J.M. Thomas Buys ldaho Site
J.M. Thomas Forest Products, Ogden, Ut., has acquired the former Croman Corp. sawmill site in Boise, Id.
The wholesale distributor has relocated its two-year-old Boise division to two warehouses and an office building on the l4-acre site.
Staffed with seven employees, J.M. Thomas' Boise division had been based on the site of LouisianaPacific's composite decking plant in Meridian, Id., and its departure gives L-P room to increase composite decking production.
Croman halted production at the mill two years ago, and will dismantle it to allow J.M. Thomas to renovate and add on to the buildines over the next two years.
Woodlake Lumberyard Opens
In a town that lost its only lumberyard seven months ago, High Sierra Lumber and Supply, Inc., Woodlake, Ca., is now open offering a complete line of lumber, building and hardware supplies. The 12,000 sq. ft. facility on 2-ll3 acres, held a grand opening Aug.30.
Formed by local investors, High Sierra will be run by Jeff Holmes and Jerry Kramlich, who have more than 40 years experience in the industry.
Holmes most recently managed the Keith Brown store in Dinuba, Ca., after overseeing Woodlake's defunct Keith Brown unit acquired from Copeland Lumber. Kramlich managed Keith Brown stores in Lindsay and Exeter, Ca. Many former Keith Brown employees followed the managers to their new company, including office manager Ronda Vannorsdall.
New Council Backs CCA
The three major manufacturers of CCA have formed a new organization to continue supporting and participating in the sound scientific analysis of treated wood.
Founded on the belief that CCA treated wood is safe when used as recommended, the Mount Vernon, Va.based Wood Preservative Science Council will consult with the nation's leading experts in the fields of environmental science, epidemiology, risk assessment, and toxicology and issue scientific reports, which are available at www.woodpreservativescience.org.
Jim Hale is executive director.

Depot Landscape Unit Grows
Home Depot's new division of Landscape Supply stores seems to be paying off, since sales at Home Depot Landscape Supply stores are outpacing those at the company's traditional big orange boxes.
Although no specific figures were available, c.f.o. Carol Tome said sales at the nine Home Depot Landscape Supply stores have been "considerably higher than at Home Depot stores" on a per-sq. ft. basis.
Last year the company opened its first Landscape Supply store, which usually consists of five to seven acres of plants, including a temperature-controlled greenhouse, a 25,000-sq. ft. shaded area, and one to three acres of shrubs and trees.
ACC Approval Process Slows
Arch Wood Protection may not be able to offer wood treaters more pricecomparable preservative ACC before the December 30 deadline to cease treating with CCA.
Since competitor Osmose has long been registered with the EPA for an ACC chemical, Arch had filed a "tagalong" or "me too" application in hopes of facilitating approval of its proposed Wolmanac ACC. Yet Osmose does not have the modern, in-depth testing needed to satisfy the requirements of the EPA and chose to voluntarily withdraw its ACC registration.
According to director of commercial development John Horton, Osmose expected the requested testing would require several years and several millions of dollars. As "responsible product stewards," Osmose also wanted to avoid reviving the media and environmentalist scrutiny that befell CCA.
Several treaters had hoped to replace CCA with ACC, eliminating the time and expense of converting cylinders to more expensive copperbased preservatives.
EPA is in the process of evaluating several companies' requests for ACC, but Arch warns treaters not to delay conversion plans since EPA's decision likely will be protracted.
Hands-On Program For Kids
To strengthen its ties with the community, dealer Hills Flat Lumber Co., Colfax, Ca., had volunteer employees help children create more than 1,000 bird houses at recent home shows.
Employees arrived at the Auburn Home & Garden Show and Nevada County Fair with precut wood, hammers and nails, handing them out free to children to teach them hands-on carpentry skills.
"It's something fun for the kids," said Greg Holt, Hills Flat Lumber's marketing mgr., who believes carpentry can begin at a young age.
Due to its success, the company is considering expanding the youth bird house program through the holiday season, which may include a Santa's workshop.
Study Will Halt Logging
A state environmental study and management plan for the Jackson State Demonstration Forest, Ukiah, Ca., has been ruled inadequate, bringing to a halt any logging authorized by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection after Nov. 6,2002.
A Mendocino County Superior Court judge ruled the state Forestry Department didn't describe the forest's physical environment adequately, or determine the total environmental impact of the state's management plan, which was approved last year.

Certified Omissions
I would like to address the August 2003 issue of The Merchant that included the Certified Forest Products Buyers Guide. There is one more certification system that was not addressed and is being accepted by the big boxes. This is BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs) forest certification.
U.S. Indian Tribes that have timber holdings and actively harvest their timber have always had extensive, environmentally friendly forest management practices. These practices actually exceed most worldwide standards. Tribal forest management practices not only take into consideration the impacts to the environment, but also take into consideration the impacts to the individual tribes' religious, cultural and social beliefs.
Many tribes are now having the BIA become their third party certification agency due to Tribal Sovereignty issues. It is my knowledge that there are currently a few tribally owned sawmills that are using BIA certification that is accepted by the big boxes, including Yakama Forest Products, Colville Indian Precision Pine, and Fort Apache Timber Co. Other tribes such as the Warm Springs are currently working with the BIA to receive their certification letter.
I'm sure if you contact any one of these mills and ask them for a copy of their certification letter, they will be more than happy to mail or fax it to you. If you would like to see a copy of Yakama Forest Products' BIA certification letter, you can visit our Web site at www.yakama-forest.com.

Take Two
I have subscribed to The Merchant Magazine for years. One of my companies, SunRidge Lumber Co., has advertised in the publication. Yet every time you print the Certified Forest Products list you fail to mention either Columbia Vista Corp. or SunRidge Lumber Co.

However, both companies are and have been ISO 14001 certified and both are members of the EPA's Performance Track Program. As of February of 2003 only 302 sites in the U.S. had this designation. We are the only primary wood processing plants to earn this environmental award.
