Snavely/Weyerhaeuser Glulam Push

Snavely Forest Products, a leading western distributor of wood building components for the past l4 years, is now featuring Weyerhaeuser glulam beams at its distribution center in Ontario, Ca.

The firm distributes glulams and other wood components through lumber yards and building materials dealers from Santa Barbara to San Diego. They offer Weyerhaeuser stock glu- fams in lengths up to 72'. Widths range from 3-l/8" to8-3/4" in depths up to 25".

Special services are supplied to over 200 building materials dealers in its market area including cutting beams to desired lengths and providing customized shop drawings. They assist dealers in providing technical information to contractors, engineers, architects and builders.

The glulams are used by contractors throughout Southern California for headers, ridge beams, rafters, floor girders and other applications in residential and commercial construction.

According to Steve Cotaya, Ontario sales manager, there are many reasons that demand for Weyerhaeuser glulam beams is increasing: glulams provide the assurance of an engineered building component and are more consistent in availability and stable performance, compared to solid sawn beams, he said. Glulams provide greater strength for long spans with less depth than solid sawn. For example, Cotaya estimates that it would take an 8" x 24" by 22' select structural solid sawn header to replace a 63/4" x 18" x 22' glulam beam.

Outside Cal ifornia (805) 833-0429 style homes, he adds, with exposed cathedral ceilings has created new demand for glulams because of their attractive appearance. Many are rough-sawn for special rustic appeal.

Weyerhaeuser glulams provide stability because they are laminated with kiln dried machine stress rated (MSR) lumber, in contrast to green solid sawn timbers which can cause callbacks if they twist or warp after they are in place, Cotaya said. Glulams offer architects, engineers and contractors peace of mind because they provide the consistent load carrying capacities of an engineered component, rather than being concerned about what grade of solid sawn lumber beams are used on the job, (iotaya said.

Cotaya predicts increased growth in demand for Weyerhaeuser glulams because of the versatility of their new l650Fb header which will replace many solid sawn beam applications. Cotaya estimates that 75%r of all homes being built in this market today utilize some kind o[engineered wood building component.

Wood Window Demand Rising

Almost 700/o of windows used in single family construction and 550/o of those in multifamily construction are wood or wood-clad windows.

According to specifiers surveyed by the National Wood Window and Door Association, the increased popularity of wood windows is due to problems they have with all-metal or all-vinyl windows including rust and corrosion, damage from extreme cold, lower manufacturer standards and lower buyer acceptance.

The study also shows that exterior use of wood doors has risen by 9o/0.

A 3olo increase in the use of metal executives, is interviewing vendors, pulling together a budget and considering sites in preparation for opening the first 60,000 sq. ft. units in July, according to Lee. Sites will be selected in mid-population areas of 150,000 to 175,000 people.
