Case Ranch Herefords First Annual Production Sale

Page 2

Dear Friends, Welcome to our first annual registered Hereford Sale. As far back as the mid 1930s my grandfather, Percival and wife Ruth moved with their son, Fred and two daughters, Henrietta and Helen to land he and his brothers inherited in west Texas. There they began to learn how to run a ranch. Deciding to work with cattle and sheep it wasn’t long until they chose Polled Herefords and with the help of neighbors started developing a registered herd. In the 1950s my dad Fred married Laura Nicholson (Nicky) and continued the development of the herd. In 1969, we sold the polled herd and started a horned Hereford herd since that seemed a better market for this area. My sister Caroline and I participated until the late 1970s when my wife Angela and I took up the effort with Mom and Dad. Angela and I had two girls, Tiffany and Kayla, who grew up to appreciate the ranch. Today Tiffany and our son-in-law Stephen Loyd operate the Case Ranch with Angela and me. Around the 1980s, dad and I thought of one day having a production sale here on the ranch which got as far as the slab that the new barn is built on today. Tough market conditions and drought were a couple of reasons for putting the idea on hold. When Tiffany and Stephen joined with us in 2016 we reconsidered the project. Thirty-nine of the bulls in the offering are from Case Ranch along with fifteen bred heifers. To help increase the numbers of cattle to be in the sale we invited BB Cattle Company to consign some animals for you to consider. If you look at any pedigree of our cattle you will see influence from that ranch located in Connell, Washington. They have twenty bulls cataloged along with as many females. This should help maintain uniformity in the offering. While BB Cattle Company has a major influence on our cattle’s genetics, we also have purchased herd bulls from across the United States. We are very proud of the quality that our herd bull battery represents. There are several bulls worthy of a registered breeders consideration. Ninety percent of the 2017 Case bull calf crop is cataloged. This ranch is very good for raising registered cattle. Mostly the acreage is on the top of the divide where the soil and grasses are strong and fruitful (when it rains) for cows with calves to thrive. For conditioning bulls, we start them on feed at weaning where they are in confinement shortly and then put on rough, hilly and rocky terrain on the west side of the ranch which helps develop them athletically. They remain on a well balanced feed ration thanks to K top J (Tim James and family’s) service next door. He also helps monitor the health of the cattle on feed. We would also like to thank Terry Loyd Construction, Los Caballos Veterinary Clinic, Blattner Construction, Divide Services, Cox Concrete, Priefert, Image Management, Tranzit Communications, McCoy’s, West Texas Steel, Palmer Feed and Supply, and Grogan Farm and Ranch for their support toward this effort. Special thanks to Deb Revolinski for all the important work she did to help us promote this sale. Hopefully you can attend in person or online to help us get off to a good start. Sincerely, Pete and Angela Case Stephen and Tiffany Loyd
