The new "lifer" in the penitentiary had bcen in the lifetcrmert' wing but a few daye when one day at lunch one of the cons rosc to his feet, shouted "thirteen," and the whole gang in the mesg room laughcd loudly'

Thc very ncxt day another man rotc to his feet during lunch and shouted "twenty-six" and again there waa laughtcr and applause.

When the new man got back to his cell he asked his cell-mate about it. and wondered what it wae all about. The fcllow said: "Well, you know we are all herc for a long time and so we have heard all the jokcs any of us trnows, over and over again. So we decided to save time in our joke telling by numbcring all of our jokes, and wherr one of us gets a notion to tell a certain story he simply hollers the number of the joke, and everybody knows what joke he is telling. It saves time and effort and gets thc

Not a man in the room laughed or applauded, much to his surprise. So he waited a few minutes, then roEe to his feet and shouted "Eightcen." Again there wae no laughter from the convicts. who just kcpt on cating.

Of course, as soon as he got back to his cell, he asked his cell-mate about it. "I told what I thought were the two best stories in the whole list, and yet nobody laughed. How come?" And the fellow answered:

"Oh, you know how it is; some people can tell a story and some just naturally can't."
