DO IT

DIY HEADBOARD

Dreambaby child safety furniture anchor, $10, I/N: 4210552

1 Position a honeycomb core door on timber offcuts to raise it off the work surface. Along one side, find the centre (1020mm in from the ends) and mark 600mm to either side. Pre-drill at both marks through the middle of the frame with an 8mm bit. Note: The holes snugly fit the 3/8" lug screws of the legs.

4 Mark the first row of stapling by loosely pushing in upholstery nails, 150mm from the top, at the centre, and 150mm and 585mm in from each end. Mark the second row 375mm from the top, 360mm from the ends and 440mm apart. Mark the third 280mm up from the base, at the centre, and 150mm and 585mm from each end.

7 At the back of the headboard, at the centre, pull the fabric along the top to staple a 200mm-wide section into the frame, staple the opposite side, then work around in sections. Cut the bulk from the corners, fold the fabric like wrapping a gift, with raw edges tucked under to prevent fraying, and staple the excess.

2 Cut the wadding into three equal pieces 2160mm long by 990mm wide. Spray the door face with adhesive and centre a piece of wadding, spreading it evenly and stapling into the sides. Layer the other pieces with adhesive between each. Use scissors to trim wadding from around the leg holes.

5 Beginning at the centre of the top row, remove the nail with pliers and staple horizontally over the indented hole, using this as the base of a stapled square. Replace the remaining nails, working outwards, smoothing the fabric and checking the measurements before making each stapled square.

Tapered legs plus the gap created by the safety anchors should create enough space to allow for skirting behind the bed

3 Flip the door over, fold the wadding around to the back and secure with staples angled 45° to the edge. Fold down the corners, trimming away the bulky excess and stapling the loose edges. Avoiding the seams, cut a drop sheet to 2350mm long by 1150mm wide and centre it over the assembly.

FOR THE SAFETY ANCHORS

Position the headboard and use a stud finder to locate wall studs behind either end, marking with tape. To install safety anchors, pre-drill into the studs with a 3mm bit and secure the wall plate. Mark the furniture plate on the back of the headboard, trim the wadding and secure into the frame. Complete the assembly according to the instructions, and push the bed into place.

6 To create diamond patterns, position daisy head upholstery nails into the staple squares, with the side nails inside the square and the top and bottom nails on the outside, avoiding any overlap. Dab clear construction adhesive under the head of each, tapping in with a small hammer and leaving to dry.

Keep in mind... 8 Measure the height of the bed base from the floor, then mark the length on the legs, measuring from the top. Use a handsaw to cut the legs from the bottom. Find the holes in the headboard and snip 10mm cuts in the fabric. Dab adhesive around the top of the legs, twist them into the holes and leave to dry. Smooth with a medium-heat iron. bunnings.com.au |

When using power tools, always wear the recommended safety gear. When using spray adhesive, work in a well-ventilated area and wear a mask. n When using a staple gun, ensure the base is completely flat on the surface before pulling the trigger and always wear eye protection. Loosen any stray staples with a small flathead screwdriver and remove with pliers. n Before drilling into walls, use a stud finder to check for wiring or pipework, and turn off the power before working. If unsure, call a professional. n
