U.S. Lumber Volume

U.S. lumber consumption roared to an all-time high in 2002, fueled by strong activity in the repair/remodeling and new home construction sector, according to the Western Wood Products Association.

Estimates show U.S. lumber consumprion toraled 56.3 billion bd. ft. in 2002, surpassing the previous record of 54.3 billion bd. fr. set in 1999.

Consumption in repair/remodeling jumped ll.9Vo in 2002 to 18.1 billion bd. ft., while demand for lumber in residential construction rose 4.97o to 22.3 billion bd. ft., reported WWPA.

Final 2002 lumber consumption and production statistics will be released in the fall followins WWPA's survey oF Western mills.

Tracking with the record consumption, lumber imports entering the country also reached a new high, rising to 2l billion bd. fr. in 2002. Canadian imports rose 2.17o to 19.1 billion bd. ft., while non-Canadian imports spiked 37 .5Va to 1.9 billion bd. ft.

Output at Western mills increased 5.5Va to an estimated 17.4 billion bd. ft. Mills in the Oregon and Washington coastal region increased production l}Vo to 9.6 billion bd. ft. and accounted for most of the gain in the West.

Looking ahead to 2003, lumber demand will likely fall 1.87o to 55.2 billion bd. ft. Even with the anticipated decline, 2003 would be the second highest lumber consumption year on record.

Roseburg Trims Workforce

Roseburg Forest Products, Roseburg, Or., has cut l27o of its work force and scaled back plywood production by 2OVo.

Most of the 450 job losses last month occurred at the company's Dillard, Or., plywood plant.

Company officials blamed the cuts on a weak economy and stiff competition from OSB.

President Allyn Ford said sales of high-end hardwood plywood have been "very slow."

Despite the recent moves, Roseburg officials expect to see a slight increase in sales from last year.

Roseburg has made gains with lumber and EWP, and plans to increase capacity at its Dillard srud mill by 707o bv vear's end.
