Universal Buys Oregon Plant
Universal Forest Products has purchased Willamette Industries' Industrial Wood Products division, Woodburn, Or.
The sale includes buildings, equipment, inventory and 8- I /2 acres of land. Bobby Hill, vice president of manufacturing operations for Universal's Far West Co., Huntington Beach, Ca., will administer the property. Five division sales persons will remain under the new ownership.
The Oregon remanufacturing acquisition makes Universal "truly continental," says Universal c.e.o. William G. Currie. "We now operate from l7 states plus Canada, ranging from Massachusetts to Southern California and Florida to Oregon. The Woodburn plant will continue to serve its region through manufacture and distribution of all kinds of forest products."
Weyerhaeuser To Close Plant
Weyerhaeuser Co. will sell or close an I-beam plant in Albuquerque, N.M., as part of its refocusing effort.
If a buyer is not found, the plant will be closed about Dec. l, according to Michael Cohen.
The company will continue to supply engineered building components to residential and commercial construction markets and is developing alternative sources of supply.
West Feels Hunicane's Effects
The devastation of Hurricane Hugo has caused rising prices and strong demand for plywood reaching as far as the West.
"We're having to find new suppliers from across the country to meet the demand," says Stacy Hardee, Buck Building Supply, Charleston. S.C.
SCR, Inc., Lake Oswego, Or., recently sold two cars of fir plywood into Charleston. "lt's the first time in about l5 years we've shipped sheathing plywood in a CD grade into the Deep South," said Tom Crabtree.
The hurricane's Sept. 2l attack on the Carolinas caused up to $4 billion in insurance claims and downed about 6.7 billion board feet of timber, reported the Wall Street Journal.
