do so. But it’s important to remember the weaning worksheet won’t be generated until calving records are complete. Note: Remember, request all needed AI certificates before you begin registration to prevent registrations from being held in the system. Birth weights Birth weights are optional; however, if one birth weight is turned in, then all calves in the calving group must have their actual birth weight reported or a calving ease code specifying otherwise (dead, aborted, etc.). To make your birth weight data more meaningful, weigh the calves within 24 hours of birth. If possible weigh all calves with a scale or an industry accepted birth weight tape (estimates are NOT acceptable) and be sure all calves whose dams were similarly managed are kept in the same contemporary group. Reference the contemporary grouping section (pages 16-17). If only a portion of birth weights in a calving season are reported, the weaning worksheet will be delayed until all birth weights are turned in. The portion of birth weights that are reported won’t be included in the genetic evaluation until the remaining birth weights are reported. No birth weights submitted By not submitting birth weights, registry certificates will be generated with pedigree estimate EPDs and the weaning worksheet will be generated at the time of application. Birth weights can be reported later on the weaning worksheet with weaning records or on the birth performance page of the online register; however, all birth weights are still required for Whole Herd TPR compliance. Calving record or reproductive status For every cow enrolled on the herd inventory a calf must be reported as registered or unregistered. Doing so allows for calculation and compilation to the breed database of accurate reproductive measures. If a cow doesn’t have a calf to report be sure to use the appropriate reproductive status (calving ease code) to indicate a reason why the cow doesn’t have a live calf. Crossbred calves If a female on inventory is bred to a bull of another breed the calf should be reported to give credit for calving. Leave the sire field blank and record the calf as unregistered. Birth weights are only required from the purebred calves for Whole Herd TPR compliance. Birth weights can be turned in on crossbred calves but they won’t ratio with the registered calves. They will only receive an adjusted birth weight.

 Members using MyHerd need to leave the sire registration number box blank when reporting crossbred calves as unregistered. The system won’t recognize anything but an actual Hereford registration number in the sire box. ET calves ET calves aren’t required to have any performance data reported but if it is reported they will incur a $5.50 per head recipient inventory charge. ET calves are excluded from the genetic evaluation and they’re not indexed against natural or AI calves. However, if an ET calf is reported out of a “known” 9
