Mona Loewen grew up in the Hereford business. Her father, Harold V. Hunter, had purchased his first bull, Dick Antone, in 1935 and started breeding registered Herefords in 1936 at the age of 18. Harold built a prominent herd, HVH Farms, that we renamed Loewen Herefords a few years ago. Harold served as Chairman of the APHA, bred several prominent bulls and had his first production sale in 1953. e night before that sale, it stormed and blew down the sale tent.

HVH Rollo Jr. 658 – A son of Rollo 6, born in 1956 and herd sire for Alfalfa Lawn Farms. One of the bulls that put HVH Farms on the map.

I, John, came into the family business when Mona and I married in 1960 and were given the pick of the heifers as a wedding gi. Harold, Mona’s brother, Losco, and I formed a partnership, HVH Farms, named aer Harold’s initials and our brand, which we still use today. Harold began a 25-year career in politics, first at the state level, eventually becoming chairman of the Oklahoma Republican party, then serving eight years in Washington D.C. in the Reagan administration. During this time, Losco operated the farm and I managed the cattle.

In 1979, I began working in finance aer serving as the executive vice-president of the APHA for two days. In the 1980s and 1990s, I was president of a multi-bank holding company and its banks, retiring December 31, 2000. During this time we maintained our cow herd and since that time have kept busy with the cattle. e Hereford business has been a way of life for our entire family. Mona grew up with every family vacation either visiting a cow herd or attending a Hereford event. Harold served on the APHA board as chairman. I was on the AHA, CHB and HYFA boards, and we both served as president of the Oklahoma association several times. Our sons, Ron and Bob, along with Mona as their driver, showed cattle at the first Polled Junior National Show. Our daughter, Jennifer, was National Queen of the APHA. Jennifer was selected as National Polled Hereford Queen in 1987, with grandparents Harold and Ruth Hunter, Mona and John.
