'YIONTH'S PRICES (Continueil lrom Poge 12)
peaks in demend are developing, and only absolute essentials should be bought, deferring large-scale ordering until demand slackens off and mill prices decline.
One charter subscriber, a western wholesaler, went out and bought 150 cars of lumber'bhead of a $10 ris€ in prices. The difierence of $4OO to $500 p€r car mea.nt a gain of $60,000 to $?5,000. The service ip used by millq wholesalerso retailerso major builders, industrial users and financial analysts throughout th6 United States and Canada.
Futures Markets And Hedging
The development of futures markets for lumber and plywood opened a new opportunity for the publication to help protect its readers against harmful price moveso such as led to huge inventory writeoffs in 1969. Each issue now contains a section entided "Thoughts for Hedgers.'o
Contrary to the standard textbook approach, Young believes those in the trade should hedge in the futures markets only when prospective price moves are against their interests, and lift their hedges when pnrspective price movements are in their favor. Among other things, this approach can greatly reduce margin calls. Those who have already tried using the futures markets will know what this means. Those who haven't yet become involved with futures might well look into it, because at this stage of the market wild price swings are a real possibility, and those in the trade will need all the price protection they can get.
