EmPloYees must also be informed of the HCS program's purpose, any operations in the work area where hazardous chemicals are present, and where the HCS written program and accumulated MSDS are located.

Earl Van Buskirk of PGL was elected chairman and will also serve on the LMA board of directors for three years. Don Koch of BMD was selected as a two year representative to the board. It has long been felt that LMA's associate members, vital to the survival of the association, as well as the retail dealer, should play a broader role in the affairs of the association. Some areas with which the council will be concerned will be convention/trade show activities, membership development (both regular and associate), political action and dealer/supplier communication.

This first meeting was an exciting and refreshing beginning. with the increased participation and assistance by members of the Associates Council and all LMA associate members, Lumber Merchants Association of Northern California can expect to increase its value and service to the lumber and building material industry as a whole. The council's next meeting will be at the 1988 LMA Convention, May l5-17, at the Nugget, SParks, Nv.

Formaldehyde: building materials containing formaldehyde are cur' rently being analyzed under a separate OSHA standard and, for now, is not exempt from the HCS.

Wood Dust: like formaldehyde, it is currently being examined separatedly, and it is covered under the HCS.

The OSHA HCS will essentially preempt all state hazardous communication standards which do not meet the minimum federal requirements. State regulations which exceed the federal standard remain in effect. Thus, lumber and building material retailers should be aware of state laws which might require additional hazardous communication standard compliance.
