Design It Yourself 2013: Prototips

4

prototype: original, models, precedent, first, example, standard, paradigm, archetype, mock-ups, dummy. Now into our third year, Design It Yourself is an annual design conference and festival based in Surabaya which is designed to capture and disseminate factual and contextual design dialogues in Surabaya. First held in 2011, DIY holds on to the belief that design is a discipline, method, in the spirit of innovation and problem solving that can—and should—be enjoyed, and applied by and to all levels of society. After trying to map out our conditions in the first year, and collecting various tactics in the second year, in this third year of DIY, we believe it is a good time to look at the ideas manifest in the form of a prototype(s). Prototype as the first form of blueprint ideas in our heads is the best way to try out the idea and let it interact with the reality and conditions on the ground. The spirit of prototyping does not deal with the idea of perfection, but in the spirit to start something through concrete actionable steps. Turning an originally

abstract idea to be something affordable, doable, experienced, and—to some extent— relatively measurable. Prototips is about tactics and tips towards richer processes in producing prototypes, so that failures are not too painful, while rooms for losses fuel us towards progress. All of course without losing the spirit of daring to fail through a process of repeated experiments. DIY 2013 invites you to get together to experiment, laugh at failure, get back to the drawing board and see the ideas in the head becomes more real and interact with the surrounding reality. Time to use and dirty your hands—and mind—with prototips!

Analog Riot SET-ARA x WAFT-LAB Sunday, 13 October 2013 Surabaya Town Square

When we were asked to help the DIY Prototips team to arrange the layout of the DIY Fair, we immediately think of the word “experiment”. Here is the chance to experiment, to give meaning to visual play and perception. By using coloured duct tapes, we create 2D lines to create the optical illusion of 3D geometrical forms, thus involving tenants in an interactive environment. The gate is designed using 600 cardboard boxes, in reminiscence to pixelated game, which Helmi then responded with his electronic art. The electronic artwork created for the gate is a development of Atari Punk Console (commonly shortened to APC) which is adding the variety of capacitor value to get more various tones. APC is a popular circuit that utilizes 555 timer IC or 556 dual timer IC. It was named APC by Kaustic Machines crew because its low fidelity sounds resemble classic Atari console games from the 1980s, with a square wave output. Because of this, the artwork becomes a response of environment design created by SET-ARA that brings the souls of retro game. SET-ARA Founded and based in Surabaya, Indonesia on December 10, 2011, in response to the growing need for a more open, multidisciplinary approach to foster innovation and creativity in city making processes, SETARA is a collaborative forum for designers, creatives & activist from other discplines, urban thinkers, and anybody with a concern

Talk: Craftivism (Craft + Art + Activism) Thursday, 24 October 2013 18.30 - 21.00 Ore Small Business & Cafe Jl. Untung Suropati 83, Surabaya

How does hobby and craftivism bring about the means and conditions through which alternative values and ways of living can be imagined and shared, and practical examples for change defined and materialised? There is an increasing resurgence of amateurs and makers who, informed by peers, individual life experiences and expertise, are quietly active as they open up new channels of value and exchange by engaging in alternative craft economies and harnessing assets in often surprising, productive ways. Tarlen here will talk based on her experience managing an alternative bookstore, hobby clubs and an annual craft festival, Crafty Days. Free and open for public.
