Payless Cashways and DIYonline.com have agreed jointly to offer an e-commerce Web site for the pro market.

DIYonline.com enables users to design their own projects step-by-step, from compiling a list of materials needed to ordering the products directly from Payless Cashways for home delivery.

The site is being tested in several Payless Cashways markets, before a chainwide roll-out.

Vinyl and aluminum siding are the preferred building materials for exterior walls of new houses, according to a survey by the National Association of Home Builders.

At a 40Vo share, vinyl/aluminum nearly doubled brick, its closest challenger, at 2l%o. Stucco finished third with 18Vo, while wood (14Vo), and other materials (7Vo) brought up the rear.

In 1990, the last time the survey was conducted, wood reigned supreme with 397o, followed by other materials at 207o. Brick and Stucco finished tied for third at l8Vo, f ollowed by vinyl/aluminum at 5Vo.

Keith Brown Buying Last Copeland Yards

After an 18-month sell off, Copeland Lumber Yards agreed to sell its last 15 operational yards to 1O-unit Keith Brown Building Materials, Salem, Or.

Of Copeland's remaining yards, 10 are in Central California's San Joaquin Valley, three in Southern Oregon and two in Washington.

The deal, set to close Sept. l, will instantly turn Keith Brown into a regional force, with 25 pro yards, mostly in rural markets. A week

Dealer Adds Green Trusses

Hayward Lumber Co., Pacific Grove. Ca.. has introduced 1007o certified-wood trusses which, according to president and ceo William E. Hayward is a "landmark event in the construction industry and a monumental occasion for the company."

The five-yard firm reportedly maintains the largest stock of Forest Stewardship Council certified lumber in the state of California.

Michelle Randall. division manager, said the first use of the trusses was by builder Skilful Means, which is before the latest agreement, Keith Brown completed acquisition of six ofits current 10 yards from Copeland-five in the Portland area and one in coastal Oregon City. constructing the Wolken Sustainability Education Center in Los Gatos, Ca.

Liquidating the once-68-unit Copeland Lumber will allow longtime owners Bill and Helen Jo Whitsell to retire.

The chain is still marketing about 2l pieces of real estate, mostly the sites of now-shuttered lumber yards.

Skilful's owner, John Swearingen, called the product "a perfect fit" for the project. He plans to install a "truth window" in the Center which will explain how the trusses help ease the environmental impact of the building.

Depot Opens 1,000th Store

Home Depot marked the opening of its 1,000th store in Chicago Ridge, Il., by wrapping a2,200 sq. ft. orange ribbon around the columns of the New York Stock Exchange building.

President and ceo Arthur Blank, chairman Bernie Marcus and several associates rang the opening bell on Wall Street and then assembled three Universal Forest Products gazebos that the firm donated to Manhattan's Department of Parks and Recreation.

"We've doubled Home Depot from 500 to 1,000 stores just in the past 3l12 years," Blank said. "We're on track to double again in the next 3-Il2 years."

Plans call for the company to open about 200 stores this year, or, roughly one every 43 hours. In fact, three other stores debuted simultaneously with the Illinois unit: Harriman, N.Y., Passaic, N.J.. and Mansfield. Oh.
