New Planer For Weyco Mill

Weyerhaeuser Co. is installing a new multi-million dollar planer at its Longview, Wa., finishing mill.

Although officials won't reveal the cost of the new planer, they say it will finish boards 50Vo faster than the old system.

"For years the planing and finishing process ended with a manual grading line," said Weyerhaeuser's Del Berg. "Grading the lumber involved lumber graders turning boards by hand to visually judge the grade."

"The new system will allow better, more accurate grading because computers will help the graders judge quality and strength," Berg added.

It is expected that when installed, the planer will help supply customers at the company's Snoqualmie, Wa., mill.

More Cal Logging Proposed

The Bush Administration has released a new plan that would nearly quadruple the amount of logging in California's Siena Nevada mountains.

Recommendations by the U.S. Forest Service conclude that the Clinton-era Sierra Nevada Framework was too restrictive to properly address wildfire concerns.

The details of the federal plan include:

. log 450 million bd. ft. annually in the first l0 years, log 32,500 acres of old growth, only extracting trees less than 30" in diameter, and

. allow 60Vo of forest canopies to be removed and for canopies in spotted owl habitat to be hand thinned.

The plan did omit an earlier provision that sought to log one to two acre plots in the forests.

The recommendation will now be sent to Pacific Southwest regional forester Jack Blackwell for review.

Expo Suit Over Racial Slurs

A customer at an Expo Design Center in Monrovia, Ca., has filed a defamation suit against the Home Depot-owned company.

Arthur D. Thomas says that an Expo Design clerk added racial slurs to a typed, four-page ceiling fan installation contract last summer.

"It was very disrespectful of them to treat me this way," said Thomas, who is of African and Japanese heritage. "And it bothers me that I couldn't get an apology."
