Interpreting Wasteland as an Oasis

Shifting landscape is a result of perception towards the landscape. It derives voids between people and landscapes over the period. India is rapidly evolving but somewhere living environment is disappearing. The natural systems have become sparse; linkages are fading away in the case of Gandhinagar city, Gujarat,India. The bureaucratic data are defining open spaces as “wastelands” to generate revenues. These natural pockets act as an oasis and common lands. City - people - the landscape is not just for survival but for shared identity, meaning, and dwelling. Can these varied perceptions be seen as void? Hence, we need to understand Wastelands as Voids as an Oasis sensitively. The vision is to refill the voids lying due to the perception towards open spaces as wastelands. Aiming to bring back values and strengthen linkages by wholistic approach and make it more diverse. Also acknowledging and integrating existing nature and hybrid systems“. The larger strategies consist of conservation + acknowledging existing + reinterpreting common lands + re-establishing linkages. Later one can infer how the landscape changes - perception changes. The process of the research & design in brief as follow: #1. Perception of open spaces. #2. Systemic understanding of interlinked natural and hybrid systems. #3. The wholistic approach with factors of balance is Ecology + Economy + Socio-culture. #4. Categorizing open spaces as landscape resources. #5. Tracing and investigating linkages of common lands in 2003 #6. Changes in linkage in 2020. #7. Lost linkages in 2020 ( Yellow patch ). #8. Tracing existing and lost linkages of a transect 1. #9. Existing conditions of a transect 1. #10. Proposed masterplan based on proposed modules to strengthen linkages in forms of nodes, buffer, and movement corridors. #12. Investigation/Site analysis of demonstration linkage. #12. Strategies for demonstration linkage. #13. Proposed key idea of linkage of common lands based on strategies/program. #15. Proposed plan & sections based on existing conditions. Landscape changes - Perception changes. It is important to bring sensitivity in landscape. Not defining land with any generic terms makes it common. Commons are that rare spaces that represent equality in terms of status, rights, or opportunities. Commons have always been driven and shaped by people. People give an identity and values to the land as socio-cultural commons. Common needs to stay commons and not taken over by any ownerships. The design provides a foundation that allows people to create and carry out commons as shared ground with nature and culture. A sense of open access to this land will give that opportunity to give an identity to shared grounds to make it better in quality. Now commons are not just shared natural resources but include opportunities of urban elements. “ Acknowledging and appreciating what is existing and finding opportunities out of it will spread more awareness. “
