CS Lewis's Narnia Series to Return to Big Screen with The Silver Chair Producers have named Joe Johnston, previous Captain America director, to take the helm on bringing the magic of Narnia back to viewers. News about The Silver Chair directorial decision hit media outlets approximately seven years after the last Narnia installment made it into movie theaters, creating plenty of discussion fodder for fans. The newest film, which is still some way off, is being produced by Douglas Gresham, who is CS Lewis's stepson. Other entities involved in the film at this point include the CS Lewis Company, Entertainment One and the Mark Gordon Company. Gresham told fans online that serious development work can begin now that a director has been named. Fans have waited a long time already; the original announcement that The Silver Chair would follow The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in theaters was made in 2013. David Magee, who worked as a writer on Life of Pi, Finding Neverland and Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, has been announced as a screenwriter on the project. The Silver Chair was the fourth novel published in the Narnia series, but it falls sixth in the timeline of events in the story. Between the events of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and those in The Silver Chair, only a year has passed in England, while decades have passed in Narnia. That time difference likely means that Will Poulter, who played Eustace Scrubb in Dawn Treader, won't be the right age to reprise his role in The Silver Chair. No casting or story decisions have been made known at this point, however. CS Lewis wrote the Narnia series as both a fantasy adventure for children — and readers with the wonder of children — and as Christian allegory. The books are full of messages about grace and discipleship, but those messages never overtake the enjoyment of the story — something that encourages readers from all over the world to enjoy them. The original movies in the series were met with varied critical receptions, but they all performed well at the box office and in subsequent home video sales. Comments from Gresham and Mark Gordon indicate that The Silver Chair film is several years or more away from theaters.
