Breakdown of Electric Utilities in Texas

Investor-Owned Utility (IOU)

• A private, shareholder owned company

• Rates are regulated by the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT)

• IOUs serve roughly 70% of the state’s electric customers

• IOUs within the ERCOT region are part of Texas’ deregulated market and must separate their generation, transmission and retail sales

board member.

Electric Cooperative (CO-OP)

• Co-ops are private, nonprofit utilities owned and controlled by its members

• Texas Co-ops set their own rates

• In Texas, Co-ops can choose to opt into the competitive retail market

• Texas has 74 electric Co-ops, serving nearly 3 million Texans (roughly 15% of the state’s electric customers)

Municipally-Owned Utility (MOU)

• A publicly owned, nonprofit utility that serves area residents

• MOUs may generate and/or purchase power to sell

• Rates are approved by the local government. Rates are not regulated by the PUCT

• In Texas, MOUs can choose to opt into the competitive retail market

• Texas has 73 MOUs serving more than 3 million Texans (roughly 15% of the state’s electric customers)

Pro bono logo creation for New Braunfels group of business owners organizing a nonprofit to help their community. Ticket and poster design were included in the project for their New Year’s Eve fundraising event. Their main supporter was a client, Taste of New Braunfels. I created digital versions of their print magazines and posted them to their website.
