Senate Upholds Salvage Bill
Despite intense lobbying by the Clinton Administration, the Senate voted 54-42 against a repeal of the timber salvage amendment.
Clinton signed the bill into law as part of an emergency spending bill last summer. but on recent election campaign stops has been pleading to restore fish and wildlife protections.
Sen. Mark Hatfield (R-Or.) said, "This is not a forestry or environmental problem. This is a political problem put into environmental wraps for the sake of the political election cycle."
The new amendment from Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wa.) would have reinstated most environmental protec- tions temporarily suspended last year in an effort to salvage dead and dying wood from fire-prone forests. The special rules last through the end of the year and could be extended.
Murray's amendment also would have halted the logging of thousands of Pacific Northwest acres the Forest Service already sold to contractors.
