17 January 2012 Dear Parents/Guardians, P1 – 2012 Assessment Framework, Term 1 Calendar and Assessment Tasks Warmest greetings! In its report released in March 2009, Primary Education Review and Implementation Committee (PERI) mentioned that at lower primary (Primary 1 and 2), when pupils are just beginning school, a key focus should be placed on building pupils’ confidence and desire to learn. Schools should be encouraged to move away from an overly strong emphasis on examinations, and explore the use of bite-sized forms of assessment which place more emphasis on learning rather than on grades alone. At Primary 1 less importance should be placed on semestral examinations so as to facilitate a smooth transition from preschool to primary school. In line with the above recommendation, we are pleased to inform you that the school has adopted the following assessment framework for the Primary 1 in 2010 and will continue with this framework this year (2012): 2012 Primary 1 Assessment Framework English Language (EL)

All assessment tasks will be notified through your child’s “Pupil’s Diary” one week before the tasks are carried out. A combination of quantitative (marks/ grades) and qualitative (rubrics/ checklists) feedback with regard to your child’s performance will be given to you to help you to have a better understanding of his or her progress. Please refer to Annexes B1, B2 and B3 for the samples of the rubrics. In Terms 3 and 4, in contrast to Terms 1 and 2, the marks scored by the pupils in the various assessment tasks will be included in the Primary 1 total aggregate score. Please refer to the 2012 Primary 1 Assessment Framework for the weighting of various assessment tasks. Apart from the assessment tasks mentioned above, other assessment tasks that aim to further strengthen pupils’ learning might be carried out throughout the year. These assessment tasks do not have any weighting. There is no semestral assessment (SA) for the entire year. Through the various bite-sized assessment tasks that help build pupils’ confidence progressively in their learning, we hope that we will be able to provide you with a more meaningful and holistic feedback on your child's progress throughout the year. Annex A shows the overview of the assessment tasks for Term 1. We look forward to working with you for the development of your child. Thank you for your attention. Yours sincerely, Mrs. Angela Fock and Mdm. Ho Mun Yee Team Leaders of Primary 1
