Lobby Group Elects Offlcers

' New officers have been elected by the Western Building Material Dealers Assn., an amalgam of 15 different associations with an interest in the building materials field.

Paul Butler, Hubbard & Johnson, Red' wood City, is the new president; Bob Reed, Barr Lumber, Los Alamitos, Ist. vp'; Richard Cross, Cross Lumber, Merced, 2nd. vp.; and Kenneth McGilvray, managing director. The meeting was held in Sacramento.

Western Building Material Dealers Association was formed in 1961 to inform members of developments in the mechanics lien law, to interpret and disseminate information regarding other laws on the building material field within the state, or national legislation afiecting building material.

Members have been involved in legislation on the lien law, oothe 20 day notice" as a part of the lien law, and tax reduction measures such as the recent I57o change to 3O/o adjustment on inventory evaluation for tax purposes.

Housing starts rose 9.8/o in September from August's level, the first monthly increase since February.

On a seasonally adjusted annual rate, the single family starts figure hit 1,518,000 units, according to the Commerce Dept. The increase was the first since the downturn started seven months ago.

Despite the figures, Michael Sumichrast. economist for the National Association of Home Builders, stuck to his prediction that starts would drop to an annual rate of I million by the end of the year. He and the Census Bureau disagree about the adjustment of the figures. Starts increased in the West and South, decreased in the Northeast and North Central region.

Industry members recently have united in forming the Plywood, Hardboard and Particleboard Traffic Conference. [t was created as a result of mutual industry problems afiecting the shipment of these commodities; such as: unrealistic packaging requirements, unjustified freight increases, inconsistent commodity descriptions, etc.

At conference meetings, mutual transportation problems are discussed and. where necessary, plans are made for concerted industry effort to correct the situation.

Plyvt/ood Fulures Corching On

Plywood futures trading, launched on the New York Mercantile Exchange in early September, is ofi to a strong start, averaging over I00 contracts a day traded in the first month.

The basic unit of trade is a carload of 70,000 sq. ft. of r/r" plywood. Exchange officials are quick to note, however, that the purpose of futures trading is primarily for protection o{ values and not as a merchandising vehicle.

Currently there is trading in all the months of 1970, giving industry members a chance to buy or sell as much as fourteen months ahead.
