“ Relive the Fashion Show ”

I am always excited to work on the Fashion Show issue of Grapevine. Countless hours are spent by so many people to bring about the fantastic charity event. And for many who have worked so hard, the show itself seems to be over in a flash.

We have also included many other pages of our members and friends out and about enjoying Jakarta. And if you are compiling a list of things to do over the summer break, turn to page 28, where the ladies from A Journey Bespoke have compiled a shortlist of their favourite artisan markets.

So it is a lot of fun to be able to relive the events of the night through our Fashion Show Photo Album beginning on page 14. We hope you enjoy seeing just a bit of the fun, colour and spectacle of this years BWA Fashion Show.

Our next edition won’t be until August/September. But check out the BWA Facebook page regularly for all the events that will be on over the next few months. And have a great summer!

From the Chairwoman

With May rapidly coming to a close and stepping forward into June and July BWA will be changing gear for the summer months. In this edition of Grapevine you will see that May really was one of our busiest months on the calendar so far. On behalf of the committee I would like to give a sincere thank you to all of our members who come to support BWA events, often bringing friends along to introduce them to our Association. The committee is pleased to see that we have been actively “offering friendship and support for newcomers and members of the association”, one of the association’s main purposes. For those that attended the BWA Annual Charity Fashion Show “She’s a Lady”, I hope you had a blast. The hard work and level of commitment from all dancers and volunteers makes for a truly professional showcase of dance and music. This event raised much needed funds for our social welfare projects and their ongoing work. I would like to again thank this year’s Producer, Nathasja de Fluiter– de Boer for her dedication to the project. Early planning is already underway for 2018’s show and if you would like to get involved in any aspect of the biggest charity event for BWA, please do get in touch. June will be a month of “closing out” for many of us. For some it will be a temporary hiatus, a well-deserved summer vacation and for others the flight from the airport will be the last. If you are leaving Indonesia for a new posting or “back home” we would like to send you our best wishes for a smooth transition. BWA ladies will see many friends leaving and we will be wiping tears and raising glasses several times in the next few weeks. At our Ladies Lunch at Ristorante da Valentino we recognised the enormous contribution made by our previous Chairwoman, Laura Thompson who leaves for a mini sabbatical to the UK for the next 12 months. Also BWA’s very own Karen Turner will be sorely missed as she travels on to a new adventure and a fresh notebook to write down her “to do list”. We will continue to “… ask Karen” I am sure for a long while so please both of you don’tchange your email address or block us from WhatsApp contacts! Over the summer months BWA house will be closed from Monday 19th June and reopening Monday 3rd July. We will host a few coffee mornings for newcomers and members to connect and also craft classes are planned. Please email bwa@bwajakarta.org for more details and check our Facebook pages for updates. In the meantime safe travels to you all wherever you are headed and please keep in touch. PS … special thanks to BWA Editor Claire Ruberu and our Creative Associate for Publications Yustine Alvares (Dark Blue International) for once again delivering a brilliant Grapevine!

Social Welfare

Kampung Kids The BWA social welfare team has been supporting Kampung Kids for the last 6 months. Yayasan Kampung Kids was first set up in 1999 by a group of Expats and Indonesians in order to provide better nutrition for children within the local kampung. Over the years the organization has grown and Kampung Kids now has a number of programs that are offered to families within the local community. There are currently four main programs: 1) Health programs which include a clinic for under 5 year olds, family planning programs and an elderly program. 2) Nutritional programs providing daily cooked meals for school children, a feeding program for the elderly and a feeding program for students in Bekasi. 3) Educational programs, including playgroups and craft classes, scholarship programs, after school study groups, English lessons, computer classes and a pre-school. 4) A Micro Credit program that supports small local businesses within the community.

I am currently volunteering in one of the educational programs, running two playgroups every Wednesday morning within the kampung. The aim of these classes is to provide educational based play for preschool children between the ages of 4 and 6 years old. During each session the children learn some basic handwriting, letter formations and letter sounds. This is followed by an arts and crafts activity, singing and games. Despite the huge language barrier the children come into the classroom with great enthusiasm each week and we manage to successfully finish each session with a lot of hand gestures and laughing! There is always a need for volunteers so if you are interested in helping out in any of the areas above, do get in touch with the BWA social welfare team. By Sophie Edmunds

Feature

Delightful Derawan Island East Kalimantan The coral reefs that surround Derawan Island are bursting with colour and life. In fact, over 870 fish species live in these waters, from pygmy seahorses to giant manta rays. Derawan Island is part of a chain known as the Derawan Islands, which consists of six main islands as well as a number of islets and reefs, all set in the aqua blue waters of the Sulawesi Sea. From Jakarta, I took a short flight to Tarakan, East Kalimantan and then jumped on a speedboat. In around three hours I arrived at Derawan Island, a small sandy atoll and a truly magical place. Its tiny village includes a number of colourful wooden buildings, some of which are built suspended on stilts over clear, turquoise waters. I stayed at a little cottage homestay on a long jetty with the waters lapping under my cabin and a fishing pole at the door. There are several small dive stays as well. My welcoming committee consisted of a giant turtle who surfaced as I alighted on the jetty, raised its head in my direction and then seemed to accompany me as I walked towards the shore, its large flippers moving at a slow, rhythmic pace. I spent my first day walking around the local village, checking out a few dive shops, perusing the local cafĂŠ and restaurant scene (which took all of about 10 minutes) and checking out seafood restaurants for dinner. The owner of one flew out of the kitchen as soon as she heard of my arrival, and greeted me with lots of enthusiasm. 10

Grapevine - June/July 2017

She excitedly pointed out the round holes in the floor between the tables and showed me a stack of fishing poles at the ready against the wall. Yes, you can fish from the restaurant while you eat! Decision made, I had found my dinner spot. This super-friendly restaurant owner also told me she could organise a tasty packed picnic lunch as well as a safe boat and a good captain to take me out the following day. Second decision made. The next day I arrived at the jetty at 8.00am, grabbed my pre-packed picnic and some drinks and was off on a sturdy speedboat to Sangalaki. It took 1.5 hours to reach the island, which is a marine protected area and home to a turtle breeding program where turtle eggs are incubated, and the hatchlings are tagged and protected before release. The waters around Sangalaki provide a natural habitat for the manta ray, with divers naming the area “The Kingdom of Mantas”. These massive sea dwellers have a four-metre wing span, and I spotted a number breaking the surface of the water from the boat. Of course, I could not resist jumping overboard with my snorkel and mask to join them. They seemed undeterred by my presence, and it was a pure adrenaline rush to share some space with these magnificent creatures. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, I had another treat in store which required me to get out of the water and head inland. After a one-hour trip, the boat pulled up at Kakaban Island. My next adventure was to explore the magical Kakaban Lake (also known as Jellyfish Lake). This is a landlocked body of water raised above sea level. The lake contains trapped seawater. This has enabled life forms in the lake to evolve separately from those in the surrounding ocean over millions of years and has resulted in numerous unique species, many of which are yet to be identified. Diving into this peaceful lake, surrounded by lush forests, was an unforgettable experience. It did not take long before I found myself in the midst of a bloom of jellyfish. I was glad that my guide had already informed me that the four species of jellyfish which live in the lake have evolved to become stingless and harmless. It was the most surreal sensation swimming in a sea of graceful and beautiful jellyfish, some of them translucent, some large, some small and some ever so curious. Every five minutes I had one or two nibbling at my toes, almost as if wanting to make friends. I also spotted other fascinating marine wonders in the lake, including sea sponges, tubeworms, and sea cucumbers. In all, I spent a blissful three days at idyllic Derawan Island and surrounds. It offers a laid-back travel experience in a charming local village, with beautiful sunsets and fresh seafood feasts every evening, as well as spectacular day trips to neighbouring islands. Derawan is very accessible by plane and boat from Jakarta. I would visit now, before more developed tourism hits this place and enjoy the charms and wonders of a remote island off East Kalimantan.

Producer Report It is always a challenge to think about a theme for the biggest, most extravagant show on Jakarta’s expat calendar. Especially if it’s an anniversary - a 35th anniversary! But as I listened to Beyonce explain the title of her album Lemonade, talking about strong women, it suddenly hit me... A year before, I spoke with other expat women and learnt about their different struggles in Jakarta. And as I was listening, I could really divide them into two groups of women. The ones who felt stuck at home, hoping for something good to happen and the ones who actually stood up, chased their dreams and became active. It is this last group of women who become involved in their community, for example, in the BWA. Women from different ages, countries, cultures, religions and walks of life, working together to do astonishing things. Like organizing a big charity event such as the BWA Fashion Show. Full hearted and with unprecedented passion. This is the woman Beyonce was talking about! And so She’s a Lady was born - in honor of all those bad-ass ladies out there who chase their dream and become active. From September till May, volunteers from all parts of the community were working on the 2017 Fashion Show that will be remembered as a fantastic night. All ran smoothly and looked very professional from the dancing raffle teens, the waiter parade, the food, the drinks, the models from our community dancing like artists, the designer fashion show, right through to the raising of money to give to those who need it most for a better life. So many positive reactions from sponsors, the audience and the volunteers themselves! Now, after the success of the show, I think back to how we began as a group. We moved through a range of emotions - beginning with nervousness and thinking, “How are we gonna do it?” To a little bit more certain and saying, “We probably can do it” emerging with full confidence and telling everyone, “We are making the best show ever!” And we did. This year we had six dance groups on the stage and we created a real Fashion Show, just as it began 35 years ago! We ended the night with two amazing DJ’s who helped us forget all the stress of the past few months and celebrate our success by dancing the night away. I’m so proud of everyone who did their thing for the show. Thanks to everyone who jumped in to fill in the gaps and to everyone who joined us in celebrating our big success. So thank you to committee members, choreographers and dancers, you are the ones who made this all happen. And of course also a big thank you for our sponsors, the make-up artists, the hairdressers and the designers, who were integral to the night. And especially our guests, because without you we couldn’t have raised all the money to allow BWA to continue working with the very important charity groups in Jakarta, helping to improve lives. For 35 years the BWA has delivered the Fashion Show and it has the reputation as THE SHOW you have to join in or at least have to see once while living in Jakarta. And if you are out there, waiting for something good to happen, if you are a new expat or just made another move, or a resident of Jakarta wanting a great experience, write it down on your bucket list: The BWA Fashion Show 2018 is not to be missed! BWA Ladies’ Lunch? Yes Please, Count me in!

Social Diary BWA

Little did I know that it would be such a fancy affair. A lovely warm, friendly, host named Astrid welcomed us. Beautifully decorated tables added to the ambiance of this lovely restaurant. Great company of good friends, and getting to meet some lovely newcomers to Jakarta too. Hope the loud and constant chit chat and frivolity up my end of the table didn’t put them off! During the three and a half hours that we were there we were served excellently by an attentive team, with an array of gorgeous tasting and very well presented Italian delights. The meal comprised of soups, salad, pasta, and seafood specialties. Then the desserts, pannacotta being my favorite with a bowl shaped filigree caramelized sugar over the top. Superb! And not forgetting the all important wine. We also had the chance to thank and cheer Laura Thompson and Karen Turner for their many, many years of contribution to the BWA. Some beautiful flower bouquets were presented and hugs and kisses exchanged. Thank You to all at Ristorante de Valentino for a fantastic afternoon. See you again very soon. By Gillian Steer

Quiz and Curry Night

The Quiz and Curry Night was the first event that I planned as part of the events team and I enjoyed every little bit of it. It was really a team effort and we had a lot of fun planning it. My computer skills where challenged by learning to work with a new software for the flyer. So many options and so much cursing...but eventually it worked. I then booked our “sound man” Katno, who brought in microphones and other equipment. Phil and Rod agreed on being our Quizmasters and prepared all the questions, while Jackie helped along the way. People had a great time answering the questions and wracking their brains. Well done Phil & Rod on really testing the crowd. What is a traditional pub quiz without the Indian curry? Lucky for the hungry participants, Noreen had found the perfect sponsor in Koh-e-Noor, who generously prepared us a wonderful menu including Butter Chicken, Lamb Rogan Josh a mixed Veg Curry, Lentils (Dhal), Naan and more. It was so delicious. (If you missed the Quiz night, you can visit the restaurant or try their home delivery). Big Thank you to Perry from Koh-e-Noor. Louise jumped in as house manager to organize drinks and make sure tables were ready. The house looked like a good time was about to begin. Ibu Hani booked our barmen, took care of all table bookings and helped at the event. Pak Parmin prepared a platter & mousse to round out the feast. Anne from sponsorship helped me figure out the prizes and made sure Perry would get the thank you he deserved.

Social Diary BWA

Helen: Paolo and I have been to a couple of quiz nights and they are great fun. We have gone from ‘winning’ the wooden spoon to winning on Saturday night! This was all down to our secret weapon Mike Forester. Many thanks to our quizmasters who were hilarious and kept the evening from becoming too serious. Also, many thanks to Koh-e-noor for their generous and delicious food. We are looking forward to the next one! Kim: I found the atmosphere and the groups of people were really nice. My favourite topics were fashion and music but some questions were too British oriented for me - the non Brit! I was a bit lost. The Indian food was really good and there were many options including vegetarian food. It was my first Quiz so far with a big group of people. I enjoyed it a lot and would love to do more. Janine: A bottle of bubbly got the night off to a good start and a fantastic spread of Indian food sustained us as we reached the half-way point. The music, fashion and picture rounds were our quiz highlights. But we obviously need to swot up on politics, geography, literature and everything in between! By Diana Grieger

Karen supported me by answering a lot of questions, Helen dealt with cash flow and finally Heather made sure I didn’t mess up. And now I am sitting here, thinking hard about what to write about the night. I just had a really, really good time. But of course I would say that. So let’s ask others, shall we? It’s all about teamwork, right?

Coffee Morning

On May 2, BWA had a very busy Great British Coffee Morning (GBCM). What was the secret to enticing all those women through the doors of the BWA house? Was it the promise of excellent coffee compliments of Tanamera? Or the curiosity created by the unknown topic of the talk by Colliers International? Or the certainty of the friendly faces that are always present? Whatever the answer, those who came to the GBCM were glad they did. Gene Sugandy from Colliers gave us an entertaining insight into the working life of the people who keep the streets of Jakarta ticking - the street sweeper, the U-turn man, the o-jek driver, the house-to-house sewing machine man, and the baso (meatball) seller. And haven’t we all wondered before how long these guys work, how much they get paid and how they get by? Thank you Gene for an eye opening and very interesting look at another side to Jakarta. We will reproduce Gene’s presentation in an upcoming edition of Grapevine, so keep an eye out for that. As always, we enjoyed sweet treats, warm conversation and the opportunity to make new friends. Thank you Tanamera Coffee for the wonderful aroma of coffee that was as good to drink as it was to smell. By Claire Ruberu

Please mark your diaries for the following GBCM for the next few months: August 1 September 5 30

Girl’s Night Out

Social Diary BWA

Now that was a proper Girls Night Out. More than 50 ladies joined us for a fun filled evening at Eastern Promise in Kemang. There was a great mix of members and non members and everyone mingled well. I think one of the big advantages of belonging to the expat community in Jakarta is meeting people from different places. This evening was a great example of that, as we had ladies from the British, Indonesian, German and Russian communities ...and actually many more. Cindy Lauper is right and “Girls just want to have fun”, so at some point all the ladies met on the dance floor and we saw some serious dance moves. We also got a sneak peak into some dances of the BWA Fashion Show. Big “Thank You” to Eastern Promise who made us feel special by reserving the the Sports Bar exclusively for our use. Also they welcomed us with a special deal on drinks and with lovely snacks like vegetable samosas, curry puffs and chicken tandoori wraps. Only downside of the Girls Night Out is the risk of being a bit tired the next day. But don’t let the stop you from enjoying the next one! By Diane Grieger Grapevine - June/July

BWA Spring Bazaar The word was out, the BWA Bazaar was coming! Friday 19th May was blocked out in the calendar and the shopping lists began to be compiled. This was to be the last big spend up before the summer exit. On the day, the spring bazaar, held at the Grand Kemang Hotel was bursting with 120 vendors and the main room was awash with colour. From beautiful batik silks, soft leather purses, sparkling crystal jewellery, to one of a kind hand made quilts, the bazaar had everything one could want from across the archipelago. “The spring bazaar attracted 20 new vendors, including Borneo Chic and House of Diamonds who both offer gorgeous hand crafted goods that are produced ethically and in a sustainable manner. It seems that we attract new people with new products to offer at each bazaar we organise, said Leah Sudarto, bazaar coordinator. The room was buzzing from the 9am opening and up until the 3pm finishing time, more than 460 shoppers, browsed, chatted and opened their wallets with delight. The cake stall, which donates all takings to the BWA charities was busy all day, thanks to the generous baking friends of the BWA. Thank you to all our fantastic volunteers who bake and sell cakes, sell raffle tickets and generally run around to ensure its success, and to our main bazaar sponsors - Asian Tigers and Colliers International. MONKEYS ! I want to discuss rabies again, but I decided to call this newsletter monkeys. As a healthcare provider we cannot warn you enough about rabies and monkeys! Although you might think it is rare in Jakarta, we find that you are at risk if you are not protecting yourself. Monkeys can spread rabies! There might not be a lot of monkeys in Jakarta but you might meet them on other islands… Monkey bites and scratches are quite common in Bali. Monkeys are not shy and will often try and steal food from you. Even the smallest monkey bites or scratches can be very nasty as they have the potential of transmitting not only rabies but also the herpes B virus.

What to do? After any potential risk contact you should wash the wound with water and soap for 10-15 minutes. After this you should see a doctor as soon as possible to start the exposure prophylaxis which includes human rabies immunoglobulin. This antibody injection locally into the wound and a course of four into the upper arm. Immunoglobulins give some immediate protection while waiting for the rabies vaccines to start working. Immunoglobulins are very expensive (You might need a few vials costing thousands of dollars) and they are NOT available everywhere and you may have to fly elsewhere where this is available (Singapore or Bangkok). In Jakarta it is extremely difficult to obtain the immunoglobulins. Another option is to have a course of rabies vaccines before you are bitten. This is called a pre exposure prophylaxis. This is a course of three vaccines. Two booster vaccines are still required in case you get bitten. These vaccines are easily available in Jakarta and cost less than 250.000 rupiah.
