Making History
Grandchildren are a health benefit to many seniors
Age is barely even a number for David Adickes. There’s no other way to explain how he continues to build massive sculptures. He is pictured with editor and director Robert Jones. (Photo Contributed)
90-year-old artist still building big By Kim Hogstrom For The Leader The near northside is home to some remarkable artists, but perhaps none are more prolific – or loved - than David Adickes. Last month, the 90-year-old Heights artist relocated his four, 40-foot Beatle sculptures to the beer garden at 8th Wonder Brewery east of downtown. About 350 people turned out to celebrate the towering musicians and their new availability. A long line formed of selfie-takers to snap the sculptures and the artist alike. For those who love selfies, there are plenty of opportunities when it comes to Adickes’ work. His 76-foot-tall sculpture of Sam Houston on I-45 in Huntsville is his most famous. “Virtuoso” in front of the Lyric Center downtown comes in second. Commuters using the I-45 - I-10 exchange love “Mount Rush Hour,” a small patch of park hosting sculpted busts of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Sam Houston,
Adickes’ next project is to build a sculpture a little smaller than “Huntsville Sam” for the city of Baytown. (Photo from HuntsvilleTexas.com)
and Stephen F. Austin lined up in a tidy row. Each bust sits on a 10-foot base bringing it to 28 feet. They are cast in concrete and each weighs about 7,000 pounds. There are flood lights at ground level to highlight the statesmen after nightfall making for a remarkable sight from the highway.
For years, Adickes’ art studio, called Sculpturworx and located on Sawyer St. at Summer, was home to all 44 of his famous 20foot heads of American presidents (with a 45th in the planning stage). Tour buses would stop by the site everyday so tourists could take photos. Adickes’ famous “We ‘Heart’ Houston” sculpture originally located on I-10 at the edge of the Heights, has also become an icon. Today it appears on city postcards and promotional materials everywhere. The years have not slowed this artist down. He was recently commissioned to create what is likely to be his most celebrated sculpture to date. The city of Baytown asked Adickes to produce another giant sculpture of Sam Houston in a little smaller scale than his “Huntsville Sam,” but this time, the general will be sitting on a horse. It will appear in the center of a new traffic round-about and stand on a landscaped, tiered terrace in the center See Adickes P. 3B
In the not-so-distant past, extended families were the norm, with multiple generations residing on the same street if not in the same house. Today the family unit is largely an amalgam of different situations. The rise of two-income families has pressured parents into finding childcare situations. Quite often grandparents once again step in to offer guidance and support for youngsters. This can be a good thing for both the grandparents and the grandchildren. Although a bevy of psychological research focuses on parent-child relationships, new evidence points to the benefits of the grandchild-grandparent relationship as well. Close relationships between these different demographics is often a sign of strong familial ties. A study from researchers at Boston College discovered that emotionally close ties between grandparents and adult grandchildren reduced depressive symptoms in both groups. Research at the University of Oxford among English children between the ages 11 and 16 found that close grandparent-grandchild relationships were associated with benefits including fewer emotional and behavioral problems and fewer difficulties with peers. Adult and grandchildren alike benefit from relationships with their elders. Grandparents can provide a connection and exposure to different ideas while providing a link to family history and knowledge regarding traditions and customs not readily available elsewhere. Nurturing grandparent-grandchild experiences may be easy for families where grandparents live in the same house or close by. For others, it may take some effort. The following are some ways to facilitate time spent together. · Schedule regular family reunions or get-togethers. Host or plan multi-generation events that bring the family together and expose children to various members of their family. · Promote one-on-one time. Have grandchildren spend time with grandparents in intimate settings. Alone time can be good for both and offers each undivided attention. A meal at a restaurant or time spent doing a puzzle or craft can be interesting to both generations involved. · Video chat when possible. If distance makes frequent visits challenging, use technology to bridge that gap.
Book Scene provides avenue to living a dream By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com Alda Pool cannot imagine a greater purpose in life than what she’s doing in her later years. Pool, the 66-year-old co-owner of The Book Scene on West 43rd Street along with business partner and longtime friend Cathy Stringer since November of 2015, had envisioned owning her own store almost since she can remember, and that dream has finally come to fruition. Pool learned to read by spelling words out for her grandmother (who was blind), and a passion was born that could almost never be fully quenched. “She would tell me the words for me to spell out, and that’s how I learned to read—after that I just developed a love for books. I was never without something to read, and it just grew from there,” Pool said. Opportunity awaits From crosstown treks to the old Heights Library as a young girl, to working under
The Book Scene’s previous owner – who she has known for more than 30 years — beginning in 2013, Pool was never without a novel in hand. Then, in early 2015, a door opened. “Eventually [the former owner] decided to retire to spend more time with her family, she asked if I wanted to buy the store. I wanted to, but didn’t know if I could afford it, so I passed it around to some friends,” she said. “I always went to her store and bought her books, so it was perfect. I didn’t know the business, but I knew the book store, and as I worked with her I learned a little bit of the business.” Pool and Stringer had worked together at Exxon since the 70s until retiring in the early 2000s, had traveled together, and gone to book conventions together long before The Book Scene was even an idea. Additionally, Stringer had always looked to break into the business world — so the stars were aligning. “Our lives have always been very intertwined — she likes a lot of the same things and books that I do. We read different things, but we have the same pas-

sions,” Pool said. A dream come true So, a partnership rooted in friendship blossomed. However, though she had cursory business knowledge, Pool quickly discovered — with Stringer’s help — that owning a passion and owning a store represented completely separate ideologies, especially considering her seniority. “It’s really been an eye-opening experience for an older senior person — I’ve had to learn on the go, and it’s a scary experience. Cathy and I are responsible for this,” she said. “But we have a greater love for the people who come into the store — that’s really what it’s about.” Simple as that—people invigorating people. Right or wrong, today’s perception of the older adult may be that they want to simply retire, and wait for life’s hourglass to run out—but not Pool. “I like people. I’ve always been a talker, always been a reader. You meet people who have the same passion for books that

On Monday, Oct. 2, Memorial Hermann will begin seeing patients at its new Convenient Care Center at 1431 Studemont. Along with a 24-hour ER, the center has labs, imaging and a general practice.
Memorial Hermann set to open new concept near Heights By Jonathan McElvy jonathan@theleadernews.com You wouldn’t call it an urgent care, because it’s much more than that. But you wouldn’t call it a hospital either, because there are no patient beds or surgical suites. On Oct. 2, Memorial Hermann will open a relatively new medical concept just south of the Heights, on Studemont just off I-10, called a Convenient Care Center. It’s the fifth of these locations around the Greater Houston market, and it’s designed to give specific communities like the Heights an easier way to get care that, otherwise, might require a trip to a full-scale hospital. Start with the Emergency Room, which comes equipped with 10 treatment rooms and a trauma suite for the worst of injuries. “The ER is full service,” said Teal Holden, vice president of operations-ambulatory care, for Memorial Hermann. “We can handle any type of trauma, which includes our imaging center.” According to Holden, doctors from Memorial Hermann Greater Heights will handle rotations in the emergency room at the CCC. “Instead of driving to one of our hospitals, patients will be able to go there and see the same physicians,” she said. While the emergency room may be the most obvious benefit to the CCC (Memorial Hermann’s same concept in Summer Creek sees between 70100 ER patients a day and the Pearland location sees another 60-90 patients a day), there are other benefits to having a medical center that fits an area without large-scale medical locations. The 43,000 square-foot building, which cost an estimated $14 million to build and will employee 90-100 new employees, also includes a complete imaging center, with MRIs, X-Rays, CT scans and ultrasounds available. And whether you’re a patient at the facility, or want to book imaging based on an-

other doctor’s orders, the facility is available just like any other outpatient imaging center. “We developed a growth strategy several years ago… and we looked at areas with growing markets,” Holden said. “We wanted to create additional access points where we could deliver outpatient needs.” That doesn’t just include ER and imaging, either. The CCC includes a Primary Care physician’s office, which will take the place of Memorial Hermann’s family medicine location on 19th Street in the Heights. The location includes a diagnostic laboratory and an outpatient sports medicine and rehab facility. “We want this to become a medical home for people in this community,” Holden said. Before opening for patient care on Oct. 2, the Convenient Care Center will host an open house on Wednesday, Sept. 27, from 6-8 p.m. During that event, there will be opportunities to meet physicians, enjoy food and drinks, take tours, get free health screenings and take pictures with Clutch, the Rockets’ mascot.
At top, the new Convenient Care Center will have complete imaging, including an open MRI. Above, left, the emergency room has 10 treatment rooms, including one specifically designed for more severe trauma injuries. Above right, the CCC also has a physical therapy wing, that can be used for patients who live near the new location. (Photos by Jonathan McElvy)

Adickes from P. 1B making it even taller. The new Sam is guaranteed to take our breath away. “With this sculpture, General Houston will be pointing in the direction of San Jacinto where the battle took place, much like he did with his Texian army that day in 1836. Texas won its freedom from Mexico as a result of that battle, and it holds an important place in the state’s history, stated Adickes. “There has been talk by officials in Baytown to add a viewing platform so people can park, and climb the platform and take photos with General Houston, the artist concluded with a smile. While America is removing statues of officers who fought in the Civil War, Adickes is sculpting one from the same time in history. There is a reason to memorialize this great man. Sam Houston refused to
let Texas join the Confederacy, choosing to remain a member of the Union instead. It ultimately cost him his position as Texas Governor. Baytown also commissioned a video artist to document the creation of the sculpture and Adickes himself due out in the spring. Director/Producer Robert Johns and his company Full PrismImage will record every aspect of the artist as he creates what is sure to become a Texas state treasure. “I’ve known David for a decade, and he is the nicest, most gracious and intensely creative man I have every met, Johns said. “We are producing a 56 minute documentary to record his process for posterity. I love doing it because every single element I record about David, and every single shot of his work, is simply amazing. Final designs for the “new Sam will be released soon.

you do—you talk books, you talk about life; you talk about anything, she said. “Owning a bookstore, every person you meet is like opening up a new book — everybody who comes in has their own story to tell. We truly feel welcome in the neighborhood. The people I meet make this worth coming in every day. I get emotional sometimes, because it’s like one big family. Pool’s joy Tuesday afternoon in helping customers was evident and infectious, her passion unbridled — all seemingly a product of being in the perfect place at the perfect time. “I’m living my dream, so it doesn’t really get better than that. There’s some reason this all fell into place and seemed meant to be, she said. “Maybe something else is in the pipeline — I don’t know, but there’s some reason that I’m supposed to be here at this point in time. I’m where I wanted to be years ago, now. I’m doing what I wanted to do.

Being a caregiver is a big job Using your time wisely For The Leader Individuals are born into the world requiring the care of their parents and other adult guardians to grow and thrive. These adult children, in turn, may end up providing care when their parents reach senior age or face an illness or disability. Becoming a family caregiver frequently is a tough choice to make. It requires patience and time, and can be emotionally and physically taxing. An estimated 43.5 million adults in the United States have provided unpaid care to an adult or a child in the prior 12 months, according to the National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP Public Policy Institute. It’s not uncommon for caregivers of any age to feel stressed and burned out by the demands of caregiving. The Mayo Clinic says people who experience caregiver stress can be vulnerable to changes in their own health. Some signs of caregiver stress include: - Feeling overwhelmed or constantly worried - Feeling tired most of the time
- Gaining or losing a lot of weight - Becoming easily irritated or angry - Losing interest in activities you used to enjoy - Having frequent headaches, bodily pain or other physical problems Some caregivers even resort to drugs and alcohol to self-medicate, which can lead to further issues. To avoid the potential pitfalls of caregiver stress, individuals should always put their needs first and find ways to alleviate the added stress of caring for a loved one. These suggestions are just a start. Don’t strive for perfection It isn’t possible to maintain a patient attitude and get everything done perfectly each and every day. People are not perfect and mistakes will be made. Do not punish yourself if you lash out or simply need a break Eat healthy As anyone who has dealt with a hungry toddler can attest, failure to eat well and frequently can result in an

emotional meltdown. Be sure to always make time for nutritious meals. This will help keep up energy stores and enable you to better cope with caregiver stress. Pay attention to mood changes Anxiety or depression can sneak up on you when you least expect it. Ask for help if you feel your tasks are becoming too overwhelming. Seek the help of a doctor if changes in mood, sleeping patterns, appetite, and the like become noticeable. Take frequent breaks Getting a break from caregiving and setting aside time for yourself can increase patience levels and the ability to bounce back from stress. Whenever possible, have a friend or another relative step in for you so you get a break. Explore resources available for professional aides to come and take some of the responsibilities off of your shoulders. Being a caregiver can be a rewarding, but challenging role to play. Caregivers should keep their health a priority.

during assisted living visits For The Leader For many seniors, a day arrives in their lives when it is no longer safe or practical to live at home alone. Assisted living facilities can help seniors adjust to their new situations. Such facilities typically offer comfortable surroundings, caring staff and all the amenities of home. Although fellow residents can provide companionship and friendships can develop over the course of time, assisted living facility residents also enjoy regular visits from family and friends. Such visits keep seniors connected with their loved ones and break up routines that, over time, may become monotonous. Some people may feel anxious or awkward visiting assisted living facilities because it may shed light on the frailties or specialized needs of loved ones. This may be especially true if a loved one has a physical, neurological or mental illness. Rather than

Call ahead to find out if there are any medical appointments or outings planned. Visiting during meals or activities can be fun because you’ll be engaged and will have something to keep both of you busy. Limit distractions Find a quiet and comfortable place at the facility where you can spend time with your loved one. This way you can focus most of your attention on the person you are visiting, and he or she can do the same. More retail set to launch in the Heights By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com Development in Houston never takes a day off, and multiple new retail centers are set to spring up around the Heights in the coming year. Collum Commercial Management, which bought a 15,450-square foot tract at the northwest corner of Yale Street and 21st Street about two years ago, is in the midst of developing property just down the street from Hamilton Middle School into a 5,000 square-foot retail center. Additionally, the company has commenced work on a Washington Heights District development aimed at expanding their footprint around the local community. Upon completion, the projects will be Collum Commercial Partners’ second and third developments in the area, having previously developed property at Koehler Street and Yale in the Heights. Among amenities planned for the spot are a completely remodeled building as well as a new parking lot composed of 25 spots as well as 12 bike racks to accommodate the local area’s affinity for alternate modes of transportation. Tucked away just west of Hamilton Middle School and within walking distance of local neighborhoods, the currently unnamed development stands at the ready with family friendly options suited to the local demographic. “This is a good residential neighborhood with a strong
family base — we wanted to take an old building and refurbish it instead of just tearing it down, and we liked doing that here, Collum said of the company’s interest further putting their stamp on the local Heights scene. Construction has already commenced along the west end of 21st Street, and tenants already anchoring the development (The Joint Chiropractic and a general dentist) should be able to build out and open their doors in the spring of 2018 following a shell delivery according to Collum. As of press time, she said the company still holds about 1,500 square feet of unleased space. Washington Heights Just down Heights Boulevard on Center Street, Collum an old storage building served as home base for a similar, but slightly larger 6,000 square foot development in the heart of the Washington Heights district. With little to no refurbishment necessary and virtually no damage in Hurricane Harvey’s aftermath, Collum said the exterior walls are already in the process of being elevated and installed on the nearly 19,500-square-foot lot. Tenants such as orthodontist Dr. James May and Smoothie King could open around the start of the New Year if all goes according to plan, and Collum said the company is in the midst of negotiations for additional tenants to fill the remaining 2,000 square feet or so left to lease.

Local markets yield mixed results following Harvey By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com As Houston residents look to rebuild, so too will the local housing market, which itself was slammed hard leading up to the historic incident. Houston’s monthly housing market indicators yielded mixed readings in August thanks to Harvey. Single-family home sales, total property sales and total dollar volume down sharply compared to August 2016, and local markets played both ends of the spectrum. According to a release from the Houston Association of Realtors, overall August single-family housing sales were dealt a monstrous blow, taking a 25.4 percent plunge from the 2016 figure. Closer to home, the 77008 (down 38.5 percent), 77018 (31.8 percent) and 77091 (down 44.4 percent) zip codes also took a beating, seemingly caused almost entirely due to Harvey’s havoc.
“Hurricane Harvey dealt a severe blow to the Houston area and Texas Gulf coast and it will probably be several weeks until we can gauge the storm’s full impact on our housing market,” HAR Chair Cindy Hamann said. “Home sales were humming throughout the first three weeks of August, but the moment Harvey struck the region, everything came to a screeching halt.” “HAR continues to encourage anyone who has housing available for temporary occupancy (up to 12 weeks) to please post it on our Harvey Temporary Housing page as soon as possible at har.com/ temporaryhousing to provide housing to those in need,” she added. Somewhat surprisingly, home pricing remained relatively unaffected by Harvey, with greater Houston seeing an overall rise of about 2.6 percent to just over $296,000. However, the local markets diverged from the trend, with
all three diving sharply, ranging from decreases of 4.7 percent (77091) and 5.7 percent (77008) to more drastic dips befalling the Garden Oaks/ Oak Forest neighborhood at 13.3 percent YOY from August 2016. Meanwhile, the area’s median home price held with about a 3 percent increase YOY. And while the Greater Inwood/ Acres Homes neighborhood followed the trend with a 10.5 percent spike in single-family median home price, the Heights remained steady with a slight (1.9 percent) dip, while Garden Oaks and Oak Forest experienced a more drastic dip of nearly 12 percent. Single-family homes inventory grew from a 4.0-months supply to 4.4 months (compared to the national average of 4.2 months), but is expected to decline in the coming weeks as demand for undamaged and repaired homes outpaces supply.
