URBAN STRATEGIES

SITUATION In Bukit Mertajam, the density of Chinese temple and BM wet market is relatively high, the activities we have found there are restaurants, shops, suppliers, morning markets and religion programs. There are mostly restaurants around landmarks to attrack tourists, but the simple activities do not allow tourist visit

or stay longer in Bukit Mertajam. Lack of job opputurnities, no recreational activities or parks, people become bored and looking for opportunities to leave, which leads to the knowledge, experience, skill from old generation are lossing with the outflow of young generation.

URBAN STRATEGIES

TECHNICAL SKILL There are some people with professional art & handcraft skill in Bukit Mertajam, such as clay pots and bead embroidery art, which can be said to be a symbol of unique local style. The profession should spread to next generation, but in the situation happening, it will be a problem if there is no successor take over the technical skill.

SEQUANCE & CONSEQUANCE – AN INTERGENERATIONAL EPISODE

– — FLOW GALLERY — –

FLOW GALLERY is a four-storeys building in Bukit Mertajam, its programs are focus on the intergenerational that the site lacks. The theme of FLOW GALLERY is to inherited the old-age generation technic, just like the flow of water, spread to the next generation that will never be lost. It is also a gathering space for the old town community, which can increase local’s social life and improve the development of Bukit Mertajam..
