Futures Markets And Hedging

The development of futures markets for lumber and plywood opened a new opportunity for the publication to help protect its readers against harmful price moveso such as led to huge inventory writeoffs in 1969. Each issue now contains a section entided "Thoughts for Hedgers.'o

Contrary to the standard textbook approach, Young believes those in the trade should hedge in the futures markets only when prospective price moves are against their interests, and lift their hedges when pnrspective price movements are in their favor.
