"Not knowing how the final product would turn out caused a great deal of skepticism and concern with everyone involved," said Western Lumber's Bob Crews. "The original product was 2-llZ"x 5ll2" RlL 12' to 2O' and after having water flowing through it for 74 years and moss growing on the outside for part of that period created an interesting texture to say the least. The wood has held the width, and the thickness is a full 2" for the most part. This pipeline was built with totally clear lumber, and to no surprise to us, there have been no knots found. The only significant defect is the amount of grain separation that we see."

Most amazing was the age of the wood, which was cut from 1924 to 1926. "After using a magnifying glass to count the growth rings and discovering 154 rings per 5l/Z"s, we knew we had very old wood," Crews said. "Given the fact that in this time period we were falling redwood trees that were 12 to l6-ft. diameter, we have wood that was most likely a seedling tree 2,000 to 2,500 years ago. This is the oldest of the old growth wood that we are totally recycling through the system. It will be very rare to obtain wood in this quantity with such a unique history."

Westem Lumber expects to market the wood for paneling, siding and other applications in the higher end and exotic housins market.
