tel, Wee Waa

Between 17 and 21 million years ago, erupting volcanoes created the Nandewar Ranges and the magnificent Mt Kaputar National Park. Erosion of these mountains spawned rich fertile farming country, while a strong river system, strengthened by underground artesian waters, created a network along which Narrabri Shire towns grow and prosper. The Kamilaroi (pronunciation: Gam–ill–a– roy) people were the first inhabitants of Narrabri Shire. Radiating from Narrabri, their land extends north to Goondiwindi, west to Lightning Ridge and south to Quirindi. Scar trees on the Wee Waa/ Narrabri road, bora rings on Mt Kaputar,

a sandstone baby washing area, and sandstone rubbings in the Pilliga forest attest to their presence. History credits explorers Sir Thomas Mitchell and Allan Cunningham with the honour of opening the way to the North West Plains, to the area that is now known as Narrabri Shire. However, the notorious George ‘the Barber’ Clarke, whose epithet refers to his early legitimate trade, was the first white man to seek his fortune in the area. Clarke was convicted of armed robbery for stealing goods worth 40 shillings and was shipped from England in 1825, sentenced to work on a farm near Singleton, NSW. Soon after his arrival he

escaped, painted himself black, took two Aboriginal wives and wandered the plains naked with the natives, stealing cattle. Upon his recapture in 1831, Clarke related stories of a deep, wide navigable river called the Kindur, which flowed into a vast inland sea. The imaginative tale may have been invented in an attempt to save his life, but it was plausible enough to prompt Sir Thomas Mitchell to press out into a virtually unknown area. The Kindur was never discovered, but when the rivers rise in the great floods, the land becomes akin to an inland sea. Mitchell’s explorations paved the way for the early settlers and wealth came to the

area ‘on the sheep’s back’ and the cattle’s pastures.

one beside the Newell Highway, some 25km south of Narrabri, bear out this fact.

Wee Waa, the oldest town in the Namoi Valley, was proclaimed in 1847, followed by Narrabri and Boggabri in 1860. The settlers ventured across the Liverpool Plains to the Boggabri, Narrabri and Wee Waa districts, ‘niver–niver’ country, as it was known by Aboriginals.

The latter grave is that of Aboriginal/ Chinese stockman William Hanes, who died during a flood in the early 1950s. Flood waters made the sandy track to Narrabri impassable so the Coroner granted special permission to bury Hames on public land. According to legend Hames’ horse remained his faithful companion even in death, never straying far from the gravesite.

Many stories of hardship and resourcefulness have evolved throughout the history of Narrabri Shire, as indeed they have all over Australia. Pioneer graves beside the Boggabri and Wee Waa roads and a most curiously positioned

Walking track at Mt Kaputar National Park

DayTop2of the World Mt Kaputar National Park Pronunciation: Cap–you–tar Phone: (02) 6792 7300 National Parks and Wildlife Services Office (NPWS) Allow: 3 Hrs minimum Today you’re heading for the sky! From the 1512m summit of Mt Kaputar, 52km east of Narrabri, you will be treated to panoramic views encompassing a staggering 10 per cent of NSW, weather permitting. Explore the rugged island of wilderness that is Mt Kaputar National Park, an ancient footprint left behind by a series of volcanic eruptions between 17 and 21 million years ago. Rising spectacularly from surrounding flat agricultural plains, millions of years of erosion have forged this volcanic wilderness into the Nandewar Ranges you see today.

Whether you’re a nature lover, photographer, bushwalker, camper or simply seeking a little solitude, prepare to be spellbound by the grandeur of this landscape of lava terraces and volcanic plugs. The national park protects a wide variety of plant communities, including semi–arid woodlands, wet eucalypt forests and subalpine heaths. It’s also home to a host of animal species, and provides a haven for many threatened species – including bats, birds, wallabies and quolls. Keep an eye out for our native pink slug! It often appears after rain, and is unique to Mt Kaputar National Park. For those with time to thoroughly explore the park, two camping areas with hot showers and electric barbecues are available as well as three well-equipped cabins at Dawsons Spring, which can be booked through the NPWS office. Mt Kaputar has a

range of walks to suit all tastes, from pleasant bush ramblings to strenuous climbs. For further information visit www.nationalparks. nsw.gov.au or pick up a guide for the marked walking tracks, available from the Visitor Information Centre or NPWS office in Narrabri.

Deriah Aboriginal Area Allow: 2 Hrs minimum Uncover the secrets of this recently opened reserve, located at the foothills of the Nandewar Ranges. The Deriah Aboriginal Area forms part of the traditional country of the Gamilaroi people and is a beautiful place to explore the unique wildlife of the area and learn more about Aboriginal cultural heritage. Stop for a barbeque at the Wagun Picnic Area and learn about the Wagun (willy wagtail) dreaming amongst the short Culture Sculpture Walk. The nearby Biruu gaba lookout offers spectacular views across the Nandewar range. From the Kaputar Road, turn right onto Eulah Creek Road and follow it for 11km. Turn right into Carinya Road and follow the route uphill to enter the Deriah Aboriginal Area. Part of this access route is unsealed.

of Kaputar’s volcanic past, this basalt rock formation is located in the northern section of Mt Kaputar National Park. As you head north along the Newell Highway, the plains to the west stretch to eternity whilst the furls and rugged peaks of the Nandewar Ranges unfold to the east. Just 3km out of town, turn right onto the picturesque Killarney Gap Road (Bingara Road) and travel a further 33km to the Sawn Rocks carpark. Along the way, on the left, you will pass the fertile paddocks of the IA Watson Grains Research Station. Named after preeminent agricultural scientist Irvine Armstrong Watson, the Research Station is part of the University of Sydney’s Plant Breeding Institute. The site has resources for standard cereal breeding, a grain quality laboratory, glasshouses and controlled environment facilities. From the carpark Sawn Rocks is reached via an easy 750m walking track (disabled access) that meanders through the tall eucalypts, figs and ferns. An observation platform affords stunning views of the intriguing rock formation jutting starkly from the bed, of the Bobbiwaa creek. Stairs to the side enable access to the creek bed upon which outlines of more pillars are visible. This unusual phenomenon is the result of slow and even cooling of molten rock, which enabled individual crystals within the rock to align perfectly with each other. A shelter and BBQ area is available next to the carpark for those wishing to enjoy the scenery.

Fast fact:

Geologists say the polygonal impressions visible in the creek bed are the tops of more basalt piers that continue a further 60m underground.

Waa Gorge Pronunciation: War Gorge Allow: 2.5 Hrs Yet another reminder of the region’s volcanic past, Waa Gorge is as spectacular as it is old. You’ll be entranced by the towering tangerine-streaked walls sweeping up to the ancient volcanic plug, Mt Waa. Millions of years of weathering turned cracks and fault lines into the deeply etched gorge and surrounding gullies you see today. The sheer scale positively dwarfs, while the enormous boulders strewn across the gorge’s floor look like marbles in a giant’s playground. Waa Gorge is located in the far north of Mt Kaputar National Park, approximately one hour from Narrabri. The access road is definitely a DRY WEATHER ROAD ONLY! The walk into Waa Gorge takes a good hour and visitors need to be prepared with water and sturdy shoes. From the car park, follow the short walking track to the tranquil “Mill Bullah” (Two Eyes) waterholes. From here, the walk enters a wilderness area with no formed tracks or signposts. Make sure to look at the map on the interpretive sign by the pools for detailed directions. Climb the small hill on the left of the waterholes and follow the creek for a few hundred metres until you find your way into the rocky creek bed that leads to Waa Gorge.

Yarrie Lake Phone: 0427 666 105

Just a few kilometres west of the scientific wonder of Australia Telescope lies an unexplained wonder of the natural variety. Yarrie Lake, a 3km saucer-shaped expanse of water on the very edge of the Pilliga Forest is thought to have been formed by a falling meteor many thousands of years ago. Whatever its origins, its existence is much appreciated by locals, visitors and wildlife alike. A veritable mecca for over 70 bird species, its sheltered position makes it an excellent natural bird breeding ground. Travellers seeking a little peace will love the quiet isolation, while powered sites, hot showers, toilet and laundry facilities bring that touch of civilisation to this bush camping experience. Some marvellous sunsets make Yarrie Lake a popular spot for photographers, while others come here to enjoy water sports or a touch of yabbying. Back to Nature in the Pilliga Forest

PILLIGA Kamilaroi meaning: Swamp Oak Pronunciation: Pill–e–ga

Advertisers’ Directory page: p42 Situated 105km west of Narrabri and approximately 60km north west of Gwabegar, Pilliga got its start from the early development of the timber industry. Gazetted as a township in 1885, Pilliga was once an important centre on the Cobb and Co route, but today is renowned for its artesian bore baths. The area has strong historical ties from the 1830s, when it was settled by the early squatters, to the 1950s, when Indian trader Nabob Allem and his family based themselves in Pilliga and peddled their wares in a horse-drawn wagon to the grazing families in the

Pilliga Forest

western district. Nabob Allem made quite an impression on the town, as is evidenced in an article printed in the Coinable Times after his death, beginning “Nabob Allem died last Friday. And the people of Pilliga, HIS people, are mourning his loss. For Nabob Allem was the ‘King of the Scrub’, ‘King of Pilliga’, and unofficial Mayor”. A wander in the cemetery reveals a fascinating montage of the lives and trials of the past. Of particular interest are the rough–hewn graves of the Indian traders. The Community Link Centre is a good place to start your visit. Staff will be happy to direct you to such attractions as the Pilliga lagoon, a bird watcher’s paradise. When you’ve worked up an appetite, the Pilliga Pub, with adjoining accommodation, or the Pilliga Café are both great places for a meal, drink, or to rest your head for the night.

Pilliga Wetland

Pilliga Artesian Bore Baths Constructed in 1902 as a permanent town water supply after severe drought, the Bore has become a popular recreational spot for swimming. The therapeutic value of this mineral-rich water has long been recognised by locals and visitors who make regular pilgrimages to the 37-degree pool to soak away those aches and pains. A roof covers the pool area and has lighting for night time bathing. Camping and caravanning is permitted at the bore baths (fees apply). It has toilets, showers and a BBQ area.

Pilliga Forest–“A Million Wild Acres” Ever heard of the Pilliga Yowie? The Pilliga Forest, with its vast and unusual semi–arid woodlands spanning over 3000m2, is said to be the home of this Big Foot kin. Seekers are drawn from across the globe in search of this mystical (or is that mythical?) creature. Yowie’s aside, the Pilliga Forest has been long recognised as one of the most important areas for biodiversity in eastern Australia, home to at least 300 native animal species, and over 900 plant species including cypress pine, ironbark, eucalypt, broom plains, and beautiful spring wildflowers. The scenery within the Pilliga Forest is distinctly unique and makes a trip into the scrub quite an adventure. As you drive across one of the many crisscrossed roads, you may come across remnants of the past (chimney stacks, abandoned timber mills and a cobblestone road) and the future (gas wells).

Today, the Salt Caves area offers a recently revamped picnic area with BBQs and toilet facilities, but according to legend, the caves were once 30m deep, and salt hung in columns like stalactites from the roof. A 2km looped walking track circles the caves, leaving viewers speechless at the unique tunnels and formations that have evolved over many thousands of years. As you walk you will find a number of caves, including one which is closed and undergoing preservation. Keep an eye out for indications of Aboriginal habitation in this cave – grinding marks and artwork in sandstone. Sculptures in the Scrub is a cultural delight in the heart of the Pilliga. Indulge all your senses as you explore the five magnificent sculptures inspired by the Aboriginal connection to the surrounding landscape. Soak in the view of Dandry Gorge and then descend into the sheltered oasis of Dandry Creek below. During early spring you will be treated to spectacular wildflower displays. There is a picnic area with BBQs to relax in for lunch or a campground for those who wish to soak up the atmosphere for longer. Handy Hint: It is advisable to purchase a Pilliga Forest map from the Visitor Information Centre as there are 2,700 km of tracks through the forest and although most are marked, it would be easy to take a wrong turn.

GWABEGAR Pronunciation: Wa–be–gar

The location of this small village, deep in the Pilliga Forest, is key to its existence. Known as the “Heart of the Pilliga” it is roughly the geographical centre of the timber industries that grew and flourished in the western region of the Pilliga. Linked by rail to Baradine and borne from the prosperous timber trade, Gwabegar once sported no less than 12 sawmills! In the early 1900s, Gwabegar was integral in the ‘sleeper cutting’ process that largely enabled the creation of a railway across Australia. Sleeper cutter camps and koala colonies are points of interest in the Gwabegar area. The forestry industry shut down several years ago in Gwabegar but it remains a vibrant town. The new Community Link Centre in Gwabegar provides an excellent meeting spot for village members and visitors.

Boggabri Courthouse

Day 6 BOGGABRI (Original spelling Bukka–Bri) Kamilaroi meaning: Place of Many Creeks Pronunciation: Bog–a–bry Population: 900 Altitude: 251m

Advertisers’ Directory page: p41 - p42 Boggabri was proclaimed a township in 1860, but came into its own in 1882 with the opening of the railway. Today Boggabri, located on the Kamilaroi Highway east of Narrabri, is a historic small country town with big community spirit and a unique country lifestyle. With a rich agricultural history and several recently opened coal mines, the town is set for further expansion. The town boasts a ninehole golf course, bowling club and RSL Club. A modern motel, caravan park (no cabins) and two hotels provide accommodation in the town while fuel and motor repairs are also available. The main business area of Boggabri has, over the years, been found in three different streets. This makes for an interesting mix of architecture, which can be explored with a walk along the Boggabri Heritage Trail.

Open: By Appointment Phone: (02) 6743 4388 Allow: 1hr

This fascinating time piece found in Boggabri’s second main street, Brent St, traces Boggabri’s evolution. With three main streets and the town’s relocation due to flood, Boggabri is a truly dynamic town. The Museum complex houses exhibits of precious memorabilia donated by Boggabri’s residents, past and present. A self-walk Heritage Trail reveals many interesting highlights of Boggabri’s progress through history since its early beginnings. A brochure is available from the Whitehaven Coal office in Merton St or at the Museum in Brent St.

Fast Fact: Boggabri is the only town situated on the banks of the Namoi River that doesn’t flood (although the township of Wee Waa is now protected by a levee bank). After the original town was washed away in flood waters, it was moved to its present day location some 20km to the north west.

Chasing the sweeter things in life? It doesn’t get much sweeter than Nelson’s Honey Factory, 66 Lynn St Boggabri. This successful business venture emerged from Mike Nelson’s childhood hobby of keeping bees, and developed into one of the largest NSW suppliers to the Honey Corporation of Australia. White and Yellow Box and narrow leafed Iron Bark are the major sources of honey extracted by the Nelsons, mainly from the Pilliga Forest, and the honey is superb!

Gins Leap This striking rock face, towering over the Kamilaroi Highway outside Boggabri, has been known by many names over the years. Local Aboriginals knew it as “Cooloobindi”, whilst it was known as “Bullaballakit” in the era when Sir Thomas Mitchell was exploring the Namoi Valley. In Cobb and Co coach days, it was known as “The Rock” and now it goes by “Gins Leap”. And you thought Prince had identity issues! The widely accepted origins of the current name follow the tragic death of a pair of illfated young Aboriginal lovers, a modern day Romeo and Juliet. The young girl, promised to

an elder of her tribe, the Kamilaroi, ran away with a young Aboriginal man from another tribe. Hotly pursued by Kamilaroi tribesmen, the lovers jumped to their deaths from somewhere along the top of this rock.

Tangulda by the Kamilaroi Aboriginals, is now known as Barber’s Pinnacle.

A Mr “Baldy” Adams obtained a grant of land in the vicinity of Gins Leap and in 1854 opened a hotel, known as The Rock Inn. This became a vital stopover point and renowned landmark over the next 20 years, until its closure around 1875, following the opening of hotels in Boggabri. Parts of an old outside lamp from the Inn are housed in the Historical Museum in Boggabri.

A waterfall significantly more impressive than its name indicates, Dripping Rock is the newest tourism hotspot in the Shire. Surrounded by lush forests of Melaleucas, a short stroll from the carpark reveals a large rock pool at the base of the Dripping Rock cascades. This is an idyllic spot for a picnic or just to sit and listen to the hypnotic splash of water, melodious birdsong and wind in the trees.

The grave sites to the right of Gin’s Leap belong to several members of the Grover family, who owned the Inn for many years. The original grave site was situated some 200m west of the present vault, which was constructed by a tradesman of Danish ancestry, Mr Christy Hansen, in 1895.

Dripping Rock can be difficult to find and the road is 4WD only, so please pick up a map from the Visitor Information Centre or Boggabri Museum.

The site also features a picnic area and interpretive sign.

Kamilaroi meaning: Swim away Pronunciation: Barn Bar

Barbers Lagoon and Barbers Pinnacle

Located approximately 30km north west of Boggabri on the Kamilaroi Highway, Baan Baa had early beginnings as a squatting run. Only the pub remains in this previously bustling railway village. And what a pub it is! Recently refurbished, the Railway Hotel now offers

Local landmarks Barbers Lagoon and Barbers Pinnacle are located on the Manilla Road, just north of Boggabri, after crossing the Iron Bridge. They take their names from George “The Barber” Clark, the runaway convict who inhabited this area from 1826 to 1831, living with the Kamilaroi people who seem to have regarded him as one of their own returned from the dead. Barbers Lagoon, on your right, is marked by a plaque and notes the approximate location of Clarke’s hut and stockyards. The striking outcrop of rocks on your left, called

accommodation and counter meals well worth stopping for. Baan Baa is now primarily a grain terminal, feeding in from rich grain country surrounds. Consequently, this sleepy town starts to buzz during grain harvest. Newly opened coal mines in the vicinity may foster growth in the village, with new tennis courts perhaps serving the advantage back to Baan Baa’s court.

Maules Creek After you cross the Harparary Bridge, take the Maules Creek road and head for ‘the hills’. Maules Creek is situated at the foothills of the Mt Kaputar National Park and is truly amazing countryside. The rugged and enchanting landscape hides a deep rich black soil, perfectly suited to farming. As a result, the region harbours some of the country’s leading cattle studs. Water flows from the mountains, trickling through Melaleuca-lined creeks to arrive as clear as crystal. Many beautiful locations along the river provide captivating hideaways to have a picnic or just enjoy the presence of nature. The size and grandeur of the Nandewar Ranges viewed from the Maules Creek area is truly spectacular. To the South of Maules Creek is Leard Forest. This forest is predominantly pine, iron bark and gum trees.

Edgeroi

Pronunciation: Bell–at–a Population: 186

Phone: (02) 6792 7300 National Parks and Wildlife Services Office (NPWS) Allow: 2 Hrs

Pronunciation: Edge–roy

Bellata, located 42km north of Narrabri on the Newell Highway, is a rich agricultural region known for its natural (minerals, such as petrified and opalised wood and agate) and its manmade (pasta) treasures. Situated in the “Golden Durum Triangle” the Bellata area is responsible for the production of some of the best “prime hard” wheat in Australia and is also home to several large olive groves.

The Terry Hie Hie Aboriginal Area stretches north of the Mt Kaputar National Park and encompasses many important Gamilaroi sites. It has a delightful picnic area with interpretive signs and two looped walking trails, which are great for spotting woodland birds. From Bellata, turn right onto Wilga Street. This road turns into Berrigal Creek Road. Follow this road for 34km and veer left at the Y-intersection with Melburra Road. Terry Hie Hie Aboriginal Area is a further 14km, just north of the village.

Edgeroi lies just 26km north of Narrabri on the Newell Highway. The old Edgeroi Station woolshed, the remains of which are visible on the right as you drive south from Bellata, was once the largest in the Southern Hemisphere with a 52-stand capacity. Edgeroi Station was one of the largest Soldier Settlement blocks in NSW to be divided up after the Second World War. Edgeroi is an agricultural village and farmers in the area grow wheat, sorghum, dry land summer crops and cotton, and graze cattle and sheep.

Fast fact: At a time when money was in short supply inland, Bellata, originally known as Woolabra, produced its own! The Woolabra one pound note was legal tender throughout NSW. Wheat

Pilliga Pottery

Further Af ield Pilliga Pottery & Barkala Farmstay Dandry Road, Coonabarabran NSW 2357 Open: 7 days Phone: (02) 6842 2239 Allow: 1-2 Hrs Pilliga Pottery, built by a German family, is located an easy 95km south of Narrabri, just off the Newell Highway towards Coonabarabran. Travellers are encouraged to make the detour into the extensive studio workshop, gallery and Blue Wren Bush Cafe, where you can relax and enjoy Devonshire Tea, fresh coffee, tasty lunches and delicious dinners in a magical European-inspired setting, surrounded by the beautiful woodlands of the Pilliga Forest. Explore the pottery complex and watch the artists transform local clay into wonderful shapes and patterns, including the famous Blue Wren design. The pottery is located on Barkala Farm, which offers pet-friendly and family friendly farmstay in unique hand-crafted guesthouses, including the iconic Old Schoolhouse, which has been featured in many magazines.

Fast fact: The Kamilaroi Highway is named after the traditional owners of the area through which it passes. It is the first, and to date only, highway in Australia to be named after an Aboriginal tribal group.

Activities for guests include pottery classes, bushwalking, a strolling through the native and sculpture gardens, bird watching tours (by appointment), star gazing, and enjoying a swim in summer. Bird watchers take note, the property is a haven for distinctive birds, with over 120 species resident or regular migrants, including eight threatened species. Campers are welcome (unpowered sites), with campfires available in season. Pilliga Pottery is a great place to get away, an unforgettable experience for people of all ages.

Kamilaroi Highway–The Opal Connection From the great divide to the great outback, the Kamilaroi Highway runs through Narrabri on its way to Bourke. This scenic drive is the most convenient route to Lightning Ridge from Narrabri, with plenty to see along the way. Head through Wee Waa and Burren Junction, where a bitumen road links Narrabri with Lightning Ridge.

Burren Junction The area between Wee Waa and Burren Junction was first settled by white man in the 1830s after being inhabited by the Kamilaroi Aboriginal tribe for some 40,000 years. Taking advantage of the region’s rich fertile soils, sheep and cattle grazing eventually led the way to wheat and, overwhelmingly, cotton production. The town of Burren Junction, just outside Narrabri Shire, was established when the railway forged out west. At this time the

township bustled with every service necessary for life in a remote country area. Today, though a shadow of its former vitality, Burren boasts a general store, post office, hotel with cabin accommodation, bowling club and artesian bore baths. Undoubtedly Burren Junction’s biggest draw card, the bore baths underwent major renovations in 2007. Free camping and the allure of the hot, all-healing waters draw crowds of caravans, motor homes and campers year around.

Lightning Ridge Lightning Ridge, located in outback NSW on the world’s richest deposit of black opal, abounds with characters and attractions as colourful as their gems! Soak in the free hot artesian bore baths, experience mining or visit one of the unique collections and homes of the characters of the Ridge. Take a step back in time, or try your luck fossicking. Whatever your taste, there is something to tickle your fancy.

Fast fact: From Narrabri it’s a three hour drive to Lightning Ridge, world famous for its stunning black opals.

We believe the resources in and around the Pilliga near Narrabri can supply up to 50% of NSW’s natural gas and can be extracted without impacting the region’s water resources and agricultural land. The Narrabri Gas Project will generate jobs and deliver economic benefits to the region and continue Santos’ long tradition of safely delivering energy to Australian households and businesses. If you’d like to find out more about our project while visiting Narrabri, stop in at our shopfront or join a tour of our operations. We’d really like to show you around.
