 percent, with some still displaying depressed glutamine levels even six days after stopping both intensive and endurance activities. Overstressed muscles and a failure to adequately replenish L-glutamine

38

|

VISTA Magazine Issue 71

levels can slow recovery from injuries and affect the immune system, as L-glutamine influences white blood cell activity. Furthermore, L-glutamine can help reduce the degradation of joint tissues as it helps build glucosamine, and can also help balance pH levels to reduce the muscle pain following a strenuous work out. Mineral replenishment after exercise is an important consideration for the aging athlete. Acute, intense activity results in short-term losses of minerals and trace elements through sweat. Magnesium’s relationship to physical activity has received significant attention because magnesium is involved in numerous processes that affect muscle function including oxygen uptake, energy production, and electrolyte balance. Magnesium depletion after exercise may contribute to additional negative health effects because adequate magnesium is required for optimal immune function and to counter free radicals that are created when the body is under physical stress. Sustained, moderate physical training has been shown to decrease magnesium to levels that correlate with a reduction in circulating white blood cells. Research demonstrates that even minor deficiencies of magnesium and zinc, may compromise testosterone production, suppress the immune system, increase free radical damage, and impair muscle growth, function and energy production. Zinc supplementation may also reduce blood viscosity following exercise. Thickening of the blood reduces blood flow, affecting cardiac (heart) output and the supply of oxygen to the muscles. As you can see, there really is no need to compromise on your athletic endeavors as you age because there are a number of supplements that assist the body in recovering from exertion. Combining a sensible exercise programme with the right diet and supplements will not only nourish your body, but also help to sustain your active and healthy lifestyle long into your senior years. proper balance of essential fatty acid intake is important for regulating inflammation. The ideal omega-6 to omega-3 ratio is about 2:1. Unfortunately, most North American diets are closer to 20:1. Such excessive consumption of omega-6 and inadequate consumption of omega-3 creates a pro-inflammatory state in the body. Consuming omega-3 rich fish oil is an ideal way to address our rampant omega-3 deficiencies, but for optimal benefits, it’s important to choose a fish oil that has not been overly processed. For a fish oil supplement to realize its full health-promoting potential, it must be sourced from pure waters, minimally-processed without chemicals or extreme heat, and cold-pressed immediately after harvesting. By using only wild, sustainably caught Alaskan salmon – among the cleanest and purest fish stocks in the World – delivering purity through high-heat distillation is not required. Using an extra virgin, low-heat process, this oil delivers nature’s full array of 16 vital omega fatty acids and naturallyoccurring nutrients, including vitamin D and the antioxidant astaxanthin – all of which are typically lost during distillation. Clinical studies have already validated the effectiveness of this salmon oil for reducing inflammation and LDL cholesterol; improving energy, mood and memory; and supporting digestive and joint health. Best of all, it is sourced from 100 percent sustainably harvested Alaskan salmon, as certified by the Marine Stewardship Council, making it an ideal nutritional and ecological choice.

Whole Food for Prevention Clinical studies have already validated the effectiveness of this salmon oil for reducing inflammation and LDL cholesterol; improving energy, mood and memory; and supporting digestive and joint health. Powerful inflammation fighters are also found in the herbal kingdom. Turmeric is considered by some to be the most important herb for promoting and maintaining good health, in large part due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Known for its cardiovascular and cell-protective benefits, many studies have demonstrated turmeric’s ability to inhibit inflammatory enzymes called cyclooxygenase-2(COX-2) and 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX). For superior purity and potency, look for broad-spectrum “supercritical” extracts of turmeric, which deliver the anti-inflammatory benefits of the whole herb as opposed to just one isolated constituent like curcumin. Closely related to turmeric is the multi-tasking wonder herb ginger. A powerful anti-inflammatory, ginger supports healthy blood flow and cardiovascular function and liver, joint and gastrointestinal health. Rosemary, one of the most powerful herbal antioxidants, also contains numerous COX-2 inhibiting properties. Research demonstrates that supercritical extracts of rosemary exhibit potent anti-inflammatory and anti-tumour properties. The Chinese herb hu zhang is both anti-inflammatory and rich in resveratrol, the same anti-aging and cardioprotective polyphenol found in red wine. Holy basil is revered in ayurvedic medicine as a multi-tasking antiinflammatory that also helps to reduce cortisol and balance blood sugar. Other valuable inflammation-reducing herbs include baikal skullcap, Chinese goldthread, barberry, oregano and green tea. In addition to promoting a healthy inflammation response, many of these herbs have shown great promise in the fight against cancer. Herbal formulas often combine the aforementioned herbs, thereby delivering a vast array of anti-inflammatory plant compounds capable of reducing the effects of inflammatory enzymes including COX-2 and 5-LOX (which have been implicated in numerous cancers). These herbal formulations have been studied at several of the most renowned medical institutes in North America, yielding dramatic results in the process. Columbia University has already published the results of one study demonstrating the ability of a combination of these herbs to not only suppress the growth of cancer cells but also promote their self-destruction. Furthermore, the MD Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas found that one formula combining these botanicals was able to suppress cell and tissue inflammation. According to Robert A. Newman, PhD and Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology, “The combined anti-inflammation components in the selected herbal extracts may contribute to a broadbased modulation of factors involved in inflammation and related diseases such as atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, skin diseases such as eczema and psoriasis, and even cancer.” Many people think that only joints are affected by inflammation. The truth is that the body’s natural inflammatory response affects everyone and every major organ system, often “silently,” without being perceived. Given the link between inflammation and whole body health, a supplement strategy geared towards promoting a healthy inflammation response is as fundamental as a daily multivitamin. Mark Schneider graduated from the Institute of Holistic Nutrition in Toronto, and currently works as a certified nutritional practitioner (CNP) in the Greater Toronto Area.

Protein for Healthy Skin, Hair and Nails Have you ever wondered what the secret to healthy looking skin, strong nails and shiny, silky hair is? Why do some people seem to have it all, while others struggle to obtain what seems unobtainable? our hair, skin and nails are made mostly of protein (just like the rest of your body), so it only makes sense that high quality proteins will enhance these features. However, the major protein found in hair, skin (primarily in the protective outer layer) and nails is keratin, which is largely comprised of the amino acid (a building block of protein) called cysteine. Unfortunately, not all proteins contain high levels of this important amino acid. The cysteine found in keratin is in a disulfide (a linked pair of sulfur atoms) form, which creates extremely strong bonds. The more cysteine disulfides that are in keratin, the stronger the bonds are. For instance, nails contain a lot more of these disulfides than skin or hair. And if you’ve ever smelled burnt hair and wondered why it smells so strong, it’s because of the high sulfur content. One of the greatest sources of cysteine that can be found in its highly absorbable disulfide form is natural, unrefined whey protein isolate with high levels of alpha lactalbumin. Alpha lactalbumin is one of nature’s highest quality protein structures, which is why it is found in such high quantities in mother’s breast milk. The reason that not all whey proteins are the same (aside from some containing high levels of fat, casein and lactose) is because of the way they are processed and how much alpha lactalbumin they contain. Excess heat causes the delicate disulfide bonds in whey to break apart, rendering them rather ineffective. High levels of alpha

lactalbumin occurring in cold-processed, undenatured whey indicate higher levels of cysteine in its most bioavailable (easily absorbed and utilized) disulfide form. I don’t want to bog you down with all the biochemistry stuff; however, it is important for you to understand what to look for in a high quality whey protein. If beautiful, strong and lustrous skin, nails and hair are not your main concerns, then what about supplying your body with one of the most powerful biochemicals ever discovered? It turns out that the same sulfur-containing amino acids responsible for your looking your best are also responsible for your feeling your best because they also comprise the antioxidant powerhouse, glutathione. Glutathione is one of the most important biochemicals that your body can make. Aside from neutralizing dangerous free radicals that erode your body from the inside out (and are known causes of everything from aging to cancer), glutathione is essential to healthy immunity — so much so that early research showed that immunity itself can be controlled by healthy levels of glutathione. Glutathione also happens to be very important to your lean body mass, and if you are not aware of it, let me fill you in on a well accepted fact: muscle tissue to a large extent controls the overall rate of your metabolism! Studies indicate that when glutathione levels are low, the cells do not make high enough levels of your number one energy fuel, ATP and muscle wasting can

Having a Personal Energy Crisis? By Hyla Cass, MD

No wonder you’re tired. You’ve got a partner, kids, a career, and a second career as a chauf‑ feur for the kids. You plan the meals, do the grocery shopping, cook and supervise cleanup.

T

hen there’s the housework, the yard, the bills, the laundry — and it never stops. But there is a difference between having a busy life that’s exhausting and having no energy, and the difference could lie in the health of your thyroid gland. The small, bow-shaped thyroid gland converts iodine and tyrosine from food into thyroid hormones T3 and T4. These hormones are important for heart and bone health, and for the metabolism that turns food into energy. An imbalance of thyroid hormones can lead to health issues that may affect up to 20 percent of North American women. Consider low thyroid function as a possible cause if you experience

fatigue or sluggishness, hair or eyebrow loss, weight gain or coldness in your extremities. Ask your doctor for your thyroid numbers. Remember that the range of “normal” for thyroid is vast, so it can’t take into account personal requirements. Before rushing off to your doctor for a blood test, however, I suggest that you first determine your basal body temperature. Your body temperature reflects your metabolic rate, a rate that in turn is largely determined by thyroid hormone activity. The test is simple: all you need is a thermometer. Look for formulas in your local health food store that will support a healthy metabolism and may improve energy levels using a combination of the amino acid L-tyrosine to facilitate production of thyroid hormones; the herb ashwagandha to support thyroid function; and guggul extract to help convert T4 hormone to the more potent T3.

Taking your basal body temperature

1. Take your temperature first thing in the morning after you wake up. It’s important to measure your temperature after you have had adequate rest. 2. Before going to sleep, place a thermometer by your bed. Shake it down to below the 95.0 degree mark. 3. Immediately upon waking, place the thermometer in your armpit (for 10 minutes). Hold your elbow close to your side to keep the thermometer in place. 4. Read and record the temperature and date. 5. Repeat the test for at least three mornings (at the same time of day). 6. A reading between 97.6 and 98.2 degrees F is normal. Readings below 97.6 may indicate an abnormal condition. Note: Menstruating women must perform the test on the second, third and fourth days of menstruation. Men and postmenopausal women can perform the test at any time.

ut of 100 people, there’s a good chance that over 80 of them are chronically dehydrated. We simply don’t drink enough fluids to keep our bodies’ systems working properly, which can lead to everything from low energy and weight gain to organ malfunctions. Pure water is best to hydrate, but it only helps you if you drink it.

I’ll drink to that?

If you find water bland, you may stop drinking it before getting enough. Instead, many people turn to other beverages, such as sports and energy drinks, which don’t hydrate better, but may help you ingest larger volumes. These drinks could provide a great opportunity to increase not only your water intake, but a host of nutrients that many of us lack. Unfortunately,

the market is saturated with over-processed liquids containing high fructose corn syrup, salt, artificial sweeteners, chemical colours, and poorly absorbed, synthetic (coal tar-based) vitamins and minerals — ingredients that most people wouldn’t seek out for optimal health.

tanicals such as green tea and ginseng. In themselves, these are healthy (though green tea contains caffeine), but it’s the other ingredients that must be scrutinized.

Mix it up That doesn’t mean all energy drinks are bad. They can be a quick way to hydrate and refuel on the fly. Some may be helpful for athletes due to a readily absorbable form of carbohydrate that helps muscles during exercise and electrolytes to replenish those lost perspiring. But what specific electrolyte minerals are added, and are they in appropriate amounts for the human body, so as not to create an imbalance? Your body needs sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium and magnesium electrolytes, but often these drinks simply contain high levels of processed salt. Comparing ingredients of the two top-selling sport drinks, both are laden with sodium (100 to 110 milligrams), approximately four times as much as the potassium added. They contain almost no calcium, phosphorus or magnesium, yet magnesium is thought to be essential to refuel athletes. Neither contain any other minerals or vitamins. Both contain 15 grams of sugar per serving, so if you drink the bottle, this totals eight teaspoons of sugar. The type of carbohydrate is significant; processed simple sugars such as glucose, sucrose and fructose simply raise blood sugar and have no nutrients. Though one energy drink promotes its vitamin content, listing vitamin C, vitamin E and B vitamins, it also contains 32.5 grams of crystalline fructose sugar in one bottle — again, eight teaspoons full. (A can of CocaCola contains 39 grams of sugar.) It also has 125 calories. (A can of Coke has 140 calories.) Therefore, for the few nutrients of questionable quality you’re getting, you could potentially gain weight from the sugar. Other drinks are marketed as health-enhancing because they add bo-

Consider better alternatives. Though few energy drinks pass the health test, mineral-replenishing drink powders, sold in health food stores for a decade, are evolving into highly condensed forms of nutrition that are simply added to water. Not only do they contain all essential electrolytes, they provide an array of other minerals and vitamins while adding very little or no sugar. One concentrated powder offers 20 different bio-organic minerals (from a natural, edible source, so more easily absorbed than most) all in healthy ratio, such as a 3:1 ratio of potassium to sodium, completely opposite to the 1:4 ratio of potassium to sodium in sports drinks. It also provides a substantial amount of phosphorus, calcium, magnesium and iron. Some of these powders also introduce advanced forms of nutrients in nature-made fruits, berries, roots and leaves. What are being termed “superfoods” include Indian gooseberry, an antioxidant and “adaptogen” which increases the body’s resistance to stress; ashwagandha, an herb used to fight fatigue and free radicals; grapes, well known for their anti-aging resveratrol, and for several phytonutrients; goji berries, with antioxidants and carotenoids that prevent cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases; açai berries, rich in vitamins and antioxidants; and seabuckthorn, that has vitamin C levels 12 times higher than oranges (the best source on earth), and also contains polyphenols. Whether you’re an athlete or not, getting adequate fluids each hour is vital for circulation, respiration, converting food to energy, maintaining your body temperature, lubricating joints, protecting your spinal cord, and flushing out toxins. Choose them wisely to make every sip count!

Beautiful Skin

In Your 40s and Beyond By Shelly Lynn Nellis

eautiful skin doesn’t just happen when you are 40 or older. It is the result of a carefully planned attack on aging. There are different strategies that can be implemented at each stage of life. Let’s take a look:

INCLUDES: 1 Clean (200ml) 1 Hydra-Mist (240ml) 1 Lift Serum (30ml) 1 Firm Serum (30ml) 1 Eye/Upper Lip Cream (5ml) Regular Price: $174

40s If you haven’t started already, then now is the time to trim the toxins from your life. Unhealthy pre-packaged meals should be replaced with locally sourced fresh foods. Start a relationship with your local farmer’s market or CSA (community supported agriculture) to maintain a connection to your food and where it comes from. Vigorous exercise three times a week strengthens blood flow to your skin and brings essential nutrients to where they are needed most. All the sun-worshipping you did in your 20s may be making itself known. A chemical peel (look for ones with the most naturally sourced ingredients) can help minimize any sun damage that may have occurred. 50s You’ve really hit your groove in life now. However, you might want to try meditation as a way to drown out the constant demands on your time. Reducing stress is a key factor in sustaining great looking skin in your 50s and beyond. As you remove layers of stress, consider exfoliation to promote more youthful skin. Exfoliation helps to remove dead cells from the skin’s surface to reveal the glowing, younger looking skin underneath. 60s You may be retiring, but you’re no shrinking violet. Swimming is a fun way to exercise the entire body with low impact on the muscles and joints. Along with continued fitness, hydration is especially important. In your 60s your skin is reaching its driest stage. A quality moisturizer is indispensable at this age. 70s This may be the time to relax and enjoy the fruits of your labour, but it is no time to slacken your skin care routine. Supplements for bone and vascular health should already be a part of your regimen at this point. Remember to take them with filtered water because the chlorine in tap water can leach important nutrients from your body. Continued emotional health is also crucial to healthy skin. Consider merging your exercise and social life; staying active with friends is a surefire way to stay motivated and looking young. Remember, aging happens to us all. We don’t, however, have to just sit there and take it. Keeping fit, happy and radiant takes time and effort, but aren’t you worth it?

You run through an exhausting day filled with work, school, family, and traf‑ fic. At the end of it, you go to bed ready for a deep sleep. But what happens next?

S

uddenly you’re wide awake; you can’t turn off your brain! The events of the day and the commitments of tomorrow and beyond run through your mind like a movie. Not being able to sleep adds to your stress and you start the next morning less refreshed than you would like. This is a very common phenomenon — almost everyone has experienced it to some degree. And while the solution might be simply to relax the body and calm the mind, for many people this just isn’t possible. Many turn to prescription medications to soothe stress and anxiety, or medications to help them sleep. These can potentially be addictive, and have side effects such as drowsiness, which is great when you are falling asleep, but not very good the following morning. However, there are effective natural remedies which you can try, depending on the symptoms that prevent your falling asleep. First, analyze why you cannot fall asleep. Are you physically uncomfortable in your bed, with achiness or restlessness? Does your mind run on and on? Do you have hormonalrelated sleep disturbances? Stress and anxiety are the most common reasons most people have trouble sleeping. There are a lot of good, well-researched natural therapies which can be helpful for insomnia or other sleep problems which are due to these causes. Melissa, valerian, hops, St. John’s wort and passionflower are all herbs which are indicated for helping a person sleep. In particular, St. John’s wort and passionflower are both very good at relieving sleep disturbances caused by stress and anxiety and have been shown to be effective in clinical trials. Both herbs work at the level of the brain, to increase the neurotransmitters GABA and serotonin which are responsible for mood and feelings of anxiety. St. John’s wort also has a modifying effect on cortisol levels in the body: a low dose taken throughout the day can be very helpful for reducing the overall effects of stress. However, many people are fearful of taking St. John’s wort for sleeping due to unknown potential drug interactions or side effects. Passionflower is a very important herb when it comes to sleep. It has been known for centuries to be an excellent remedy to help with sleep disturbances, particularly in cases of stress and anxiety. Recent studies have shown that passionflower can reduce both chronic and acute anxiety, which supports its traditional use. While it is not a sedative (it does not make you drowsy), it helps you sleep

by turning off all the anxious thoughts which are running through your mind at bedtime. The mind can relax, which is then followed by the body, and as a result, sleep will follow. As one of the safest herbs, there are no concerns with side effects such as addiction or drowsiness. Take one tablet of passionflower before bed in cases of stress-related sleep problems. You can also take one tablet twice daily if you seek daytime relief while experiencing a lot of stress and anxiety. For those who simply cannot relax enough at night to fall asleep, passionflower provides an excellent solution for helping to turn off the brain and allowing you to drift off naturally, wake up refreshed, and be better prepared to tackle any stresses that the new day throws at you. Healing a Major Disease By Michelle Kwon

O

ur immune system is our greatest ally in healing cancer. Evidence shows that lifestyle changes and natural approaches to support the immune system can significantly decrease the risk of cancer recurrence and increase survival. A healthy whole foods diet, daily exercise, stress reduction techiques such as yoga, meditation and counselling, having a support group of friends and family, and cancer-specific natural treatments have shown, without a doubt, to aid in healing cancer. Although surgery plays a very important role in cancer treatment, it doesn’t address the underlying factors that predispose us to the disease and even prevent our healing. Cancer is not an alien being that has inhabited the body, but a growth of the body. It needs to be handled in a way that heals, rather than drastically trying to kill the invader at great expense to the rest of the body. Given the side effects and inconclusive results of chemotherapy and radiation, our best hope may be in therapies that enhance the body’s immune response to cancer cells. Dr. Mamdooh Ghoneum, PhD, Chief of Research, Department of Otolaryngology, Charles Drew University of Medicine in Los Angeles, has spent 20 years studying substances that effect immune response. While experimenting with natural extracts, he discovered a substance that he called MGN-3 – an extract of rice bran, modified by enzymes from shiitake mushrooms – which he found very effective for cancer treatment. Dr. Ghoneum’s research suggests that MGN3 simulates anti-tumour effects within the body and activates the body’s Natural Killer cells, our immune system’s key defense cells. MGN-3 led to a significant increase in NK cell activity after only one to two weeks, which correlated with increased survival rates. It can be safely used in conjunction with conventional treatment, including chemotherapy. Other clinical studies have also verified its effectiveness. A 1996 study involving 27 patients with different forms of cancer (presented at the 87th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research), all taking conventional treatments and 3 grams of MGN-3 per day, showed that patients had significant rises in NK cell activity when taking MGN-3. These ranged from 100 percent to 537 percent increases. In

53

|

1998, a study documented in the International Journal of Immunotherapy (XIV-2, pg 89-99) involved 24 patients taking MGN-3 in three different concentrations. NK cell activity was significantly increased after one week and peaked at two months in all individuals. Though conventional therapies reduce cancer cell numbers very effectively, unfortunately, it‘s impossible to achieve a 100 percent kill rate without harming the patient. When 95 to 98 percent of the cancer cells with these therapies are killed, a patient may be considered “in remission” and treatment is stopped. However, these remissions are frequently short-lived. Chemotherapy and radiation suppress the immune system, lowering the fighting power of anti-cancer cells. Following treatment, the few hardy cancer cells that survive may be left to replicate largely unchallenged by a damaged immune system. Dr. Mamdooh Ghoneum feels that “watchful waiting,” monitoring patients in remission, wastes the opportunity to provide increased support to the immune system. At early stages of detection, or in advanced stages when the tumour has been reduced as far as possible by surgery and/or chemotherapy, boosting the immune system allows the body to eradicate the remaining cells that have escaped. MGN-3 cannot replace these therapies in advanced malignancies. Dr. Ghoneum recommends that cancer patients begin MGN-3 at the same time or immediately following other therapies. Cancer is not only preventable; research shows that it’s now curable in many cases. Consider lifestyle changes and natural approaches to support the immune system that can have a significant impact on your outcome and your future wellness.

id you know that 90 percent of our nutritional energy comes from oxygen and only 10 percent is derived from food? Oxygen is fundamental. Colourless, tasteless and odourless, oxygen is the supreme element — a primary nutrient without which life couldn’t exist. We can live without food for weeks and without water for between three and seven days. But how long can we live without oxygen? Five minutes. That’s how important it is. Our bodies literally starve without oxygen. Each of the body’s estimated 100 trillion cells requires oxygen for each and every one of its metabolic processes. We need oxygen in order to combust foods to provide energy for the heart, brain and cells. All functions of our body are regulated by oxygen. The ability to think, feel, move, eat, sleep and even talk all depend on energy generated from oxygen. Our brain needs oxygen to process information. Our body uses oxygen to metabolize food and to eliminate toxins and waste through oxidation. Oxygen energizes cells so they can regenerate, and provides vital cellular flexibility. In fact, all of our organs need a great deal of oxygen to function efficiently. That’s why it must be replaced on a moment-to-moment basis. Oxygen is one of the most significant antiaging components. The more we saturate our cells with stabilized oxygen, the lower the rate of wear and tear on our bodies. Oxygen’s natural ability to catabolize or oxidize bacteria, fungi and viruses plays a very significant role in preventing degenerative diseases and sustaining the natural immortality factor of the cell. In fact, were we to take any fungus, virus or pathogenic bacteria and put them in a petri culture dish, then drop stabilized oxygen on them, they would all die on contact. So, it’s clear that oxygen plays one of the most critical roles in our overall health. If we want to enjoy the benefits of more energy, better metabolism, resistance to pathogens, and a way to fight premature aging, getting more oxygen onto our cells is the key.

Put Life Back into Your Pet’s Food T

he money and time saved feeding convenient, less expensive food to your pet is sure to be spent in multiples on veterinary bills and medical care as your pet ages. As animals age, antioxidant production in their cells declines, making it more difficult for them to tolerate adversity; this includes their ability to tolerate nutritional deficiencies and illnesses. The obvious solution is to choose the best quality nourishment possible from puppyhood; food that has not been processed, or at least that preserves the most nutrient activity possible. However, this is still not enough health insurance for your senior pet. Based on what we know today, those “agerelated” ailments in your senior are not likely to be related to aging. All diseases are characterised by underlying inflammation. This inflammation can be advanced or prevented by dietary factors, the most helpful being fatty acids and antioxidants. Processed, oxidized foods contribute to this underlying inflammation, which reduces your pet’s ability to defend against disease. It also advances your pet’s biological age prematurely. Processed food contributes to that underlying inflammation in two ways. One way is by giving your pet omega fatty acids which are oxidized or damaged by processing. In their whole, biologically active forms, these delicate molecules can help manage inflammation. In their damaged state they contribute to uncontrolled oxidation and inflammation. The other way processed pet foods contribute to inflammation is through their deficiency of antioxidant activity which is also destroyed during processing. Biologically active antioxidants from whole fresh food would otherwise help defuse elevated oxidation and inflammation. These natural protectors and cell preservers are unavailable if the majority of the diet is processed. Oxidized, processed food and the deactivated nourishment it supplies reduce longevity and life quality. By improving antioxidant and fatty acid status in the cells, inflammation is better controlled; premature aging is circumvented. This can be accomplished rather effortlessly through changes in diet, improved fatty acid intake and enhanced vitamin, mineral and antioxidant supplementation. Improvements in energy, recovery from daily physical work and exercise, skin tone and coat lustre and thickness, general strength and endurance, vigour and happiness quickly result when supplementation is administered correctly. These visible signs are indications of much deeper improvement in metabolic health. Aging is not a function of time. It is simply a function of biological wear and tear. Uncontrolled

By Franco Cavaleri

inflammation accelerates that wear and tear by preventing the natural restorative processes from doing their wonderful work in your young vigorous pet. The result is a pet that ages before his or her time. Our pets’ cells are equipped with maintenance systems which can become sluggish with age just like our own can. More accurately, these genecoded systems can become inhibited by unnatural levels of oxidation. Since oxidation and inflammation go hand-in-hand, these processes can both interfere with natural regeneration and maintenance if they are out of control. Supplementation with balanced and biologically active fatty acids can help control inflammation and improve your pet’s state of health. Supplementing with the right “cofactor” vitamins and minerals is also important. These cofactor nutrients are needed by the cells to process these fats, and help guide the fats down the right

cellular paths. A supplemental supply of phytoantioxidants further improves the cell’s ability to use and preserve these fatty acids in their active forms in the body by helping control oxidation. Individually these different categories of nutrition can improve your pet’s health, but they really deliver formidable impact when they are supplemented together since they depend on each other for maximum biological activity. Put life back in to your pet’s food — choose food that is as unprocessed and whole as possible and supplement with a species-specific fatty acid blend and a vitamin, mineral phytoantioxidant. Your pet’s health is in your hands. Franco Cavaleri, nutritional biochemist, is a graduate of UBC, and majored in nutritional science and biochemistry. ountries around the world have declared war on plastic shopping bags. But what about other types of plastics? From salad containers to disposable water bottles, plastic is the packaging material of choice. Look beyond the grocery store, and you can find plastics everywhere from fibres in clothes and carpets to children’s toys and medical devices. Try to imagine a world without plastic: your home wouldn’t exist, your car wouldn’t exist, and your computer wouldn’t exist. Plastic is not a natural product; it needs to be manufactured, a process that takes a toll on the environment. Most plastics are made from petroleum and natural gas. According to the Pacific Institute, it takes 17 million barrels of crude oil to produce a one-year supply of water bottles for the US alone. One glance at a landfill tells of the extent of the plastic problem. Plastics take anywhere from 100 to 1,000 years to break down, creating a massive litter problem. Recycling was supposed to be the solution to the waste crisis. For example, plastic water bottles and food containers could be turned into carpet and plastic lumber products, eliminating the amount of waste heading to landfills. Not all plastics are recycled by facilities, but this isn’t because the material cannot be recycled. Recycling facilities get paid for their plastics based on weight; the more a plastic weighs, the more profit the facility makes. Lightweight plastics, like polystyrene foam and PVC, are not profitable, so some recycling facilities throw these plastics away with the rest of the garbage. Once in the landfill, plastic slowly starts to break down, releasing chemicals into the environment. Unfortunately, those chemicals can also end up in your body. Environmental Defence, a national advocacy group, commissioned a report entitled “Toxic Nation.” The study tested a group of Canadians for toxic chemicals found in everyday items, including plastics. The results were conclusive — Canadians are contaminated. One worrying contaminant is bisphenol A, also known as BPA. This chemical is commonly found in polycarbonate plastic baby bottles and

soft drink cans. BPA is a hormone disruptor. When ingested in high doses, it can cause miscarriages, prostate and breast cancer, and early puberty in females, according to Environmental Defence. Children are especially vulnerable to BPA; the chemical can affect the way their bodies grow and develop. In 2008, the federal government placed BPA on the List of Toxic Substances of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, ensuring that all children’s bottles and drinking cups are BPA-free. However, BPA is still found in the lining of food and beverage cans — and in the bodies of Canadians. BPA isn’t the only dangerous chemical in plastics. The Canadian Cancer Society has voiced concern about phthalates, chemicals added to plastics to make products soft and flexible. Phthalates are common, showing up in everything from medical IV bags to cosmetics and children’s toys. These chemicals may act as endocrine disruptors; by interfering with hormones in the body, they can cause fertility problems and certain types of cancer. One type of phthalate, DEHP, is particularly worrying. According to the US National Toxicology Program (NTP), DEHP is “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.” Polypropylene is supposed to be the safe alternative. Unlike other types of plastics, polypropylene does not contain BPA or phthalates, making it the popular choice for food and drink containers. But polypropylene is not chemicalfree; the chemical compounds it does contain can leach out of the plastic and into your food. Researchers at the University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry discovered that chemicals leaching out of their polypropylene plastic lab equipment affected the results of their medical experiments. Their discovery was described in the academic journal Science. Two types of chemical compounds leached out of the plasticare anti-bacterial agents and oleamide. According to Andy Holt, lead researcher and professor of pharmacology, these chemicals may affect health. The plastic additives reacted with

human enzymes in test tubes. Researchers will need to conduct more tests to see what effect these chemicals have on the human body. Plastic may be hazardous to human health and the environment, but ridding the Earth of all plastic products is no easy task. Eliminating plastic grocery bags alone is not going to cut it. Product manufacturers need to look at glass, stainless steel, wood and cardboard as viable alternatives. Glass is a safe alternative to plastic, but it does have one drawback: its weight. Critics argue that bottling water and soda in glass would increase shipping costs and CO2 emissions. But are those critics correct? A 2008 study by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) of the UK compared the carbon impact of glass wine bottles versus PET plastic wine bottles. The results were surprising: overall, light glass bottles produced the same amount of CO2 emissions as PET bottles. Plastic bottles weigh less than glass, resulting in slightly lower CO2 emissions during shipping. But the CO2 emissions saved in transit are spent in manufacturing. It takes a lot more energy to make a plastic bottle than it does to make a glass one. By using lightweight glass bottles made of recycled content, and by using trains for transport instead of planes, glass becomes the eco-friendly option. Other eco-friendly options are just waiting to be discovered. Wouldn’t a salad taste just as fresh if it were packaged in a cardboard container as opposed to a plastic one? Wouldn’t children be just as happy playing with chemical-free wooden toys instead of chemical-laden plastic ones? And wouldn’t your leftovers taste just as good stored in glass or stainless steel containers as they would in plastic? With a bit of effort and creative thinking, society can solve the plastic problem for good. Is Plastic Poisoning Us? By Jay Sinha

I

hear a lot of stories about experiences with sensitivity to plastic. The one that has most affected me is from the woman who said that she is so sensitive to plastic that she cannot drink anything in a plastic bottle or eat anything that has been stored in plastic – whether it’s yogurt, cheeses or breads. If she tries to eat a “fresh” croissant from a bakery she can tell immediately if it really is fresh or if it was stored in a Costcolike plastic box of bulk croissants. Even if just the ingredients for the croissant were stored in plastic, she cannot eat it. Her physical reaction to this miniscule plastic exposure is getting internal gas that produces a toxic smell or taste of plastic. She has no known allergies, but traces her plastic poisoning to years spent in China where her symptoms began. There she regularly consumed drinking water delivered in large plastic bottles that were used and reused until they degraded to the point of being useless. Now her life revolves around avoiding plastic. She eats fresh

as much as possible, and finds it both amazing and terrifying that so few foods are available without any plastic packaging. I wonder how many others like her feel sick, though possibly without any idea why? Plastic has many important uses. But it was never meant to be ingested by living beings or to pollute the natural environment for the hundreds of years many plastics require to degrade. Plastics are generally made from petroleum, a toxic non-renewable resource. The 260 million tonnes of plastic created annually account for approximately 8 percent of global oil production. The problems with plastic are linked to both the environment and health. The most vivid, well-researched examples of plastic as a waste management disaster can be seen in the oceans, in particular, the Central North Pacific where a gyre of cyclic currents the size of Texas has accumulated a patch of garbage where plastic outnumbers zooplankton by a ratio of 6:1. Plankton are at the base of the food chain and enable oceans to be the largest carbon sink on Earth. The health-related problems with bisphenol A (BPA) – used to make the hard, clear plastic polycarbonate (recycling symbol #7) – have gained widespread exposure as baby and water bottles have been pulled from store shelves and the Canadian government has banned use of BPA in baby bottles. The US Food and Drug Administration has swayed from its earlier position that BPA is safe by announcing that it has some concern about the potential effects of BPA on the brain, behaviour, and prostate gland in fetuses, infants and young children.

What about all the other plastics?

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC; recycling symbol #3) and polystyrene (PS; recycling symbol #6) are also now obvious ones to avoid. PVC is commonly used in toys, cling wrap, squeeze bottles, oil and peanut butter containers and shower curtains, and has been described as one of the most hazardous consumer products ever created. PS forms the ubiquitous styrofoam used in disposable tableware, take-out containers and egg containers. PVC and PS leach endocrine disrupting chemicals that mimic the female hormone estrogen and have been linked to numerous bodily ailments ranging from asthma and allergies to reproductive and developmental problems and certain cancers. Polyethylene terephalate (PETE; recycling symbol #1), used to make single use water bottles, is also worth avoiding because research is beginning to emerge that it can leach endocrine disrupting chemicals, too. High density polyethylene (HDPE; recycling symbol #2), low density polyethylene (LDPE; recycling symbol #4) and polypropylene (PP; recycling symbol #5) – plastics used for such products as opaque milk and water jugs, plastic bags and wraps, yogurt containers – are generally considered to be safer, but this does not mean they are entirely safe, just that they have been studied less to date. A final anecdote: I recently responded to an email from a thirty-something woman who was just diagnosed with breast cancer. She has no family history of breast cancer, and says that in terms of diet and exercise she does everything right. She is convinced that her cancer developed from years of exposure to toxins leaching out of the water bottles she stored in her car trunk in the heat and drank from daily. Are we at the tip of the iceberg?

Inside The Cove: The Dolphin Cover-up By Carol Crenna

T

he Academy Award-winning film The Cove has been described as an action thriller movie as often as it has an investigative documentary. In the film, under the guidance of Louie Psihoyos, Oceanic Preservation Society, and Ric O’Barry, the dolphin trainer who made the TV show Flipper internationally successful, two Canadians help to uncover a secret in Taiji, Japan. In a covert operation, free-diver Mandy Cruickshank, underwater photographer Kirk Krank, and The Cove team dodge police, irate fishermen and perhaps the Japanese mafia to reveal this village’s horrific dolphin kill. The documentary exposes an event that’s been happening relatively unnoticed for decades — fishermen lure 23,000 dolphins a year into a hidden cove to first select a few for the very lucrative aquarium and swim-with-dolphins market, and then brutally harpoon the rest to sell their contaminated flesh cheaply as “whale meat.” A remorseful O’Barry explains that captive dolphins are given human antidepressant medications due to extreme stress from living in close quarters and loud crowd noises, and he’s compelled to stop what he feels responsible for starting. This alarming documentary’s mission is to gather evidence to end the slaughter. VISTA speaks with BC-based Mandy Cruickshank and Kirk Krank, who are featured throughout the film, about their experiences. VISTA: What did you two do in the film? Kirk: As free-divers, we swam into the middle of the cove at 2:00 a.m. and dove to place cameras at depths that would capture the sound and some images of the slaughter. Unlike the others, we didn’t have walkie-talkies to communicate so didn’t know when Japanese men were approaching — it was unnerving to be literally and figuratively left in the dark. Freediving (without equipment) allowed agility to go in unnoticed, and if detected, to quickly escape. We worked at depths less than 100 feet, and Mandy, who’s held the world record seven times, can free-dive 300 feet. Mandy: We were already tense because we

risked being immediately arrested if followed. Since we’d never been in those waters, we didn’t know their depth, and the unknown made it a little frightening. With a regular slaughter we assumed there would be predatory animals waiting. VISTA: Do you get close to dolphins? Kirk: When getting additional footage in the Bahamas, four dolphins came close. Mandy put her hand out and a dolphin rolled itself into her hand to be scratched. She held the 200-pound wild dolphin in her arms and massaged its belly with its eyes closed. It grabbed a piece of plastic floating in the water, swam to Mandy and let it go, then caught it on its fin to impress her, grabbed it again, then squeaked because it wanted her to play tug-o-war just like a dog with a sock. Mandy complied, both to play and take away the dangerous piece of garbage. The connection was powerful because the wild dolphin sought us out, interacting on its terms, even waiting for us as we surfaced for air. Mandy: The hardest part of this job was to go in and do what was required but not release the captured dolphins. If we released them, we would save that pod but risk being jailed and losing the footage, preventing us from finishing the film that would make greater impact on many more dolphins. It was difficult to watch and hear panic rippling through the water on the microphone as they were speared, and the next time we dove it was completely silent. VISTA: How inhumane is it? Kirk: Research shows dolphins to have the IQ of a five-year-old human – being intelligent, self recognizing, easily able to learn, acutely sensitive to stimulus, social, and aware of time, such as past and future. In Taiji, young bottlenose dolphins were cornered off, witnessing the slaughter of their family; and then shipped to live their life doing tricks in a concrete tank only because Flipper dolphins were bottlenose and therefore what the public wants. When the others are speared, it takes 15 to 20 minutes for them to die. We would

59

see them frantically swimming toward shore with a blood trail, struggling for breath, seeming to be crying for help. It was heartbreaking. VISTA: How do people become interested enough to help save wild species without having encounters in captivity to feel a connection? Kirk: Through documentaries and regulated whale watching excursions. We also questioned our values around eating meat. Even though we eat free range, organic meat, who were we to tell Japanese fishermen that they can’t kill dolphins when we eat cows? If you remove the cute/cuddly/smart dolphin aspects from the equation, the tainted meat issue prevails. Dolphin meat has 1,200 to 2,000 ppm (parts per million) of mercury vs .4 ppm allowable in edible fish, making it highly toxic to humans. However, mercury contamination was caused by man – from factories dumping toxic waste – so taking that out of the equation, too, an intelligent argument focuses on what’s ethical and humane. They aren’t harvesting, selecting certain numbers or leaving for the future, they kill entire pods, removing that genetic diversity from the species. VISTA: What about the argument that it’s their cultural heritage to eat whales? Mandy: If it is part of their proud culture, why do they hide it and mislabel it? A 2006 article in The Japan Times stated that 6,000 tonnes of whale meat went unused and wasted the previous year. How many whales were killed needlessly? Taiji, the largest global supplier of dolphins for dolphinariums, is a tourist area promoting dolphins as beautiful creatures to Japanese people, and its residents don’t eat dolphin and don’t know about the slaughter. VISTA: How can we help? Kirk: The website www.thecovemovie/takepart offers tips, from being selective about the type of fish you eat to avoiding dolphinariums. To help the Taiji dolphin cause, contact www.savejapandolphins.org.

Out! Out! Damn (Age) Spot!

Bothered by Age Spots? Want younger looking skin?

By Alyssa Rolnick

A

s we age, dark spots or age spots on our hands and face are a common occurrence. If you don’t have them yet, you will notice them on your mother’s or grandmother’s hands the next time you see them. Medically termed hyper-pigmentation, these spots are caused by the body’s overproduction of melanin (skin pigment). How does this happen, you ask? Overexposure to the sun is the main contributor, causing the enzyme tyrosinase to be overproduced which leads to too much skin pigment or melanin. The sun’s UV light stimulates the skin’s melanocyte cells which produce melanin, and where concentrations of the cells are denser than surrounding areas, hyperpigmentation results. However, over time, hyperpigmentation can be reversed with natural ingredients that either block the production of melanin and/ or absorb darkening UV rays.

What reverses this dark spotting process?

Hydroquinone (HQ) and kojic acid based products are available in most pharmacies, but may not be ideal for you. Hydroquinone, the most popular tyrosinase inhibitor, has been banned in Japan, the European Union and Australia due to skin irritation, and evidence of carcinogenic properties in non-human studies. In North America, many HQ products are still available. Kojic acid is an alternative to hydroquinone. However, regular exposure to this chemical increases a person’s skin sensitivity, which suggests an increased risk of allergic contact dermatitis. If you’re a health conscious shopper looking for alternatives to hydroquinone and kojic acid, here are some natural ingredients to consider: Niacinamide, a unique form of vitamin B3, is an effective skin lightening compound and is also good for dry, flaking, aging skin. Licorice extract absorbs UVA and UVB rays. It is also a de-pigmenting agent, inhibiting the production of melanin. Aloe has subtle skin lightening properties by absorbing UV light, and it also moisturizes ageing skin.

Darkspot Cream™ Pharmacist Developed Made in Canada ✦ Citrus inshiu peel extract has clinically proven skin-lightening effects. These effects are thought to be due to its specific form of vitamin C, which inhibits melanin production. Vitamin E has antioxidant properties that help protect and rejuvenate aging skin. Vitamin A or retinyl palmitate has exfoliation properties to help remove old and expose new skin cells.

Made with the following Natural Ingredients: Niacinamide, Licorice Extract, Aloe, Citrus Inshiu Peel Extract, Retinyl Palmitate, Vitamin E

What can I expect from treatment?

Results will vary depending on how dark the spots are, how much time you’ve previously spent in the sun and how consistently you follow treatment. Several weeks (often at least four weeks) of application may be necessary to see results. For best results, wash and pat dry the area before applying cream that includes one or more of these ingredients. A loofah helps to slough off dead skin cells to expose lighter skin beneath. In some cases when using these natural ingredients, the spots only fade slightly but the cream may help to prevent new spots from appearing. Therefore, it is important to use a dark spot or age spot cream before the pigmentation becomes too pronounced. It’s vital to protect your skin against new age spots and prolong the results of any type of treatment by wearing sun block on these areas and sunscreen on all exposed areas of the body every day. Nature Provides Clinically Proven Remedies For Two Common Health Concerns

J

oint pain and bone degeneration are prevalent in today’s society, preventing us from enjoying activities we once enjoyed. Get relief and preventative protection from a natural source you could eat! Research shows that we’ve been throwing away 2 sustainable, convenient and effective options for renewed bone health and pain-free joint flexibility. A completely natural process can transform eggshells and their inner membranes into powerful therapeutic and health maintenance supplements with no chemical additives. One entrepreneur has successfully fine tuned this research making the health benefits easily available, easy to use and easy to justify by science. And he’s done so with no egg on his face! Using only steam (water), followed by a special enzymatic process, two clinically proven ingredients with potent health benefits are created from eggshells - NEM® (Natural Eggshell Membrane) and ESC® (EggShell Calcium).

No more joint pain from one pill per day Just as many users of glucosamine and chondroitin products get relief as there are those who do not. And relief comes at a cost of scarfing down handfuls of expensive pills. In addition, glucosamine and chondroitin are often not tolerated well by those with digestive disorders and insufficiencies while the eggshell derivatives are. In three separate studies NEM proves to be the naturally logical alternative to healthy joints. · In an open-label clinical test, one-third of patients using just ONE pill per day of the eggshell membrane preparation (Membrell® JOINThealth® with NEM®) noticed a reduction in pain within 7 days. A clear majority of the patients experienced a significant reduction in pain within 30 days. · In another study published in Clinical Interventions in Aging, NEM® was shown to be beneficial for osteoarthritis: “55% of subjects experienced greater than 50% improvement in flexibility and 36% reported they were completely pain-free while

flexing the affected joint.” A new double-blind placebo-controlled study published in Clinical Rheumatology found that NEM® can provide joint health benefits in just 10 days. Science naturally built into the membrane Typical glucosamine is chemically extracted from shellfish. This glucosamine is then often reacted to produce glucosamine sulfate or n-acetylglucosamine (NAG). The glucosamine from NEM® is not isolated or reacted but rather allowed to exist in its natural matrix containing NAG, chondroitin, hyaluronic acid and other glycosaminoglycans, as well as collagen and other proteins essential for healthy joints. This natural matrix is very similar in components and their proportions to the membranes in human joints. As a result of the undisturbed eggshell matrix the body can absorb and use the beneficial elements more efficiently and therapeutic results are noticeable from much lower doses. Not only is the eggshell preparation less likely to cause intestinal discomfort or nausea than other joint supplements, it supports intestinal healing. Healing the intestinal lining is critical for general nutrient absorption empowering the body to heal and maintain other tissues spontaneously. Strong bones from natural eggshells Almost 2 million Canadians suffer from osteoporosis, and we’re being diagnosed at younger ages than ever before. Research shows that we need to take charge of bone health early in life to feed a dense bone mineral foundation that lasts us lifelong. The next step is in preventing this bone density from diminishing over the years. Both can be accomplished using natural eggshell calcium. Most calcium supplements are derived from limestone rock and coral reef substrate and are exposed to chemical extraction and reaction. Eggshell calcium is natural, chemical free and easy on the intestines. Europeans have consumed eggshells as a calcium supplement for centuries and research is validating the great results they’ve enjoyed. The matrix in eggshells mimics the makeup of human bone so the body gets all the support minerals and other compounds needed to build bone with the calcium. These include hyarulonic acid, magnesium and vitamin D3 all built into the matrix in naturally functional proportions. Special transporter proteins (amino acids) also support calcium absorption. ESC® (EggShell Calcium) naturally helps build and protect strong resilient bones. Choose Membrell® and let eggshells be your answer for pain-free living and strong bones throughout your life.

The Importance of Electrolytes By Matthew Tim Anderson

M

any people hear the word “electrolytes” but have no idea what they are or how necessary they are to good health. Electrolytes are responsible for maintaining proper fluid balance within cells. Every time one of our hundreds of muscles contracts or relaxes, electrolytes are in use. Every one of our trillions of cells relies on electrolytes for the transportation of nutrients and waste, and for basic metabolism (energy required for functioning of every cell in the body). Electrolytes are minerals – including calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium and chloride – capable of transmitting electrical charges within fluids. This function, in addition to the reciprocal relationship between water and electrolytes, is extremely important since 60 to 70 percent of the human body is made up of water. It makes sense then that we can optimize health and vitality by maintaining proper levels of fluids and electrolytes in our diets. Within our bodies, electrolytes are transmitters for the 100 million or so messages per second that are relayed within the nervous system. Electrolytes are necessary for all brain functions: without these electric transmissions, the brain could not stay in control of the body’s many functions. Factors that increase our need for electrolytes include pregnancy, poor diet, dehydration, use of diuretics (including coffee and other caffeinated drinks), disease, exertion, vomiting, diarrhea, trauma and excessive perspiration. When our bodies thirst for water, we almost certainly also crave electrolytes. Prominent signs of electrolyte imbalance or deficiency include muscle weakness, cramps, swelling, slowed nerve conduction and muscle function, and general weakness and apathy. Any mineral or trace element in the ionic form is capable of functioning as an electrolyte; however, it is imperative to understand that not all of the various forms of minerals or trace minerals available as supplements are capable of becoming electrolytes within the body. Minerals become electrolytes or ionic when they are truly dissolved, not just suspended, in liquid. Only minerals that are already ionic, or those capable of becoming ionic through digestion, can per-

63

|

form the vital roles of electrolytes. Exercise is important for maintaining and improving our health. One of the reasons we get tired when we exercise is because the level of electrolytes in our body decreases. By taking additional electrolytes, we can exercise longer and recover faster. Of course, if we exercise more than two to three hours, our body will require other nutrients including vitamins and carbohydrates, but in order to absorb and use these nutrients at the cellular level, we will still need electrolytes. If we want to enjoy being active, we have to take enough electrolytes before, during and after exercise. Electrolytes are particularly vital for athletes, but also the elderly, people working in hot weather, and those who perspire a lot need to supplement with electrolytes, and will feel much better after taking them. The secrets to staying healthy: exercise, drink plenty of water, and ensure that we’re getting enough electrolytes. Matthew Tim Anderson, BIS (Bachelor of Integrated Studies) has been involved in harvesting minerals for human nutritional use since 1969.

Protection Against Toxins, Chemicals and Drugs By Dr. James Meschino

W

e have all learned that antioxidants are important nutrients to help us stave off illness and premature aging. One antioxidant that you may not be aware of is called glutathione. Although glutathione is not as well known as antioxidant vitamins A, C and E, it is a premiere antioxidant that protects each cell in the body from damaging free radicals. Glutathione also plays a vital role in detoxifying the body of toxins, synthetic chemicals and drugs, and boosting the immune system’s function. Even though our bodies make glutathione, the high concentrations of toxins in the world today continually consume glutathione within the detoxification reactions required to protect our bodies against dangerous environmental chemicals in food, water and the air we breathe. As a result, most of us live out each day in a semi-depleted glutathione state, which leaves our tissues prone to mutagenic (capable of mutating into diseased cells) and inflammatory damage. These are created by the environmental chemicals, toxins and drugs (including alcohol) that escape detoxification and antioxidant neutralization by our bodies. Damage of this nature contributes to development of cancer, susceptibility to infection, liver damage, and other degenerative problems. For example, regular use of the pain medication acetaminophen has been shown to deplete liver stores of glutathione enough to render it susceptible to progressive inflammation and degenerative changes. This can set the stage for liver failure and the necessity of a liver transplant.

Toxic environment and glutathione depletion

It’s not just acetaminophen users who need more glutathione. A quick historical review highlights the fact that since the Second World War, an estimated 85,000 synthetic chemicals have been registered in the US (and presumably similar stats would be found in Canada). Today’s environment exposes us to a multitude of pesticides, herbicides, plastics (such as PVC), xenoestrogens (including bisphenol A and parabens), chemicals and pollutants in our food, water and air. The human body has had very little time to adapt to these new challenges, many of which over-tax our detoxification system, suppress im-

65

mune function, and create free radical damage by draining our glutathione stores. Experts have shown that our newly evolving chemical environment is a major contributing factor to the growing incidence of cancer, immune disorders, liver disease and many other illnesses. We need higher stores of antioxidants to protect our tissues against the toxic world in which we live since there is no way to completely avoid exposure.

How to boost glutathione stores

The good news is that you can boost your glutathione stores with daily supplementation of such ingredients as N-acetylcysteine, alphalipoic acid, silymarin (from milk thistle) and L-glutamine. Each of these natural ingredients has shown success in raising glutathione levels on their own. For example, alpha-lipoic acid has been shown to help repair nerve damage, slow the progression of kidney disease, help stabilize blood sugar, remove heavy metals from the body, and enhance the effects of certain chemotherapy drugs. L-glutamine helps repair intestinal cell damage and is an important fuel for many immune cells – boosting their ability to kill microbes and emerging cancer cells. Silymarin repairs damaged liver cells and acts as a powerful liver antioxidant. N-acetylcysteine provides liver protection and is used in the management of chronic immune deficiency states. When you combine these ingredients, their synergistic action provides the most optimal and noticeable health benefits. It’s important to remember that taking glutathione alone is not useful, since studies show that glutathione supplements are not well absorbed from the intestinal tract. However, studies do show an increase in glutathione levels through the supplementation of ingredients such as N-acetylcysteine, alpha-lipoic acid, silymarin (from milk thistle) and L-glutamine can help to boost our bodies’ stores and, therefore, increase our inner army of free radical-fighters. Paperback Heroes

Books that Inspire Healthy Living By Michelle Kwon The Revolutionary Trauma Release Process, by David Berceli, PhD, published by Namaste Publishing, $21.95

Author Dr. David Berceli understands trauma; he worked in war-torn countries of Africa and the Middle East. Offering recovery assistance to the US military and relief agency staff, he created a simple release technique that anyone can do to return them to emotionally healthy balance, even in severe trauma cases. For those of us living minor stresses and traumas, Berceli says that the hurtful experiences we go through aren’t simply forgotten, but are etched deeply in our psyche and our body. His release process is a series of stretching/tremoring exercises that release tension by working on the hip flexors. Perhaps the reason they’re given near the end of the book is because it is the preceding wisdom about the positive sides to trauma and the inspirational stories from his experiences with Mother Teresa to suicidal soldiers to heads of conflicting organizations that give them meaning. He states that we all run from our trauma out of fear, and often feel trauma out of lack of trust in others, and that our bodies feel the same way when we “disconnect from it in order to escape the feelings of trauma” by tensing shoulders, chest tightness, shallow breathing and anxiety in the abdomen. Those who have been severely traumatized tend to overreact to situations because they don’t have the ability to “rate their fear on a scale for perspective” and, therefore, become defensive, angry or withdrawn, or become controlling, perfectionists or avoid accountability. If you notice these tendencies in yourself or others, the book will be very helpful.

The Meschino Optimal Living Program, by Dr. James Meschino, self published (ISBN 978-0-9812029-0-7), $26.99

For an author to write a guide to optimal living, they have to know their stuff. Toronto’s Dr. James Meschino is a naturopath, chiropractor, orthomolecular practitioner and acupuncturist, a Fellow of the Academy of Anti-Aging Research, director at the Canadian Integrative Cancer Immunotherapies Clinic, and lectures on nutrition, athletic performance, antiaging and natural medicine across the US and Canada. In his fourth book, he offers seven steps to a “healthy, fit, age-resistant body” that promise to help you shed weight, feel and look younger, improve your fitness, fight illness and “have the body that nature intended you to have.” Those steps include 1. Learning the basics about the right types of food 2. Committing to the right types of supplements for life (multivitamins, antioxidants, flaxseeds) 3. Choosing the right type of exercise programme 4. Opting for a two-staple nutrition system (the right protein and carbs — includes meal plans and tips on weight loss, snacks, eating out) 5. Taking anti-aging supplements (CoQ10, reishi mushroom, natural hormone balancers, detoxification) 6. Setting specific goals for health, fitness and anti-aging 7. Learning how to track, monitor and stick to those goals. He stresses that the simple, daily effort required to optimize your health is well within your ability, means and timetable, and if you don’t make daily effort, the resulting illness or disability may make all daily activities difficult and beyond your means. www.adeeva.com or 1-888-251-1010

Himalayan Crystal Salt, by Dr. Jurgen Weihofen, published by Sanoform (Germany), available at health stores, $10.88

In this little pocket guide of 88 pages, the author explains that pure crystal salt from the sea, not the sodium chloride most of us refer to as salt, doesn’t just contain sodium, but a range of minerals — everything that was in the sea 250 million years ago. It also has calcium, magnesium, potassium, sulphur, silicon, iron, zinc, manganese, chromium, copper, cobalt, iodine and selenium, which are all vital to our health. This type of natural salt has been therapeutically used both externally and internally since the ancient Egyptians. Today, most German health resorts base therapies on salt for everything from digestive and respiratory problems to joint pain. This book discusses uses well known in North America – therapeutic baths, and salt solutions for nasal, throat cleansing and dental hygiene. It explains the proper way to take a salt bath: bathe for 5 to 20 minutes in warm to hot water, and then lay in bed for one hour before washing salt off. It also discusses uses not well known — ingesting this salt provides dramatic results to detoxify connective tissue, increase digestion, and stimulate metabolism and the body’s healing process. For skin trouble, a mask combining it with therapeutic mud reduces cellulite, and it’s applied with warm water for eczema, acne and psoriasis, and internally ingested for these, too, since they are often caused by faulty digestion.

The Town that Lost Weight

Mulberry zuccarin by New Nordic

By John Austen

I

n the small town of Alesund in Norway, many of the residents began eating a common plant that made over 1,500 of them lose weight! They were given the plant on the recommendation of a health food store owner who felt that he had stumbled upon a new dieting strategy. It simply used the leaves of a mulberry bush. Other than the nursery rhyme about going “round the mulberry bush,” you probably know very little about this plant, called Morus alba, and its health-giving benefits. You may have eaten mulberries as fruit, plucked from Canadian bushes that can grow to large trees, but mulberry leaves are also consumed. They’re used as a tea in Japan, eaten as a vegetable in India, and in other Eastern cultures, made into a pancake with a mixture of leaf powder and wheat flour. They’re rich in calcium, vitamin C, carotene and protein. The medicinal qualities of the leaves have also been known for centuries, used as a blood purifier, diuretic, and more recently to treat diabetes. The leaves show promise for diabetes because they help glucose regulation and have anti-hyperglycemic properties. What does this have to do with weight loss, and why did the store owner consider them? In 2006, a customer of Johnny Pettersen asked him for advice on how to eliminate sugar cravings. He states, “I gave my customer mulberry leaf tablets because mulberry is known to lower your blood sugar after meals. When blood sugar is stable, sugar cravings disappear. And it worked very well.” Pettersen, who was just as surprised as the customer that it worked, says, “I started recommending mulberry to many customers and soon noticed that they were losing weight. This made me curious, so I studied the effect of mulberries on blood sugar, insulin and fat burning. Surely enough, mulberry leaves led to lower insulin secretion, which makes you able to burn stored fat better and also reduces fat storage from excess calories.” Pettersen increased the dosage, recommending two mulberry tablets before each meal. He found that his customers not only controlled their sugar cravings, but also lost weight.

A new trick for weight loss

Since sugar works as a drug on the brain, you need to eliminate the addictive urge for a “sugar high” to stay slim, says Pettersen. Taking mulberry leaves, his customers changed to a healthier diet without even noticing it — they simply didn’t crave sugar. After the success of the first customers, word travelled fast. In the last 12 months, Pettersen, who admits that he is not a health practitioner or a weight loss consultant, worked with over 1,500 customers in Alesund and the surrounding area. He feels that his simple and natural mulberry formula has been a tremendous success. He concludes, “Once my customers try mulberry leaves, they come back, often with friends and family, and buy several packages. It is rewarding because I see them coming back happy, healthy and slimmer.” Clinical studies show that mulberry leaves regulate blood sugar levels. For dieters, this means a lower production of insulin after eating carbohydrates. Insulin is responsible for storing excess calories as fat and for shutting down fat burning. Too much insulin is a dieter’s worst enemy! So perhaps the verse, “Here we go round the mulberry bush so early in the morning,” which originally described traditional cultures picking its leaves and berries, will be resurrected as an anthem for dieters who hum it triumphantly as they take the plant each morning before heading out for their waist-whittling workout.

Garlic Edamame

By Tracy Kaye Holly

Edamame (ed-a-mam-eh), the Japanese word for green soybeans, is an integral part of Asian cuisine. In Japan, edamame is a popular snack food. The combination of great taste, ease of preparation and excellent nutrient value is also making edamame popular with North Americans of all ages. Many people are familiar with soy‑ beans, but few have experienced the sweet, nutty taste of boiled edamame.

O

ne of the most common ways to enjoy this tasty legume is by boiling and salting the pods, then squeezing the beans out for a quick, tasty snack. The soft beans can also be removed from the pods and added to soups and salads. When eaten as a snack, the pods are usually placed in the mouth and the beans gently squeezed onto the tongue. The pod is then discarded. Unlike mature soybeans that are firm, these young, green soybeans are soft in texture and have a more pleasing taste. Edamame is a good source of digestible protein, which explains why it’s a popular snack among vegetarian athletes. A half-cup of these young beans yields 11 grams of protein. Soybeans are one of the few plant proteins in nature that provide all of the amino acids essential to human life. Soy protein has an estimated biological value (BV) of 74. The soybean is the most widely grown and used legume in the world. Soybeans provide an antioxidant boost from inherent natural chemicals called isoflavones. Isoflavones are a class of phytoestrogens — plant-derived compounds with mild estrogenic activity. The fatty acids present in edamame are considered heart-friendly. They can lower serum cholesterol, reduce platelet stickiness and elevate (good) HDL cholesterol. Soy is a viable source of omega-3 fats. In addition, each half-cup of edamame has 4 grams of soluble and insoluble fibre. Soy fibre encourages greater satiation, helps stabilize blood sugar, and keeps the tummy feeling fuller longer. Edamame can be found in the frozen section of most grocery stores. Instead of reaching for a bag of potato chips, cheese twists, roasted peanuts or chocolate bar, grab a bag of frozen edamame and satisfy yourself the healthy way.

Garlic Edamame

One 16 oz. bag frozen edamame 6 cloves fresh chopped garlic 4 Tablespoons unsalted butter ¼ cup Bragg’s Soy 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Make edamame according to the package directions.

In a saucepan or fry pan add chopped garlic, butter and Bragg’s soy; sauté on medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes. Strain edamame and rinse with water, then add edamame to pan with garlic mixture. Coat the edamame in the mixture and heat for 1 minute and sprinkle with garlic powder. Pour into individual bowls making sure to add the garlic sauce over the edamame. Use an additional side dish for the discarded pods.

Serving suggestion: Add crushed chilies for more heat.

Vegetables of the Sea Do you eat seaweed regularly? If not, you may want to add it to both your dinner and detox programme. Vegetables of the sea are just as vital to your health as vegetables grown on land. In fact, ounce for ounce, they are up to 20 times higher in es‑ sential nutrients than land vegetables. Sea plants both extract and absorb minerals from ocean water and then miraculously convert them from unavailable inorganic substances to avail‑ able organic minerals that our bodies can use for overall health. By John Austen

E

dible seaweed (not all are!) is one of the richest sources of vitamins and minerals including iodine, selenium, iron, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, beta-carotene, vitamins E and B. Its unique dietary fibre has been linked to both cancer prevention and the reduction of stroke-inducing blood clots. Seaweed’s natural digestive enzymes help the body’s metabolic and digestive systems, soothing a sensitive or troubled digestive system and aiding constipation and gastric bloating. Topically, it promotes healthier skin, hair and nails. Seaweed is also used to detoxify the body from waste, toxins, heavy metals and even radiation exposure; the human body has a very similar composition to the ocean and seaweed is the ocean’s detoxifier. Seaweed has protective effects against liver disease and its antioxidants may help prevent aging and other diseases through its ability to scavenge free radicals. Sea vegetables provide organic iodine, which is crucial for a healthy thyroid. Seaweed has been used in Chinese and ayurvedic medicine for centuries, and only became popular in North America after modern research was able to show its benefits. Kelp in particular, with its balance of natural iodine with other minerals, vitamins and trace ele-

ments, has been shown to be a body balancer, promoting adrenal, pituitary and thyroid health. The absorbability of organic iodine in liquid kelp can assist in normalizing thyroid disorders, obesity and lymph system congestion. It effectively detoxifies and helps to purify the blood. The kelp species laminaria digitata produces the highest levels of organic iodine and other nutrients, including over 50 minerals and trace elements, 22 amino acids and several other organic vitamins and digestive enzymes. Laminar‑ ia digitata is an arterial cleansing agent, creating healthy blood vessels and reducing deposits in the arteries while restoring their elasticity. It also strengthens the circulatory system and helps to lower cholesterol. Liquid kelp, which is odourless and almost tasteless, can be effective for weight loss by helping to eliminate excess stores of fat and fluids. Its easily absorbed nutrients provide energy and stamina, boost the immune system and act as viral protectors. Though kelp is one of the most well known varieties, you can also discover the benefits of dulse, kombu, arame, wakame, nori and sea palm. Consider trying these wonders of the sea, which for thousands of years, have been a mainstay in the diets and detox plans of civilizations around the globe.

When Bladder Surgery Goes Wrong By Nick A. Jerch

T

he Hamilton Spectator daily newspaper wrote an informative article with the headline “When Bladder Surgery Goes Wrong” stating that many women who have surgery to stop their incontinence have problems later on. The article says: “More than 1,000 reports of serious complications from nine surgical mesh manufacturers over three years led the FDA to put out its alert in October 2008.” Despite the warning, these surgeries are still performed daily because the surgeons are recommending them as their “gold standard.” This has ignited a debate about the safety of using surgical mesh for gynecologic surgery. The problem is that surgeons don’t know about natural herbal remedies that are available that will stop bladder infections, overactive bladders, UTIs and incontinence, often within a few days and without negative side effects. Tonics and teas made with potent herbal ingredients are easy to consume – often requiring only one cup per day – are pleasant tasting, and cost a tiny fraction of what surgeries do. Herbs including cranberry, goldenrod, marshmallow root, nettle, parsley, rosehips, uva ursi and willow herb have been proven effective at eliminating all of these symptoms. Reduce needless suffering and embarrassments. Having to wear pads or diapers is bad enough. However, if surgery goes wrong, women may have to take pain killing drugs, as the article says, which may be worse than having to deal with incontinence. It should be standard practise for doctors to recommend natural herbal remedies before initiating such extreme solutions as surgery. There is no harm in trying, and a waiting list for performing the surgery often leaves patients with time to try other solutions. Your doctor may suggest Kegel exercises, which may help, yet some women continue the exercises for years with no noticeable improvement. Men who have urinary problems due to swollen prostates can get relief within days with herbal teas, too. These powerful herbal remedies can stop “the day and night bathroom rushes” and the burning sensation while urinating — an inflamed prostate may cause a bladder infection, which creates the burning. Teas containing herbs including chamomile, cinnamon, cranberry, damiana, willow flower, ginseng, red peony, saw palmetto, lavender and stinging nettle can remedy burning, urgency, frequency and dribbling, in most cases within a week. If prostate surgery has been recommended, try herbal teas and tonics before undertaking surgery. Prostate surgery may temporarily or permanently cause incontinence and may also cause impotency. A relaxed prostate will not only let urine flow freely again, it may also permit spontaneous blood flow to the penis for firm erections. The Johns Hopkins Medical School newsletter writes there are 40 million women and men who are incontinent in the US alone, often resulting in having to wear pads or diapers. Natural herbal solutions have helped thousands of women and men to live a normal life again, without embarrassment of wet clothing, costly surgeries, pain, and lost work days.
