Hereford breeders host tours and field days. On the following pages are highlights of 2014 field days and tours that were reported to Hereford World staff.

California/Nevada Hereford Tour

The California/Nevada Hereford Association hosted a tour in Sonoma County on April 26. More than 85 Hereford enthusiasts were welcomed by Jim Mickelson and family of Sonoma Mountain Herefords, Santa Rosa, Calif. Jim is also president of Kunde Family Vineyards, Kenwood, Calif. Mickelson’s son Bobby, herdsman, provided the group with a cow herd and ranch tour. Marcia Mickelson and Christy Bradshaw, AHA education coordinator, gave an in-depth view of CattleMax and MyHerd.org programs. Kunde winery staff provided tours of the wine-making process. At the conclusion of the event, participants were treated to a Certified Hereford Beef ® tri-tip and wine dinner on the patio.

Illinois Hereford Tour

A nice crowd attended the Illinois Hereford Tour Aug. 23-24 in central Illinois. Hosting tours on Saturday were Stephens Hereford Farm, Taylorville; Sturdy Hereford Outlet, Rochester; Ostermeier & Meteer Cattle, Athens; and Prairie Rose Cattle, Sherman. West Wind Herefords, Edinburg; Bafford Farms, Blue Mound; and Loehr Hereford Farm, Peoria, welcomed attendees on Sunday. Numerous Illinois Hereford breeders welcomed attendees to their operations.

Iowa Hereford Breeders Tour

Iowa Hereford Association members and guests enjoyed a day of farm visits amidst the wet conditions left from late summer rains during this year’s Iowa Hereford Tour on Aug. 30. Around 60 Iowa Hereford Association members and guests, including breeders from Missouri, turned out for a day of fellowship and Hereford history. Tour stops included Black’s Herefords, Chariton, along with Offenburger Polled Herefords, Lacona, which brought a sampling of its herd to this location; Ohnemus Farms, Inc., Milo; Amos Hereford Farm, Indianola; and BAJA Cattle, Truro. A highlight of the tour was a stop at the birthplace of Polled Herefords near St. Marys and New Virginia.

MM Ranch, Chanute, hosted a tour stop which included lunch for the attendees.

Kansas Hereford Tour The tour made a stop at the birthplace of Polled Herefords near St. Marys and New Virginia. The parcel of land is the spot where the Gammon Barn originally stood before being moved to the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

Kansas Hereford breeders toured six farms and ranch operations in the Flint Hills region of the state Aug. 16-17. Saturday stops included Goedeke Herefords, McCune; MM Ranch, Chanute; and Evans Hereford Farm and Blackjack Herefords of Fredonia.
