Leader of Tomorrow: Ryan Shoemaker Company: Shoemaker Drywall Supplies
T
he mark of a good leader assures nothing remains static. Ryan Shoemaker grew up in the drywall business his father created in 1974 and since he took over the company, it has expanded as a supplier of building materials for the wall and ceiling industry; roofing, insulation, steel studs, acoustical ceilings, fasteners and other tools of the trade. His leadership has grown the company and helped establish its new ‘1-800-DRYWALL’ division serving the retail market. New product lines and strategic partnerships have helped fuel the company’s growth along with innovative approaches to reach into different market segments. Potential acquisitions are always on the table. His father provided the passion for the business, but Shoemaker’s desire to pursue it has made the company evolve into what it is today and continues to be driven by the same level of passion. Leaders see the big picture and put it in context. With power comes responsibility and Shoemaker sees the inextricable link between business and community. “The business community as a whole plays a huge part in influencing and shaping our culture and community, and in turn our community will influence and shape business,” he says. It’s reciprocal. Leave your ego at the door. “Identify your own weaknesses that you need to improve on (and) allow others to help you bridge those gaps,” Shoemaker says. The courage to take risks and the ability to use mistakes as a learning opportunity is fundamental to becoming successful in any endeavour. Life, as with business, is about being well rounded and seeing the opportunities where others see pessimism. “As has been our tradition from day one, SDS will continue to invest in our business, our people and our community,” he says.
