The Breedings’ champion prospect steer is a son of BR DM Sooner 8043 ET, weighed 692 lb. and had a WDA of 2.37. Savannah West, Channing, Texas, showed the reserve champion prospect steer, a son of BR Summit 9139 that weighed 622 lb. for a WDA of 2.48. At check-in, ultrasound data was collected on the progress steers, including ribeye area, backfat thickness

and marbling score, and a yield grade and carcass weight were estimated. Based on that data, Lauren Prill, Wichita, Kan., earned champion carcass steer honors with her 1,234-lb. steer LKP SJP Y32 Hoss W44 by TH 223 63N Hoss 504W ET. The steer scanned with a ribeye area of 18.8, .33 backfat, 4.63 marbling score with a calculated .92 yield grade and a carcass weight of 765 lb.

The reserve champion carcass steer was shown by Trevor Schultz, Columbus, Neb. His Purple Currency 24U ET son weighed 1,290 lb. and scanned with a 16.2 ribeye area, .32 backfat and a 4.05 marbling score, resulting in a 1.86 yield grade and 800-lb. carcass. Jensen, Howes Show Winning Bulls C

ody Jensen, Courtland, Kan., exhibited the grand champion bred-and-owned bull and Karey Howes, Taneytown, Md., showed the reserve champion at the 13th annual VitaFerm® Junior National Hereford Expo in Grand Island, Neb., July 6. Judge Charlie Boyd Jr., Mays Lick, Ky., sorted 78 bulls to name the champions and said, “I have judged numerous national shows and junior nationals, and I can say without question: this is the deepest set of bulls I’ve had the opportunity to judge in a long time. These bulls are extremely sound and good footed with extremely good testicles.”

Selected grand and division V champion was KJ CJJ 618U Chevy 454Y, a March 2011 son of KJ HVH 33N Redeem 485T ET that showed with expected progeny differences (EPDs) of birth weight (BW) 3.8, weaning weight (WW) 64, yearling weight (YW) 96, milk (MM) 23 and milk & growth (M&G) 55. Chevy is also owned with Beck-Powell Polled Herefords, Bainbridge, Ind., Everhart Farms, Waldron, Ind., and Kevin Jensen, Courtland, Kan. KAR FBF LCC Tebow 33Y was reserve champion in division V and reserve overall with Howes at the halter. He is a March 2011 son of CRR About Time 743

and showed with EPDs of BW 3.8, WW 55, YW 85, MM 18 and M&G 46. In the junior AI bull division, Tyler and Melinda Braun, Columbia, Ill., claimed the champion title with BPH 48W Kootenay 5Y by Remitall Kootenay 9K. The reserve champion banner went to Kimberly Markee-Behrends, Mason City, Ill., with OHF Red Durango 104Z by KCF Bennett Red House S330. This division is for bulls that are a result of participating in the NJHA Junior AI program that allows youth to receive free semen and certificates.
