Politicos Hit Lumber Stqndqrds
The Secretary of Commerce has been asked to reject the proposed new lumber standards by two House sub-committee chairmen, Reps. John D. Dingell (D.-Mich.) and Benjamin S. Roeen. thal, (D.-N.Y.) and by Paul Rand Dixon, chairman of the Federal Trade Commission.
Dixon said the proposed standards would result in the consumer "paying a premium for lumber of inferior quality.', Dixon has also termed tlle proposal "a great disservice" to the public. Dixon says his views reflect the entire FTC.
The congressmen charged that o'a group of lumber manufacturers" were using the Commerce Department to ttimpose upo.n the consumer an apparently deceptive scheme for the manufacturing and marketing of lumber.'
Most factions in the lumber industry, after years of fighting, now support the proposed new standard. As currently proposed, 1l/r't dry lumber could be used as nominal 2i4s.

Solid wood fencing with a deft touch o{ architectural design and a built-in factor of fire protection has been used to surround parking and recreational areas at two large Menlo Park, Calif., apartment complexes.
Building officials required that fences attached to parking structures be of non-combustible materials. They approved, as fully meeting this requirement, use of otNon-Com" exterior-grade fireprotected wood, a development of the forest products div. of Koppers Co., Inc.
Wood pressure-impregnated with fire-retardant chemicals has been widely used for many years, but it is only recently that a leach-resistant treatment has been developed which allows its use outdoors.

AII.INDUSTRY ,TAARKETING CONFERENCE
(Continucd, lrom Poge 12)
(l) Great need for dealers to assist customers on how-to; so many customers today tlat have no knowledge of how to use a hammer or paint brush.
(2) Dealers have just as much opportunity to make substantial ROI as the mass merchandiserhe must, however, use compensatory pricing.
(3) Markets such as plasterboard, flooring, roofing have been lost to dealers because of inattention. Perhaps one dealer, at least, in an area should carry stock.
(4) Most dealers too busy to keep up with changethey determine nrizimum number oI employees required and then lay off one.
(5) Dealers can't support all wholesalersmust select some but not all and then cooperate for best results.
At the close of the panel presentations, some brisk questions and answers developed the following:
(1) Joint sales meeting with another yard produced good results.
Small dealers must have employee training films.
In answei to the complaint that manufacturer's people no longer call on tJre dealer, it was felt that the high cost of keeping men on the road would preclude the availability of many field
(4) Regarding cooperative advertising on a local basis, it was felt that matching funds may provide best solution. (Clip sheets preferred to mats)
(5) In cooperating on advertising, dealer requires more time to prepare for tiein.

Those dealers with men out calling on contractors feel that this practice is good advertisitrgand profitable. Mixed opinion on the value of incentives; some feel the practice produces more sales while others find it difrcult to apply fairly.
It was felt by most that the dealer could compete with mass merchandisers by studying the market for their niche; strengthen home improvement efiort and ties with do-ityourselfers. It rvas suggested that manufacturers. wholesalers and deal' ers should join in a team efiort to tell the public what service was avail' able with the full service dealer.
In closing the conferencg panel moderator Richard Bullock had this to say:,
(f ) The second fastest growing element in the housing business is the dealer building material retailer sales are ap 57'/o in the past. 5 years.
(2) The ietailer has the flexibility to meet changing conditions.
(3) The wholesaler and dealer should use what the manufacturer has or can supply in sales aids.
(a) The retailer must find new ways of training people. Bullock was most enthusiastic about WBMA's demonstration of their new video tape equipment and plans for training.
(5) This conference is one of the finest things that ever happened. It is most important thatwe get together. WBMA's Conference is ahead of the industry. If held on a college campus, we would call this an "inter-face.t'
