Teco Glue Course Attended bv Debnse And Industrial Representatives

Washington-Eight representatives of industrial and governmental agencies have just completed an intensive five-day course in the use of wood adhesives for military products held at the research laboratory of the Tirnber Engineering Company.

In view of the gror,r'ing demand for laminated marine timbers and other glued wood items being called for-by the Defense Agencies, Carl A. Rishell, Director of Research, adapted the courses of instruction to fit these needs.

The testing of plywood and the many requirements and tests prescribed in military specifications covering glued products rvere included in the course.

The staff instructors gave special attention to the uses of glues for boat, ship and barge construction. The trainees also personally studied and tested other types of adhesives. This work included characteristics and uses of each type of glue, how they are handled, stored, mixed, spread, cured and how to detect and prevent faulty glue lines.

As a particular feature of the course, two laboratorymade testing machines were used for testing wood shear blocks and plywood. Each man was supplied blueprints of the machines for constructing units in their plants. Regular use of such testing equipment is saving many thousands of dollars annually in woodworking plants.

The effectiveness of the courses is due to a large extent to the small number of trainees permitted for enrollment at one time. Future courses are being planned. The number of enrolees will be restricted as usual so that each man will have personal supervision from the five instructors headed by N. V. Poletika, manag'er of the laboratorv.

Curtis Receives Safety Award

Curtis Companies Incorporated, Clinton, Iowa. manufacturers of Curtis Woodrvork, recently received for the second time an Award of Honor for distinguished service to safety. This u'as presented by the National Safety Council of Chicago.

The Curtis safety record is an outstanding one. Through Ju.ne 7, it covers 1027 working days and over 3,500,000 man hours rvithout a lost time accident. M. L. Gilbert, Commissioner of the Iorva Bureau of Labor, u,ho attendcd the meeting, stated that he knew of no other Iorva industrv. or any industry, that could equal the record.

When the award rvas presented, all Curtis Clinton employees assembled for the meeting in the Curtis Club llouse. Walter Nvquist, chairman of the Curtis Safety Committee, received it for the company and presented it to G. M. Curtis, company president.

Mr. Benson, of the National Safety Council stated that the achievement of the Curtis plant was one of the finest known to Americar-r industry, particularly so as it extendecl over a period of nearly three years.

I\Iansell, who is chairman of the board of Celotex Limited, British subsidiary of The Celotex Corporation, is going to London in connection with affairs of the British Company. He expects to return in about six weeks.

Snyman will remain in London for some time where he rvill be engaged in a position in the management of Celotex Limited.

Mcrsonite Begrins Shipments

Frorn Ukiah Plant

Shipment of Masonite hardboards to lumber and buildirrg supply dealers in Masonite Corporation's western sales division from the new plant at Ukiah, Calif., began July 12.

Affected by the change in shipment point are dealers in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico. Previously, the company's hardboards had been shipped from the.main plant at Laurel, Miss.

Appoints New Compcny Officers

The Board of directors of Pabco Products. Inc., San Francisco, at their regular meeting on June 22, approved two changes in the list of officers of the corporation, it was announced by C. C. Gibson, executive vice president.

Andrew S. Halley, rvho l.ras been treasurer of the company since July 1949, was appointed vice president and treasurerM. C. Headrick was appointed controller of the company. For a number of years Mr. Headrick has been in charge of factory accounting.
