Liberty Gift Hauled Cross Country

A huge abstract sculpture, Prairie Ship Liberfy, completed a three-month journey from Portland, Or. , to New York for the unveiling of the newly restored Statue of Liberty.

The 100-ft. high, 200-ft. wide environmental sculpture of brightly colored nylon sails suspended from eight masts by artist Naj Wikoff was the only land-based vessel to take part in the tallships regatta.

A merchandising kit to help retailers promote sales of real wood interior paneling is now available from the Western Wood Products Association.

Items the retailer can use to build interest in real wood paneling as well as to help homeowners and do-it-yourselfers carry their paneling projects to completion, ad slicks, clip art for preparing newspaper ads and direct mail, and radio announcements are included in the comprehensive kit.

Three plan sheets provide do-it-yourself information in addition to a 2}-page book with easy-to-follow instructions and illustrations covering installation of paneling, styles of wood paneling, finishing work, and moulding and trim. A l6-page book covers the basic elements of design (color, texture and pattern) and provides information on finishes, including sealers, primers, pains and glazes, as well as transparent finishes such as lacqueq varnish, wax and oil. Another booklet shows outlines of the various paneling patterns available with actual dimensions.

Palco To Double Redwood Cut

Maxxam Group Inc.'s newly acquired Pacific Lumber Co. will double its redwood harvest in northern California to ease the debt burden of the $870 million takeover by Maxxam Group Inc. last February.

Palco announced it has reorganized to shoulder $550 million of the debt, transferring its cutting and welding products business to other Maxxam subsidiaries and planning to sell is 100,000 sq. ft. San Francisco, Ca., headquarters building, 4000 acres of timberland in San Mateo County and 3,400 acres ofagricultural land in the Sacramento Valley.

The company ovns about 189,000 acres mas, Mexico, near the U.S. border and a sawmill in Culiacan. The firm does finger jointing and remanufacturing, makes moulding and operates a dry kiln at their Casas Grandes, Mexico, plant. The firm is 25 years old. of timber in Humboldt County, approximately three-quarters of which is redwood. It ranks fourth in U.S. redwood lumber production, but is the largest producer ofold growth redwood.

The former sales manager of MCG, Rosie Lopez, hasjoined the sales staffat Berser & Co.'s El Paso ofhce.

Environmentalists contend the increase will accelerate the destruction of some of the last great redwood forests, which Facif,rc Lumber had previously logged on a "continuous yield" basis, harvesting only as much timber as the forest grcnvs in a specified time period.

Maxxam, a New York investment partnership led by Charles Hurwitz of Houston. Tx.. declined to comment on environmentalists' criticisms that the timberlands would soon be exhausted.

LASC Exec Receives Top Honor

Wayne Gardner. executive vice president of the Lumber Association of Southern California, has received the Vic Hartley Association Executive of the Year award from the Southern California Society of Association Executives.

Gardner has headed the 300 member LASC for 23 years. In addition he serves as a retail member of the American Lumber Standards Committee and is on the board ofdirectors ofboth the National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association and the Western Building Material Dealers Association.

He is a past president ofthe Southern California Society of Asociations and the Western Building Material Dealers Association. A graduate of UC Berkeley, Gardner has a degree in forestry and has done graduate work at USC and Southwestern School of Law.

This is the tenth year for the award which is given annually to an individual who the selection committee feels has done the most within the industry or profession they represent as well as contributing to the development of the profession of association management. Gardner received the award at the annual installation meeting, June 19, in Long Beach, Ca.
