Weyco C.E.O. Maps The Way

Weyerhaeuser Co.'s c.e.o. Steve Rogel told shareholders recently that the company's immediate focus will be on paying down debt.

"Lean, nimble, quick, opportunistic. That's what we are trying to do," Rogel told shareholders at the firm's annual meeting in Federal Way, Wa.

This year the company has had to grapple with low lumber prices and shrinking profits.

In 2002 the company's profits plunged to $241 million, from a high of $840 million in 2000

Rogel said the company was still facing internal challenges from the Willamette Industries acquisition.

Weyerhaeuser is not going to be a comfortable fit for everyone," Rogel said. "As I've told our employees: You're going to find our workplace of the orientated."

As far as future acquisitions, Rogel noted that the company didn't have the cash now for bold moves. "We wouldn't preclude ourselves from a minor acquisition," he said, "but any- thing major will have to wait."

In the future Rogel said the company would likely expand its international operations, particularly in China.

In the short term, however, Rogel said, "We're going to continue our focus on capturing synergies from the Willamette integration, paying down our debt and reshaping the company."

Rogel predicted that Weyerhaeuser will be out of debt in 30 to 60 months.

Dealer Embraces Technology

She did her first test run in March, and starting with the April statements began rolling out the new statements to her customers. Buchkowski stated, "E-Statements is going to save us hours and hours of statement preparation time. No more printing and stuffing, and no more postage. Not only are we thrilled with that, but the early feedback from our customers is very positive."

At this same time Buchkowski is also implementing CcrTnreo's new iNet e-Invoices technology. "EInvoices will allow our point-of-sale system to automatically email a copy of each invoice to our customer. Our customer's bookkeeper will automatically get a copy of the invoice within seconds after we complete a transaction," she said with a smile. "Our customers can hardly wait. This is a tremendous service we are providing, and it actually saves time on our end."

Paul's Ace Hardware is one of about 50 businesses agreeing to implement CcrTntao's e-Statements and eInvoices programs this spring.

Buchkowski's had the opportunity to get direct feedback about her online services from her most important customers at a recent contractor breakfast. "To be honest," she admitted, "I was pretty surprised at the feedback. Contractors were coming up to me. shaking my hand and telling me our online services were the best thing we had ever offered them. Their bookkeepers liked the account access, while their buyers liked the fact that we let them search our products and prices on our Web site."
