A Gathering Of Eagle

Eagle Hardware & Garden's feisty chainnan David Heerensperger took slight jabs at the competition in answering point€d questions ftom shareholders at the company's annual meeting.

He said Eagle may pick up some HomeBase stores if that competitor falters and dismissed a comparison of rival Home Depot's stores with Eagle's, saying it was like "comparing a Chevy Gtore) with a Irxus store."

He has his eye on stores HomeBase could possibly close including Denver and Portland. But since they are smaller than Eagle stores, "you're kind of buying a headache" when it comes to remodeling them, Heerensperger said.

President Richard Takata admitted he was surprised by news of Ernst Home Center's public stock offering, until he looked at Ernst's balance sheet. "They need the money," he said. "It's obvious they had to do something."

Officials also revealed Eagle is spending about $25,000 a month in legal fees to fight a lawsuit regarding its inventory miscormt in1992.

Eagle boasted record sales and profit last year, $10.8 million in ernings on $322.9 million in sales, while expanding from seven to 13 stores.

The fast growth continued during a record frst quarter, with sales of $1(X million (a 947o increase over last year's first quarter) and the addition of three strores.

The chain opened iB seventeenth June 16 in Everett, Wa., and plans to add five morc stores this year and at least seven next year in markets including Denver, Co., Vancouver, Issaquah, Lynnwood and possibly Tacoma Wa.

They are cunently looking at a site for the critical North Seattle area between Northgate and Aurora Village, but would not elabrat€-
