Message of gratitude

Dear Friends,

From advancements in technology to life-changing healthcare, your support has set forth a ripple effect of hope and healing that has touched countless lives in ways we may never fully understand.

With gratitude,

Will Whitworth

Our Children’s Miracle Network Champion

A lover of life who is joyful, determined, and creative embraces his role as our Champion.

Growing up, Will was meeting all his milestones. Moving to Panama City Beach from New Orleans in 2018, Will had just turned three and his parents noticed his language was very hard to understand. Will communicated all the words appropriate for his age, but they could not be understood by others.

A teacher encouraged Amanda to have her son evaluated for speech therapy. Their local pediatrician gave them a referral to an Ascension Sacred Heart Pediatric Rehabilitation facility where Will was evaluated for speech and occupational therapy.

Four years later with physical, speech, and occupational therapies, Will has accomplished mighty things. He currently goes to speech and occupational therapy twice a week to address fine motor delays such as handwriting and drawing. Amanda says she now cannot keep Will away from a pen and paper!

Amanda and Will appreciate that such effort is made to create such a personalized approach to therapy. Will loves goats, so his therapist makes sure to find worksheets that include pictures of goats. His physical therapist often challenges Will to lightsaber battles, one of his favorite games. This creates a deep connection with the therapists which, in turn, helps Will reach his goals.

Although overwhelming at times, Amanda recalls how amazing it has been to watch Will grow, excel, and overcome obstacles daily. Being the mother of a CMN Champion is helping fulfill Amanda’s greatest desire and duty to be an advocate for other children and families. Together, she and Will are making a huge impact in this season of life.

ECMO

Donor-funded technology brings an added lifeline to our community
A highly advanced specialty service which provides life-saving support with a critical heart or lung condition.

ECMO stands for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. It works like a heart-lung bypass machine in infants, children, and adults. ECMO helps stabilize a patient’s lungs and/or heart while an underlying disease or issue is managed. The ECMO system uses a pump to remove blood from the patient, adds oxygen and removes carbon dioxide, and then re-circulates the oxygen-rich blood back into the patient. As a result of this process, the body’s heart and lungs are allowed to rest, thus buying needed time for the patient’s condition to improve.

For the first time, this treatment is now available to infants and children in our community. Previously, families had to travel hours with an extremely ill child to a location where pediatric ECMO was available. Now, patients of all ages in our region have access to this life-saving treatment as soon as it is needed. And families will not have to be displaced from their loved ones and community support system.

ECMO is a sophisticated life-support technology that requires significant skill and resources. The ECMO team is an expansive, specially trained team of ECMO Specialists (licensed respiratory

therapists and registered nurses), perfusionists, pharmacists, laboratory and blood bank technicians, dieticians, physical therapists, and a team of nurses and physicians.

Dr. Carrie Garrison, M.D., serves as the pediatric medical director of the new service line. Her interest in ECMO dates to her residency training and she has been determined to bring this service to Ascension Sacred Heart. “Its complex physiology and how it supports the sickest of the sick patients has always been an area I feel passionate about,” says Dr. Garrison. Knowing that ECMO will offer a chance for survival to the tiniest of her patients, and having it readily available, provides her comfort and ease of mind. She believes the new service brings an even higher level of care to our community, and addresses a real need.”

Access to this life-saving technology would not be possible without philanthropic support. “Because of our donors’ support, we are able to provide this added lifeline to our community, keeping our patients and families close to home,” says Dr. Garrison. “We are so grateful.”

Neonatal Transport Units

Studer Family Children’s Hospital offers the region’s only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where there is hope for the tiniest and most fragile babies, those born much too early or with a critical illness. Getting these little ones to the specialized care in the NICU and getting them there quickly is critical.

Thanks to donor support, two new Neonatal Transport Units, offering the safest and most advanced technology, will be available to bring the infants to the NICU where miracles happen. These 100% donor-funded, state-of-the-art Transport Units will be staffed with a highly skilled registered nurse, a respiratory therapist and an EMT/paramedic driver. In addition, each will have a specialized, miniature-size incubator, capable of sustaining the smallest newborn.

Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation is grateful for the charitable generosity of the community, the donors, partners, and advocates who made the acquisition of these transports possible. Their giving will help bring premature and critically ill infants born throughout Northwest Florida to the life-saving care of the NICU.

Kugelman Family Foundation

Bringing game-changing care for our children along the Gulf Coast

In 2019, nine-year-old Brody Ryan was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. He had just started third grade when he began experiencing recurring fevers that intensified, sometimes lasting for days.

His mother, Sarah Ryan, intuited that something was really wrong. During a second visit to their pediatrician, she mentioned that her research revealed the possibility of Crohn’s. When blood work indicated additional testing was necessary, the doctor contacted the Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Ascension Sacred Heart, requesting that Brody be admitted as soon as possible. Sarah was amazed and gratified that her son became a patient without delay of any sort.

There he underwent a colonoscopy – a procedure with an uncomfortable prep, followed by the test itself that requires sedation and involves a low level of radiation. A few weeks later, he underwent an MRI. The tests revealed that Brody did, indeed, have Crohn’s disease, a rare, autoimmune condition that causes chronic inflammation of the intestines. Brody told his mom that he did not want to have to go through a colonoscopy again, though a surveillance test might have to be repeated in three years.

8 | Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation

Today, at the age of eleven, Brody is relieved that he will not have to endure another such test. The generosity of the Kugelman Foundation has made possible the purchase of a portable Pediatric Contrast Enhanced Ultrasound (PCEU) for the Children’s Hospital. Its diagnostic technology eliminates the need for procedures involving uncomfortable prep, radiation exposure, sedation, and a hospital stay. A revolutionary technique, PCEU brings a new level of care to the region’s children, who previously had to travel out of the area to access it.

As a member of the Kugelman Foundation, Sarah says, “We are so grateful that we have the opportunity to bring this technology here and are able to. We’re just excited to see how much it will help, and hopefully get the word out so families can come and benefit from it.”

Currently, Brody continues to receive intravenous medication at the Pediatric Infusion Center. Both he and Sarah speak highly of Nursing Supervisor, Janice, who they met on their first visit there. “She made us relaxed and comfortable, explaining everything so well and how it would feel. She was amazing – like a schoolteacher and the best pediatric nurse combined.”

Sarah wants other families whose children are diagnosed with Crohn's disease or other

autoimmune diseases to know, “It doesn’t have to define the child or the family. Living with it will make them stronger and everything gets easier over time.”

Brody remains under the care of Pediatric Gastroenterologist, Dr. Alan Sacks, at Studer Family Children’s Hospital. “I don’t think people realize how fortunate we are to have the Studer Family Children’s Hospital,” Sarah says. “It’s such a wonderful asset, and we have got to help make it better known.”

Sarah encourages people to support the needs of this amazing hospital, which is solely dedicated to caring for kids. She is helping raise additional funds to purchase a second PCEU, knowing how much of a game-changer it will be for our children.

The generosity of the Kugelman Foundation has made possible the purchase of a portable Pediatric Contrast Enhanced Ultrasound (PCEU) for the Children’s Hospital.

4th Annual Cat Country Cares for Kids Radiothon

There is a reason CAT Country Radio 98.7 is first in the minds and hearts of its listeners: Its dedication to the community and its needs. The phenomenal success of this multiaward-winning station means whatever CAT Country supports, so will those devoted to its broadcasters, its service, and its caring.

Consequently, when the first Annual Cat Country Cares for Kids Radiothon was launched as a fundraiser for the Bear Family Foundation Pediatric Oncology Center for Hope, Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Ascension Sacred Heart, people rallied around the cause with generous donations. Since then, Radiothon’s popularity has grown tremendously.

The 13-hour event was held live in the Center Court of Cordova Mall, hosted by popular radio personalities Brent Lane and Mel McCrae, WEAR ABC 3 News Pensacola anchor Sue Straughn, along with NewsRadio 92.3 and

ESPN Pensacola. Listeners were inspired to give as they heard stories from patients, families, physicians, and leaders about the compassionate, life-saving impact of Studer Family Children’s Hospital.

As a result, over $142,000 was donated by the community, an amazing testimony to the generous hearts of the Pensacola area. The funds raised completed the campaign to purchase a new Neonatal Transport Vehicle for the Children’s Hospital, which will convey the regions’ tiniest and most critical infants to its Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

This custom-built vehicle will be staffed by a specialized pediatric team capable of operating the unique, miniature-sized incubator so strategic to a baby’s survival. It will impact the lives of thousands of children and families throughout the region and as far away as Louisiana down to Gainesville.

The Emerald Ball

The black-tie Emerald Ball was held at the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort and Spa on Saturday, February 4, 2023. Patrons were enthusiastically welcomed to the dance floor by Mr. Big and the Rhythm Sisters, were able to select from a curated wall of spirits and wine, and buy a chance at a $5,000 shopping spree, generously donated by McCaskill and Company. Together donors and supporters celebrated the awardwinning healthcare that anchors our community. Presented by Howard Group, Grand Boulevard Sandestin Town Center, and Silver Sands Premium Outlets, an impressive $174,000 was raised, designated for the most advanced technology available in imaging diagnostics. This technology is part of a continuing effort by Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast to provide care that is consistent with its designation as one of the top 100 hospitals in the nation.

Charity Golf Classic

Burnt Pine Golf Club hosted the 20th annual Charity Golf Classic on Friday, September 23rd, 2022.

120 individuals gathered for a gorgeous day of relaxation and comradeship, all while knowing their generous donations were directly enhancing the installation of the most advanced CT scanner available.

Presented by the generosity of Silver Sands Premium Outlets, Grand Boulevard, and the Howard Group, players and sponsors enjoyed breakfast, lunch, and on-course food and beverages. The Backsliders offered live music on the veranda as neighbors and friends arrived for the Bubbly Walkabout with fashions being modeled by Todays Boutique. A live auction followed that included fabulous trips to the Four Seasons Private Resort in Scottsdale and a chance for four to travel and play in the Play Yellow Invitational at PGA Spa and Resort.

Nearly $220,000 was raised by this tremendous group of supporters and donors. This esteemed event was led by tournament chairman Bill Tate, supported by committee members Joe Capers, Marie McKenna, Jon Vice, Karen Wade-Allen, and Ronnie Stanley.

Since 2002, this tournament has raised more than $3 million for various expansion efforts at ASHEC including:

• Olson Women’s Diagnostic Center

• Family Birth Place

• Judy and Steve Turner Heart and Vascular Center

• Cancer Center

• Emergency Department

• Comprehensive Spine Program

Cordova Mall Ball

For more than a quarter century, the community has gathered in support of babies and children who need care at Studer Family Children’s Hospital.

This year, the 27th Annual Cordova Mall Ball, presented by Sandy Sansing Dealerships, raised over $398,000 to benefit children and families in our community.

Over 1,500 guests enjoyed an evening of fun including three live bands with the addition of a second-line band and colorful performance artists that illuminated the event included fire dancers, stilt walkers, and aerial performers. Over 20 area restaurants provided food to attendees and a New Orleans-style French Market offered Hurricanes, face painting, a

fortune teller, a caricature artist, and more! Last but not least, a silent auction full of curated items was offered.

Every year, Cordova Mall closes early to allow over 150 volunteers to set up for the event, an expression of mall officials’ and shop owners’ dedication to the health of our community’s children. During the past 28 years, the Cordova Mall Ball has raised more than $6.5 million on behalf of sick and injured children and babies at Studer Family Children’s Hospital.

Groundbreaking CT Scanner Arrives on the Emerald Coast

The upgrade was made possible by the Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation through generous donations by community members. “This new CT scanner is faster and more precise, which only enhances treatment for those we serve,” said Bryan Walrath, President of Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast. “We are very excited to bring this new imaging technology to our community.”

“Not even a year in and this scanner has so many success stories and has truly saved lives,” states Dr. Lauren Stipp, a cardiologist specialist at Ascension Medical Group Sacred Heart Cardiology 30A in Watersound. “From screening with coronary CT calcium scores that indicates a more thorough workup and finding blocked arteries, to Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement candidates having their procedures completely planned ahead of time locally, this advanced imaging allows doctors to identify heart disease early when it is most treatable. We have patients in their 30s with CT scans finding coronary artery disease with early treatment being started,” she states, “ultimately saving lives.”

Dr. Philip Tatum, Neonatologist at Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast Family Birth Place, is ecstatic when he describes an opportunity

to use the CT scanner just last month. “In coordination with Pediatric Pulmonology, it enabled us to establish a diagnosis of Persistent Tachypnea of Infancy in a baby, which is an unusual diagnosis. Without availability of the CT scanner here, this patient would have had to be transferred for further evaluation. The family was very thankful that we were able to provide that level of neonatal care here locally,” he states.

The CT scanner can be used with virtually any body part or patient type:

• Bone, muscle, tendon, ligament and soft tissue/musculoskeletal imaging

• Head and neck imaging

• Lung scans and low-dose cancer screenings

• Pediatric imaging

• Pelvic imaging

• Advanced heart imaging

“With the generous support of our community and event supporters, we are able to provide new equipment and technology to our community,” said Adrienne Maygarden, President of the Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation. “The new CT-imaging system will touch thousands of lives in so many ways in the coming years, and we are so grateful to all who have joined us in support.”

Tammy and I – our whole life is about giving back, but you have to pick organizations that you think are going to make a difference.
- Jim Pierce
14 | Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation

Jim and Tammy Pierce Investing in the Health of the Community

Jim Pierce has succeeded in carving out a life of career success and financial bounty, despite having endured extreme hardship and abuse as a youngster.

Today, he and his wife, Tammy, are committed to make the world a better place through philanthropic support of organizations such as Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast (ASHEC).

Jim explains, “Tammy and I – our whole life is about giving back, but you have to pick organizations that you think are going to make a difference. Most communities have a hospital, but Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast is uniquely different.”

What sets ASHEC apart from others is not only its mission to deliver healing and services to all persons, but the doctors and nurses as well, who are the lifeblood of this healthcare ministry. Jim has seen firsthand that their work, their dedication to the patients they serve, is delivered with genuine, compassionate care.

“God has given me a lot of great things,” Jim says, “but my heart is not one of them.” In recent years, he has undergone more than twenty heart interventions at Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast. His cardiologist, Dr. Charles Mayes, Jr., board-certified in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology, ensures that the physician on call is fully apprised of his patient’s situation. Jim continues, “I have so much confidence in Dr. Mayes and his whole staff. He is amazing.”

Tammy, too, experienced the difference that ASHEC brings to the community when she was critically ill and hospitalized with COVID. Jim praises the care she received, saying, “Her physician, Dr. David Phillips, and the nursing staff were outstanding. They went

beyond the call of duty and I give them credit for saving her.”

At the time, a friend encouraged Jim to have Tammy transferred to a non-local, larger facility. He believed, however, that the personalized service, respect and passionate commitment to healing she was receiving at ASHEC were essential for her recovery.

He is grateful to reside in an area served by Ascension Sacred Heart because first-class healthcare is a priority for him and “his golfing buddies.” And he is thankful he can contribute financially because ASHEC is strategic for the entire community’s well-being.

Jim urges others to help meet the needs of the hospital through charitable donations to Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation. Its work helps provide for the healing needs of those without resources. Its fundraising efforts also help the ministry acquire the newest and safest healthcare technology, available to all.

Jim expresses his appreciation for those who contribute financially so that the lifesaving services - such as he and Tammy have experienced - will continue to be a part of the Emerald Coast’s future.

Ascension Sacred Heart Bay

The community was invited to an informative presentation, Discover Ascension Sacred Heart Bay, hosted by Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation, Ascension Sacred Heart Bay Advisory Board and hospital president, Robin Godwin. At the well-attended event, which took place April 20 at the Charles Hilton Center, the audience heard from hospital leaders and physicians about the unique services and capabilities now available at Bay.

The evening’s presentation outlined the hospital’s journey over the past few years, highlighting its mission to bring health, hope and healing to all. Several milestones of achievement were recognized: Level II Trauma Center designation, a comprehensive heart care program, advanced oncology screening and treatment, plus extensive surgical services. Updates and future plans for Ascension Sacred Heart Bay, distinguished as the county’s only non-profit hospital, were also discussed.

Lianna Sagins Service of heart benefits Ascension Sacred Heart Gulf Women’s Diagnostic Center

When Lianna Sagins and her husband moved to Port St. Joe eight years ago, she was eager to experience a sense of community, of belonging, and searched for where she might fit in. Then, after attending a meeting of the Junior Service League (JSL) of Port St. Joe, Lianna knew that she had found the niche she had been looking for.

JSL is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. The League got its start in the early 1990’s, begun by a small group of women who believed the community had needs that should be addressed, and that they themselves should have a source of help when it was needed.

Today the group strives to help those less fortunate, address special requests from families, and support local nonprofits. Their mission is centered on helping the women and children of the county. They offer not only their service, but also carry out community projects

to obtain funds for charitable organizations, clubs and other entities in need.

The League learned that the Women’s Diagnostic Center at Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital on the Gulf was expanding and seeking financial support to help women afford the healthcare services provided for them locally. Lianna states, “We felt it was a natural place for us to step in,” and it also gave them the direction they sought for future giving. Thus the League responded with two fundraising events that allowed them to present the Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation with the first installment of their support. “It is a perfect time for the Center’s expansion with all the growth in the area,” Lianna believes. “We need these types of women’s services here.”

Lianna’s passionate commitment to JSL has led to a second term of serving as its president. “I just can’t leave,” she explains.“ We do so much. The League is small but mighty.” She adds, “Serving the community has really made my life complete.”
