Byard Art is proud to present There & Back Again. Due to circumstances outside anyone's control, the AAF New York 2020 was postponed. This meant that our beautiful artworks, after making it all the way across the pond, got turned straight around and ended up right back in our gallery. This well-travelled and original collection is in pristine condition and is available to view in this catalogue and online. And for those who want to 'try before they buy', we would like to present to you our partnership with augmented reality app Art Visualiser, allowing you to visualise art in perfect scale on your wall without having to take it home first. Prefer to view in person? With full safety measures in place, we will be open to the public from Monday June 15th. We can't wait to welcome you back into the gallery. Remember, we ship worldwide, with tax exemption for anything outside Europe.

Tommy Carlsson

Tommy Carlsson's artwork is a reflection on his fascination with the realism in northern European sixteenth and seventeenth century art. For several years his painting has concentrated on the precise depiction of interactions between materials, pressure sources and light and shadow. The artist subtly marries photo-realism with painterly texture and freedom, in the creation of these evocative works. Tommy lives and works in Sweden. He regularly participates in solo and group exhibitions worldwide.

Gerdine Duijsens

Gerdine Duijsens is a Dutch artist based in Amsterdam, whose recognisable and strongly stylised work has generated a steadily growing club of aficionados worldwide. Gerdine's work is a synthesis between the figurative and the abstract. Her free and painterly style works well with the often inebriated characters she depicts. These gluttonous socialites are shown mid-party; slurping oysters and huge piles of strawberries or demanding excessive quantities of champagne. Dining scenes have now become Gerdine's trademark, but she is also known for her fully abstract works, as well as depictions of animals. Her animals are dynamic and powerful, the direct opposite to their comically sloppy human counterparts. Gerdine's work is housed in permanent collections in the Bijenkorf Amsterdam, Rotterdam den hag Eindhoven and Maastricht Galleries. She exhibits in galleries and art fairs worldwide.

Waller Hewett

Creative design partnership Ruth Waller and Lee Hewett explore their fascination for interior textile surfaces, producing impressive installations and bespoke pieces. The duo have combined their areas of expertise to create work that crosses the boundaries between art, design and craft. The artists' interactive and playful sculptural pieces are called 'Pollywobbles'. Their work is designed to be touched, with each moving felt ball setting off the next, to create a textural kineticism. Ruth and Lee studied at the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design, with Lee completing his Masters in Product Design in 2004, and Ruth obtaining her Masters in Textiles in 2000. The pair have shown work at the London Craft Fair at Somerset House and the Lakeside Arts Centre in Nottingham, and regularly exhibit their work at art fairs in London and abroad. In 2006 they were awarded Best In Show at the London Craft Fair, and received the Award For Excellence at the British Craft Trade Fair in 2005.

Sally-Ann Johns

Born in London and now residing in Edinburgh, Sally-Ann Johns studied Design and Craft at Gray's School of Art at Aberdeen, graduating in 1999. She went on to receive her Masters and Postgraduate Diploma in Product and Furniture at the Edinburgh College of Art 2007. Her work plays on the reflective qualities of gold leaf. Her gold-backed drawings are boxed into deep frames that she makes herself, capturing the luminescence of the gold, and inviting the viewer to imagine a whole other world within the case. Her stand-alone images constantly change with the effects of the light. The result is a magical drawing captured in reflected light. Sally-Ann has produced light installations for Cafe 52 in Aberdeen and the Bongo Club in Edinburgh, and has hosted a number of solo exhibitions at venues in both cities. Byard Art have showcased her art at major art fairs abroad and at our Cambridge gallery.

Antoine Josse

“I imagine my paintings and sculptures as the moments of a story and it's up to you to create the whole story. There are several different scenarios, and that's what I appreciate: the diversity of your looks. You are an actor of this exhibition: Look! Imagine! Speak! Exchange your opinions! A work exists only by the spectator's gaze, my paintings exist only thanks to your imagination. French artist Antoine Josse's paintings are known for their atmosphere, evocative colour and tumultuous skies. His artwork expresses an irrepressible desire for lightness, escapism and the ability to dream the impossible. The presence of human beings immersed in these dream-like landscapes convey a unique charm to the artist's work. These minuscule beings exist in a desolate and dangerous world where humour is balanced precariously with threat.

Sophie Verger

Sophie Verger was born in Paris in 1953. As a teenager, she attended The Academy of La Grande Chaumiere and evening art classes at Montparnasse 80. During the 1970s she studied at the Academy of Art Roedrer, as well as the school of Nissim de Camando. Sophie's long-term passion for sculpture is formed at the latter during drawing workshops at the Bourdelle Museum. At the Ecole des Beaux-Arts she meets the sculptor Etienne Martin, who strongly encourages her to continue in her study of the medium, putting her on the path to follow a classical education at the Favrat Studio. She goes on to open her own studio where she models, draws and organises her own exhibitions. Over the years, Sophie's work has spanned many different genres. Amazed by an exhibition of fifteenth century German sculpture at the Louvre, she begins modelling draped Madonna-like figures with animal heads dressed in big drapes, which she shows at the 1995 Whitstable Festival in the UK. Her first large-scale show takes place in Chateau de Grouchy in Osny, France. In 2000 she wins an award for her animal themed work in the Lille exhibition Sculpture and Garden. This theme gradually becomes a source of inexhaustible inspiration for the artist and is a subject she continues to focus on today.

Helen Ward Helen Ward is a Bristol based artist and designer. Having graduated from UWE Bristol in 2001 with a graphic design degree, she started working as a paper engineer making pop-up books while training as a traditional bookbinder. Nowadays, Helen works from home on her dining room table, armed with a scalpel and a very large stack of paper. The original idea for her paper entomology artwork came from acquiring a collection of Victorian hand marbled paper during her time working at the bindery. “The papers were all just so beautiful, I had to have them and I hoarded them in a box for years before I knew what I was going to do with them all!” Some of the patterns in the papers reminded her of butterfly wings, and so the idea progressed. Helen has since exhibited her work at a number of venues across the UK, as well as taking part in shows all over the world. She says she will never get bored of cutting the intricate pieces as the paper is all so beautiful.“I am just so happy to give it a new lease of life, rather than it all rotting away never to be seen again. I feel so fortunate to have such wonderful examples of traditional craftsmanship and it's brilliant to be able to share them in this way.” Alongside her artistic practice she designs stationery, giftware and children's toys for major UK retailers. She regularly exhibits her Paper Entomology work internationally and in several galleries across the UK.

Chris Wood

Chris Wood's canvas is glass and her medium is light. She uses one to manipulate the other, with subtle interventions carefully placed in the optical plane. She harnesses patterns of light, which recall ephemeral glimpsed moments in the natural world. As glass is used more and more predominately as a sheeted shield, it is perceived as a material that excludes the majority of people from huge corporate buildings or as a functional piece of tableware that we unthinkingly use everyday. Chris is interested in restoring the lyrical properties of glass and its ability to captivate. Her sculptures are simple arrangements of optically coated glass called dichroic, which was originally developed by the NASA space agency. Dichroic is a colourless material that filters and reflects wavelengths of light producing a huge variety of rainbow coloured shadows and projections. The intricate pattern arrangements create reflected and refracted coloured light across the aluminum plane. After studying Furniture Design at Middlesex University in the mid 80s Chris went on to study glass at the Royal College of Art, where she worked on architectural scale projects dealing with light and space. Chris produces innovative installations for gallery exhibitions and has shown extensively throughout the UK and internationally. She has worked on a number of high profile commissions. Chris' work is represented in a number of private collections as well as the Shanghai Museum of Glass.
