years of freewheeling
We have now outlasted answering machines, Pluto, and the Grateful Dead. (Of course, your answering machine never took you to Puglia.) For 50 years we’ve been slowing down to see the world. And except for making, perhaps, the occasional questionable judgment call in the 1980s (haven’t we all?) our evolution has been a spectacular ride. We’ve now traversed six continents and over eighty countries—journeys as astonishing, intimate, and immersive as sinking into a Japanese hot spring at dusk. We’ve laughed. We’ve sipped. We’ve teared up a little. We’ve commissioned the coolest-looking Bianchi bikes known to man. (In our opinion.) This is where most companies would say “and we have no intention of slowing down.” But that’s exactly what we do best.
To celebrate our 50th year, we’ve dipped into the B&R archives and put a fresh new spin on some of our all-time favourite trips. Look for this 50TH! indicator!
Since 1966
In our early days, people thought we were a little weird—even our travellers. So although we received a lot of praise, it tended to sound something like “I can’t believe this turned out so well” or “My husband thought I'd give up by day two.” Well, fifty years later, no one thinks we’re weird anymore. (At least, not to our faces.) Nowadays, it sounds more like “How on earth did you find this? This isn’t on my GPS” or “What do you mean, ‘climb over the fence, the hot spring is behind Otto’s house’? Is this even legal?” And we're only getting better. Our nomadic researchers continue to unearth the most innovative new chefs. The most dazzling paths. And the kindest, warmest locals nobody’s ever heard of. In other words, we're slowing down to see the world... even harder. Join us for the next leg of our century ride. Hope to see you on the road in 2016. —George & Norm

Burgundy
No one feels more passion for wine than Burgundians. It’s their bedrock. Literally—a maze of tunnels for cellaring wine lies beneath the soil. Since the Middle Ages, generation after generation have roamed the verdant fields—all in service of the venerable grapes Pinot noir and Chardonnay. A coy and capricious coquette of a plant, it draws guttural French curses from those who tend it. But beware: that wild Burgundian passion is contagious. It took us only one trip before we bought property.

Loire Valley
Loire’s castled countryside may sound ostentatious. But we’ve detected a rarer (and, in our opinion, richer) breed of nobility amongst the locals: character. Take Loire’s vintners, who hid wine from the Germans during WWII—and gifted bottles to Allied soldiers. Or servants of Le Rivau (where we’ll be staying, naturellement), who gave Joan of Arc horses in her moment of need. Or Henri IV, who weathered 12 assassination attempts but still showed up for work. Bluebloods? Perhaps. True blue? Definitely.

The sea has always been central to Normans. Their menu drips with butter and mussels (we know the best spots), their salt stockpiles were more fortified than a presidential motorcade, and one church even resembles a seafaring vessel (regular masons were scarce at the time). Perhaps that explains the locals’ salt-air kindness when history arrived at their feet. Wrote Norman army officer M. E. Lemaigre: “All you who have fallen on our soil, sleep in peace in our rich Norman earth... you are at home.”

Rest of France
They say the last words of François Rabelais, the great French satirist, were “I go in search of the Great Perhaps.” Amidst these climactic landscapes, it’s easy to pique your own French curiosity for going beyond: a lonely lighthouse the locals call “bout du monde” (end of the world), a 12thC pilgrimage site tucked precariously into a limestone cliff, plunging verdant views of a medieval abbey. Just let your B&R guide trail softly behind you—and slide an apéritif into your hand as you gape.

Provence It seems like a modest delicacy, but olive oil is key to Provençal life. For three months, the locals crush, spread, press and squeeze. Ten pounds of olives only produce one litre of their renowned oil. But in Provence, pleasure is worth the work—a lesson for more than just gastronomy. (See: B&R traveller Michael Hiller, who found himself cheered on by a silver-haired Frenchman dragging two poodles and gasping “Courage, courage!” as they both struggled up a fragrant-but-formidable hill.) Puglia
To understand Puglia, you must understand orecchiette. These “small ears” of pasta are cucina povera: the cuisine of the poor. But in the locals’ deft hands, they become decadent. It’s the Pugliese way: when ruled, they absorbed the best bits—from Saracen figs to Spanish orxata. When taxed unfairly, they constructed trulli dwellings to skirt the rules. And when travellers rarely visited, they welcomed B&R with open arms—and fed us until we wept. Humble, yet heavenly: that’s Puglia defined.

Northern Italy Northern Italy is a story of symbiosis—what scientists call mutually positive relationships between different organisms. Literally: Piemonte’s peerless truffles, which grow on aged oak roots. Poetically: Lake Como, a union of mountain and water, lovingly caressed by two opposite winds. Oenologically (gesundheit!): Verona’s Valpolicella wine, whose roots find stability in pebbled terraces. Spiritually: the Dolomites’ mountainous crags and whispering pastures. And personally: you and our local Italian friends, drinking it all in. DOLOMITES FAMILY MULTI-ACTIVE 50TH! 5 NIGHTS | RECREATIONAL SIGNATURE HOTELS – FROM $5,595

There’s something about limoncello. Made by the locals with the sfusato amalfitano—lemons twice the size of regular ones— and served chilled, its tartness is as youthful and insouciant as a coastal breeze. That spiritual refreshment is emblematic of Southern Italy—from Capri’s gorgeous Via dei Fortini path, which few travellers (except those in B&R jerseys) ever see, to Sicily’s blue lagoons. But beware the joyous abandon. Two B&R travellers who first met on this journey were engaged six months later.

Tuscany
With her romantic hills, Tuscany seems like the region of amore (love). But we think gelosia—jealousy—rings truer. It compelled Montepulciano’s successive owners to one-up each other, showering the town in artistic wonders. It convinced Bettino Ricasoli to move to the countryside, where fewer gentlemen could tempt his wife. (His ensuing boredom led him to experiment with a wine we now call Chianti.) And yes—it’ll make your frenemies wither when they hear where you’re going.

Whether it’s 7pm in Andalucia, when the whole town goes out for a traditional paseo (stroll), or spring in Mallorca, when the almond trees turn blush-pink with blossoms, this region is lush with poetic transformations. Our favourite metamorphosis? When B&R travellers become honourary locals. As our scout Telmo Barros gushed: “They took me right into their homes... I wasn’t a stranger anymore.” Come a traveller, leave a chrysalid. (Uh, the blissful, culturally immersed kind. Not the telepathic post-apocalyptic sci-fi kind.)

Mediterranean In the Mediterranean, the olive tree is more than just fruit-bearing foliage—it’s an icon. But unlike David Bowie or Madonna, it evokes the glory of seeing thousands of myth-laden islands strewn across the sapphire sea, the peace of red-roofed Dubrovnik after a painful past, and the abundance of our legendary spreads at monastery picnics (flaky morsels of melt-in-your-mouth tiropita, anyone?). They aren’t just trees—they’re centuriesold locals. Just the strong and silent type.

In 1817, something brilliant was invented here: the laufmaschine, a contraption meant to replace horses in times of scarcity. Nowadays, we call it a bicycle—and its classical aesthetic, efficient design, and contemplative nature could be this elegant swath of Europe’s operating philosophy. That deft engineering has inspired us personally: when we came here on our inaugural trip, we rode fixed-gears, slept in hay barns and gorged on schnitzel. Fifty years later, we’ll be floating in on Bianchis and sleeping in terraced suites. (Still gorging on schnitzel, though.)

It’s called wabi-sabi, and it’s a difficult sensation to describe— the sadness, peacefulness, and preciousness of our changing existence. It can’t be found in great sculptures, but it can be found in a chipped teacup. And it permeates this region: treehouses in Manuka groves, weathered temples, a humble bowl of rice, the gentle knowledge that none of this can last forever—and the quiet joy of experiencing it now. (When you find yourself gazing philosophically out of windows, just remember: we warned you.)

Nothing sums up this region quite like dāna-pāramitā—a Buddhist term for perfect generosity. The locals positively glow with warmth and welcome. (Special thanks to the residents of Hue, who helped 15 B&R travellers escape a crazy traffic jam last year!) See for yourself: dine with royal Vietnamese descendants, speak intimately with elders about the war, cycle past hordes of laughing children, or get a trunk-hug from a rescued elephant. Here, friendship flows as freely as the winding Mekong.

Some temples cling to the sides of mountains. Some have gold spires that rise like tufts of meringue. Some have surprise B&R feasts waiting (if you’re lucky). All echo the aching beauty, romance, and history of their people: from Rajasthan’s descendants of ancient Hindu warriors to Myanmar’s smiling fishing families. It just confirms our long-held hypothesis: the best way to understand this region is sitting cross-legged. Preferably with a bottomless cup of butter tea. Calories schmalories. When Spanish colonizers came to Latin America, they brought empanadas with them. Locals seized onto these humble pastries, transforming them with new fillings and spices—a mouthwatering fusion. In a way, it’s the story of Latin America itself: a fascinating exchange between colonial and indigenous cultures. Verdant Chilean vineyards. Amazonian footpaths. Lavish haciendas (with a particular fondness for B&R travellers). Frost-dusted trails through the Andes. And you, with a backstage pass.

When we say this land is defined by richness, we mean it literally. (See: Costa Rica, which means “rich coast,” or Peru, which the Quechua called “land of abundance.”) Culinary riches include death-defyingly good coffee, macadamia nuts, and fields of cacao. Cerebral riches include private tours of Mayan ruins, sacred Peruvian rituals with B&R friends, and contemporary art. As for emotional riches, we’re sure they’re already within you... but galloping, kayaking, swimming and ziplining as a family couldn’t hurt.

This region is our own giant backyard, and there’s nothing we love more than getting lost in it. No cultural totem escapes our attention: from British Columbia’s candied salmon (tastes better than it sounds) to Newfoundland’s shed culture (will crack you up) to Quebec’s finest curse words (should you ever need them). And there are show-stopping moments, too: grizzly bears smacking fish out of the rapids, rainbow-striped rock formations, and savouring Cab-Sauvs straight from the barrel.

In Morocco, mint tea isn’t just a beverage— it’s the cement of their society. Shopkeepers will refuse to talk business until they’ve poured you a cup, and even families without electricity, furniture, or an adequate roof will own a silver pot for serving it. Every ceremony has three rounds: bitter, strong, and sweet. The result? A slow, savoury awareness of each moment. The Berbers once said, “He who rushes is already dead.” Under a carpet of stars in the desert, aromatic cup in hand, we’ve never felt more alive. Southern Africa With 300 days of sunshine a year, rainbows are rare here. But they’re the perfect expression of this region’s spectrum of cultures, contrasting landscapes (towering dunes in Namibia, glittering saltpans in Botswana) and unparalleled biodiversity. There’s even a colony of jackasses (the penguins, that is). So while you may never see a rainbow through your open-air desert bedroom—which is fabulous, by the way—we promise: it’s there. Some regions require street smarts. Some require patience. Some require industrial-strength rainboots (we’re looking at you, Scotland). This one requires something softer, and less common: trust. It’s how we absorb its lush, inviting landscapes. It’s how we keep our cool while observing silverback gorillas up close—or eyeballing predators on a spine-tingling night drive. And it’s how the locals have lovingly moved forward together, despite their painful past. So relax your shoulders. Close your eyes. And let yourself fall.

Foodies Rejoice We’ve collaborated with the editors of SAVEUR to craft mouthwatering B&R journeys through key culinary hotspots—immersive bain-maries, if you will. Perfect for gourmands, gastronomes, epicureans, and shameless hedonists alike, these sojourns pair B&R's artistic sense of travel with SAVEUR's passion for food. (Just expect to wear a chef's hat, not a bike helmet, as your mode du jour.) Chiffonade with renowned chefs, haggle in bustling markets, meet the inspiring artisans behind every bite, and feast your eyes (and mouth) on the farm-to-fork process. Your digestif? A rosewater-infused bath at your Zen-infused hotel. Arrive feeling a little flash-seared. Leave utterly caramelized.

“The value added by our more than superb, amazing guides Alex and Abby made the cost of the trip worth every penny.” –Amy Sadoff
ABBY VAN OERS Fitness expert by day. Fine Belgian beer aficionado by night. Proud Dutchy. Hidden talents: Renaissance dancing, speed skating, sheep shearing. AGUSTIN CALVETTI 50% anthropologist. 50% hotelier. But also: restaurateur, trekking guide and polyglot. Oh, and blues guitarist. ALESSIO FRANGIONI Gifted carpenter. Restores aged Italian homes. Don’t need any cornices fixed? He’s also a trained veterinarian. (Handy when the camel breaks down.) ALEX GRAEFE Berliner who loves all things Tuscan. Spends his winters biking in New Zealand. Preternaturally kind-hearted. Has reportedly driven a stray dog home after it joined his walking trip. ALEX MALLORY Can cook “the best quiche of all time” for groups of 40. Does an effortless front flip (he learned it in China). Skis the Swiss Alps like a pro. Also, uh, very modest. ALICE VAN DER VOORT Can jabber away in six international tongues as though possessed. Works with schoolchildren in Laos. Dances on tables in Italy. ALVARO DIEZ Our super-athletic Spaniard. Member of his university triathlon team. Has run more marathons than anyone can remember. When not splashing water majestically onto his own face, prefers travelling off the beaten path by two-wheeled conveyance. AMINA ABDELJAWAD Six-language-speaking Swedish adventure-seeker. Loves to get down. Not just to the depths of Lake Malawi (she’s a seasoned diver), but on the dance floors of Andalucia too. ANGELO SCIMIA Has been spotted in Barcelona, Amsterdam, Paris, Rome, London and his native Italy. Still unknown: address of the top-secret gourmet restaurant he manages. ANTHONY KING Windsurfer. Marathon runner. Free-diver. Forest trekker. Around-the-world cyclist. Suspected adrenaline junkie. ANTHONY WEERSING Dwells in Hawaii living out the American dream: occasionally escaping to Japan. Knows traditional woodworking. Still gets giddy about Japanese culture and cuisine—hence his twinkling eyes. CHRIS GOODWIN Decided he’d rather be scaling Table Mountain in South Africa than playing solitaire in a plush corner office. Many B&R trips later, still terrible at solitaire. (There’s a lesson in this.) CHRISTINA NICK Rehabilitating cheetahs in northern Namibia. Or showcasing her worldrenowned sculpture at an art show in Hungary. Or... CHRISTOPHER LITT Stir-crazy cyclist. Has ridden clear across Canada. Conquered roads in France and Switzerland. Former pedicab driver. Don’t tell him we told you. CLAIR ROGERS A historic Piemonte village on idyllic Lago Maggiore, loved by Hemingway and overlooking Switzerland. That’s not a B&R trip. It’s just where Clair lives. No wonder we adore her. DANA QUINN A high-octane insurance consultant in a former life. Many, many B&R trips later, she’s savouring the slightly slower life in southern France. DANE TREDWAY Wandered from Cape Town to Katmandu. Returned to Toronto for a mild-mannered life of writing and photography. (Also: spelunking, skiing, scuba diving, trekking.) DANIEL BOWER Biked, snowboarded, scuba dived, mountaineered, bunjee jumped and Frisbee-competed across six continents. Still has practically all fingers and toes. DARIUS ARJANG Swaps teaching for guiding each summer. Can whip up the notoriously finicky Sachertorte on command. DEBBIE VANVAERENBURGH Just finished a one-year trip through Moscow, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Philippines, Taiwan and Indonesia. Her fave part? Teaching English to monks in Laos. Also: totally fierce surname. DENIS LUCCANTONI Former Olympian. Still has that golden glow. Spends the winters speed skating, teaching skiing in the French Alps, and being frustratingly down-to-earth. DIEGO GRAU Hails from a small Castilian town. Left a career in biology to join B&R. Says gushy, poetic things like “I found the pure happiness that the path brings you.” DOMINIC GIOSSAN Renaissance man (and possessor of five degrees). Has been hiking and biking in Brazil. Can say “Holy @#$%! Look at that bear!” in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French and Italian. ERIC SPONSELLER Has worked with HIV/AIDS affected kids in

Lesotho, baked bread in New York City, and run a successful artisan kombucha business in South Africa. We just had to have him. ERIK RUTHERFORD Is always living somewhere new: Paris, Toronto, Vancouver, Berlin. Still hasn’t been tagged with a tracking device. Despite multiple attempts. ERIN REED Veteran guide. Coined the classic B&R motto: “When you’re charged by a giraffe and have to dive from your bike into a bush of thorns, don’t climb back on right away. Wait a few minutes.” FANNY VIRET Worked with Doctors Without Borders in the Congo, cycled through Kyrgyzstan, and lives and studies in Lausanne. Drop by for mouthwatering croquembouche anytime. GIACOMO FANO Italian native. Has never spent a single day in an office. Can scale a cliff, but don’t bother asking him to fax a memo. Wrote a book about trekking through the Rockies. GIOVANNI BETTIO Native of Venice. Can both order nihonshu and apologize for the consequences in fluent Japanese. Our Okinawa surfing expert. GLYN MANWARING-JONES Got the travel bug’s bite as a kid, canoeing in northern Ontario. (On second thought, it may have been a mosquito.) Has lived in Montreal and Brazil, now brandishes a music degree instead of bug repellent. IRENA OSSOLA Hails from Northern Italy and Santa Fe. Road-hungry pro cyclist. Makes Batman look boring. JACOPO DI LORENZO Has hit up Kenyan missions, Australian horse farms and Thai beaches. Rome-born adventurer. Doesn’t crash a party—paraglides into it. JAMES BOYD Fearless climber. Prized in-house photographer. Studying with one of the great photographers of Spain. (Can get a terrific shot of saving you from a precipice.) JOHN BROOKS Born in Boston. Lives in France. Fell into guiding to prolong his stay in Europe. 20 years later, has settled in Burgundy. Manages a small wine domaine. (Good move, John.) JULIE MICHAUX Passionate. Spontaneous. Constantly makes new friends. Even atop a bike. And then paints portraits of them. KIM HESSION Favourite hobbies: backcountry skiing, lobster fishing, river canoeing, treeplanting and crossword-solving. Exhausting just watching her. LARA MATTIOLI Born-and-raised coastal Italian. Most comfortable with a glass of wine in hand and a salt water breeze at her back. Weirdly, so are we... LEAH HOWE 10+ years with B&R. Rife with delicious contradictions. Likes duvets silky soft, burrata homemade (in her home, that is) and Barolo right out of the barrel. LEWIS EVANS Can order coffee in five European languages. Is often served a crusty cheese sandwich, but is terrific at pretending that’s what he wanted. LORENZO SANTAMARIA Born in Sicily. Based in Copenhagen. A bit of a nomad. But has a Sicilian’s love of family...and, fortunately, includes fellow travellers in that category. LOTTIE WILLIAMS-BURRELL Can expand your theatrical talents while blowing your mind. Funny. Fascinating. And adorably named. LUCA PACCHIONI Was loaded into a camper van for a whirlwind Portugal trip at the age of eight. Now an Italian wanderer and aspiring Madrid architect. MARCELA CALDAS Colombia native. Architect. Designer. Lives in Paris and Barcelona. Rides horses in La Costa Brava. Could make a garbage bag look posh. MARCOS GRELLET Has spent the past 18 years as both a marine biologist and continent-hopping travel writer. Or as we describe it: cuddling dolphins and wildly wordsmithing. MARJOLEIN ROELEVELD Amsterdamborn. Sports degrees in theatre and mime. Refuses to pretend she’s trapped in a box. But after a few pints of Columbus ale... MARTIN TATICEK Trained as a teacher. Heart of a poet. Insatiable passion for new places, new people, new ideas. Careful: it’s contagious. NANCY TOWNS Lovable Spanish-speaking Hispanophile. Claims in a convincing tone that she loves biking Albanian mountain roads. In the winter. OSCAR BIEDMA The kind of athlete who pedals out of a Vancouver driveway one morning and ends up in Mexico. All of our guides are “avid”…Oscar is more like “ravenous.” PAOLO MARAGLIULO Native of Puglia. Came to guiding the old fashioned way: a

(Repeated in German, English, Italian, Portuguese, French and Japanese.) Now lives the hard life on Brazilian beaches. REMI LAHAUSSOIS Sculptor. Winemaker. Home-builder. Musician. Triathlete. Stop us at any time, Remi. RICHARD NUCCI King of the Alpine glaciers. Brilliant mountain trekker. Has organized bike expeditions all over Scandinavia and Europe. Obviously our soulmate. RICCARDO PASQUIN Born in a Venetian village. Wandered through Ireland, Bolivia and Portugal. Party trick: getting teary-eyed over glasses of Giuseppe Mascarello about il bel paese (the beautiful country). ROB GRIEVE When dragged down from the mountain, can be found planning and guiding trips in his native New Zealand. Infuriatingly charming accent. RON JARUS Travelled five continents. Ask him for directions in English, Mandarin, Hebrew or Italian. (Or don’t: he’s equally delightful to get lost with.) SAKIS MITSOULIS Master’s in fine art. Happily steeped in the finer things in life (probably how he ended up in the luxury boating industry). Eat very, very well when you’re with Sakis. SARAH LEWIS Master’s from the London School of Economics. Fluent in five languages. Has visited more countries than a diplomat. Morgan Freeman could narrate Sarah’s life. SCOTT MCEWEN Ditched a career in Canadian television to pursue cinema at the Sorbonne. And work with UNESCO. And conquer the Alps. And, of course, cycle like a maniac. SEBASTIAN ROMERO Our resident filmmaker and photographer extraordinaire. Native of Germany. Always one drink away from flopping down on the mountain to make snow angels. SJOERD VINK Born in southern Holland. Grew up on a bike. (It’s practically dictated by law there.) Less mandatory: becoming a hot yoga master. Just for fun: a degree from the Royal Academy of Art. SONIA TER HOVANESSIAN Our favourite FrancoArmenian jazz singer / classical flautist / budding photographer from the UK. Now calls Bologna home. Can serenade you in Italian. Yes, you will swoon. STEPHANE LECLERC French-Canadian graphic designer. Loves dropping into Venice for the week. Can get redfaced (in a cute way) about hockey. STEPHANIE GULLEDGE Has journeyed through Europe, South America and Asia on two wheels, but has been hinting (heavily) that she has a hankering for more mohinga in Myanmar. TATIANA BRISOLLA Brazilian. Biologist. Massage therapist. Proud new resident of France. Yoga teacher. Cyclist. We could go on. TELMO BARROS Grew up surfing and sailing on the Portuguese shores of the Atlantic Ocean. Swapped the sea for the Catalan Pyrenees and bike paths of Copenhagen. The sea misses him. He’s just that nice a guy. TESSA GRIFFIN Worked and travelled throughout Europe and Asia... at the age of 16. Teaches by day. Moonlights as an artist. Uh, also by day, technically. THILO ERHARDT B&R’s in-house chameleon. Throw him in the sea? He becomes an expert diver. Send him to the European Space Agency? He walks out with a job. A German Parisian everything. THOMASE FRIESE Has guided B&R travellers through Italy and central Europe for precisely a decade. Has no plans of stopping. Not that we’d let him. TIBOR BARNA Teaches in Asia. Gallivants around the world by bike. Did a 5000 km bike trip through Southeast Asia. Should proooobably be the subject of a documentary. TIM RICHARDSON Our go-to guy in Bhutan, Nepal and his native New Zealand. Why? Can cook anything on a barbecue, cut a tree like a lumberjack and repair bikes like they’re made of Lego. Simultaneously. TIM SCHELLENBERGER Recently earned his masters in South American anthropology, politics, and international relations. Brazil-based intellectual. Happily shuts off his brain every few days to dive, drum and DJ. VERENA ZIEGLER Travelled the world for her (many!) studies. Current address: Barcelona. Loves working outdoors. Loves cycling. Loves inspiring the rest of us to get off our butts and share the wonder.
