Don’t be afraid to start packing early! If you’re moving in the summer, there’s no reason that you can’t pack your winter clothes two months before moving day. Also, your fine china and other things you only use on special occasions can be packed in advance. Wrap all glassware, china, and breakables individually in towels or packing material. If you’re trying to save money, wrap each item in newspaper. Take inventory of your belongings before they’re packed, in the event that you may need to file an insurance claim later. If possible, take pictures or video tape your belongings. Record serial numbers and model numbers of electronic equipment. Don’t pack it if you don’t need it! Have a garage sale or better yet donate to a good cause. Any items you haven’t used in more than two years you probably won’t ever use it again. Give it to someone who needs it and who will get good use out of it. Don’t be afraid to invest in high quality packing boxes. You should use same size boxes for easy stacking, but not too big. Boxes should not weigh more than 25 - 30 lbs each, so no-one gets hurt lifting. Pack all boxes to capacity. Boxes that are

underfilled are more likely to be crushed and boxes that are overfilled can tear or fall apart. Seal boxes completely with packing tape to keep out dust. 6. Label all boxes as soon as you’re done packing them (e.g. “Bathroom”, “Bedroom”, “Kitchen”). When labeling, draw and arrow on the box to indicate which side is the top and write the room label on multiple sides. Be as specific a you can with labeling - this will save you a lot of time moving in and unpacking. 7. Do not apply tape directly to polished or painted wood finishes. Removing the tape could ruin the surface. 8. Check with your insurance agent to ensure you’ll be covered through your homeowner’s or renter’s policy during the move. 9. Make arrangements for transporting your pets. 10. Never pack explosives, combustibles (gas), food of any kind, liquids, or pets. These could cause damage and will void your insurance coverage during the move. 11. Be sure each member of the family packs a few nights worth of clothing, prescription drugs, a towel, a toothbrush, toiletries and other personal items. Remember it will take some time to unpack on the other end. Also be sure to pack a small tool kit for re-assembling items that couldn’t be moved whole. Your Local Moving Guide

Make and confirm travel reservations if you'll be traveling more than one day. Be sure a relative or close friend knows your travel route and your schedule so you may be reached if needed.
