New Oregon Lumber Mall
Developers are turning a 300-acre former sawmill site along the Deschutes River just south of downtown Bend, Or., into a mill-themed shopping and entertainment area.
The Old Mill District at River Bend was once home to one of the largest and most technologically advanced pine sawmills in the world. Opened by the Brooks-Scanlon Timber Co. in the early 1920s, the mill complex went through a series of owners before finally being shut down by Crown Pacific in January 1994 due to a shortage of timber.
"The design of the new structures will be closely patterned after the typical Pacfic Northwest sawmill buildings that stood on the site and neighboring ones from the early 1900s through the mid-1990s," said spokesman H. Bruce Miller.
Designs will incorporate bow truss, clerestory and cupola rooflines and traditional materials such as brick and wood clapboard and metal or composition roofs.
The existing brick power house with its three smokestacks, a Bend landmark for more than 70 years. will be retained and possibly restored.
Construction on Phase I is planned to begin this summer and open early next summer, featuring a central Riverfront Plaza where visitors can stroll, relax at sidewalk cafes and enjoy views of the river and Cascades mountain peaks.
Other features include an amphitheater and three landscaped ponds, including a recreation of the former Log Pond.
