2025 Report to the Community | Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture

Page 1

Letter from the interim executive director

In these times when the value of science is questioned and cultural differences under attack, I am struck by the continuing importance and relevance of the Burke’s mission.

Here at the Burke, the work that we do together — with your support — informs our collective understanding of the world in which we live. New insights lead to greater knowledge and spark new questions, many of which will be answered by the next generation of scientists and cultural practitioners who train at the museum with our curators, collections managers, and tribal scholars. Our students bring hope for the future as they push scientific boundaries, test ideas in the field, learn to lead collaboratively and with integrity, and take what they learn back to their communities.

In this year’s report to the community, you’ll read features and stories about active research in the museum, from paleobotany to Native science. I hope these stories enhance your scientific knowledge, pique your curiosity, and reaffirm your incredible support of the Burke.

Thank you,

NATIVE AMERICAN ADVISORY BOARD

The Native American Advisory Board and the museum have been hard at work this year to review existing museum policies and align them with the American Alliance of Museum’s Standards for Museums with Native American Collections. Teams of Burke staff and NAAB members worked collaboratively to review policies in seven areas, from financial stability to public trust and accountability. This type of work is critical to ensuring that the museum continues to lead the nation’s museums in tribal consultation and involvement and sets the stage for even greater collaboration and strengthened relationships. The NAAB is proud to do this important work alongside the Burke’s committed staff.

BURKE MUSEUM ASSOCIATION

Everything we do as the Burke Museum Association pivots on the strength of our relationships with each other and in our communities. Every new member, every new visitor, and every dollar we raise ensures that the museum is available to future generations of scientists, storytellers, makers, and leaders. This year, we are proud of the ways that we have been able to fulfill our mission of support while navigating the impacts of constant change. We are inspired by the resilience and wisdom of our larger Burke ecosystem, and we serve a future vision of global access through digitization and healing through ethical stewardship. We look forward to our work ahead and are grateful for the many people and communities that make the work of the museum possible.

RESEARCH HIGHLIGHT

Paleobotany

Plant taxonomic turnover and diversity across the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary in northeastern Montana

When an asteroid slammed into Earth 66 million years ago, dinosaurs weren’t the only victims. Plants suffered, too.

As part of the long-term Hell Creek Project in Montana, doctors Paige Wilson Deibel, Caroline Strömberg, and Gregory Wilson Mantilla of the Burke Museum have been piecing together what happened to plant life during this cataclysm. By studying fossil leaves across the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary (the end of the Mesozoic era and beginning of the Cenozoic age of mammals), they’ve illuminated a clear picture of how plants were affected and what recovery looked like. In turn, this information can help us understand how our world might change in the future.

The results show that plant communities were devastated, with many species disappearing outright. In the immediate aftermath, the “survivors” formed ecosystems with extremely low diversity: sparse, homogenous landscapes vastly different than the lush forests that thrived before the impact.

That scarcity didn’t last long, though. Just as mammals and birds came into their own after the age of dinosaurs, plants also staged a parallel comeback. In a relatively short period of time, new species emerged and diversified.

This work sheds light on the dynamics of plants during mass extinction events and the interconnectedness among plants, mammals, dinosaurs, reptiles, and all the other creatures thriving in northeast Montana at the twilight of the dinosaurs. Ongoing research seeks to expand this understanding even further in time, tracing how the earliest signs of recovery transformed into the extraordinary diversity of mammals we know today.

The research paper was published in Paleobiology.

RESEARCH HIGHLIGHT

Ornithology

Sharper,

straighter, stiffer, stronger: Sexually

dimorphic bill shape enhances male stabbing performance in the Green Hermit

If you imagine delicate birds sipping nectar with long, slender beaks when you think of hummingbirds, you’re in good company. But, in some species, like long-billed hermits (Phaethornis longirostris), those dainty-looking bills double as weapons.

Curator of Ornithology Alejandro Rico Guevara’s research showed that male long-billed hermits battle each other for prime real estate on display grounds called leks, where females go to “shop” for mates. And, when males clash, their beaks aren’t just for show: They’re sharpened into dagger-like tips perfect for stabbing rivals.

A team of Burke Museum ornithology researchers wanted to understand if other hummingbird species also evolved “swordplay” adaptations. To do this, they looked at another lekking species, the Green Hermit (Phaethornis guy) and put their beaks to the test.

The team created 3D digital models of the green hermit’s beak from museum specimens using photogrammetry and CT scanning and ran simulations to see how the beaks performed under stabbing forces.

The results were striking. Male green hermits also sport sharp dagger tips — and their straighter beaks transmit force more efficiently than curvier female beaks. In other words, their bills are optimized for combat, setting up epic battles for love on the leks.

While bill differences between males and females are often explained by feeding habits, this study shows that sexual selection in some hummingbird species is driving the evolution of specialized weaponry.

The research paper was accepted for publication by the Journal of Experimental Biology

Native Science RESEARCH

Fire as Medicine

Six years ago, we celebrated the opening of the new building and debuted the Burke Meadow, designing a camas prairie like those that once covered much of our state but are now in decline. From the beginning, a team of meadow whisperers, which includes Polly Olsen (Burke tribal liaison), has generated knowledge and cared for the meadow by integrating Native and Western scientific methods.

This past year, the meadow team introduced controlled burning — a cultural practice based on an ethos of responsibility to the land and intended to sustain healthy and bountiful harvests. Low intensity fire is known to control weeds, restore nutrients, and stimulate growth. Some of the original plants from 2019 have all but disappeared due to invasive lupine. The team theorized that a controlled burn would make room for and spur the regrowth of these native plants and improve the overall health of the meadow.

The meadow’s response to the burn was clear. Plant diversity increased, invasive lupine declined, and blanket flower and chocolate lily — thought to be lost — returned. Camas found its footing again, filling the landscape with more brightpurple blossoms than ever. The results proved that fire is medicine for plants and landscapes.

For the team, however, this work is about more than outcomes. It’s about process: combining Native and Western sciences, respecting the plants’ timelines, and listening to the land to understand its needs.

Archaeology

Spice Fights on the Banda Islands

Occupying a land area of just 17 square miles, Indonesia’s Banda Islands were once the world’s sole source of nutmeg, so it’s no surprise that these “spice islands” endured years of colonial competition for control of the nutty, earthy spice.

This past year, students from the United States and Southeast Asia participated in an archaeological field school co-directed by Peter Lape (Burke curator of archaeology), where they learned survey, excavation, and field lab processing at a variety of Banda Island sites.

Results of radiocarbon dating from three excavated village sites this year showed that the deepest (i.e., oldest) soil levels, or strata, date to about 1400–1500 AD, just before a violent period when European colonial powers fought for monopolies on nutmeg trade.

One site is known as the original house of Makatita, a Bandanese leader executed by the Dutch in 1621. The team found disarticulated bones in the strata, which may be related to the turmoil that marked this era. Carbon dating with similar ages from another site supports oral traditions as the location of the first mosque in Banda. Other analyses are in process now.

Perhaps most exciting is the impact of student-created public programs on local communities. This year’s cohort created two exhibits and three public programs targeting all ages. And who knows? Maybe they planted the seeds of the next generation of archaeologists, just like students from the 2009 field school in Banda, whose work inspired two elementary age students from one of the outer Banda islands to join the field school this year as college students at the University of Banda Naira.
